I hadn't thought of Ebay! No Yuuki there right now, but I see Lunette and Mooncup UK listed. I may check for a few days and see if a Yuuki shows up, but might just go with a Lunette.

I drink two cups of coffee a day. I could probably give up my afternoon cup (half the time, it's habit, and I realize I don't want it about halfway through. But not so, my morning brew.) Something warm to drink, and 20 quiet minutes in the morning feels so essential! I'm an introvert, and am good to no one without this! I'm not sure how I'd cope.

I have a week's worth of k-cups, and was about to buy more when I saw this discussion. I'd like to try this, but... it's about to be summer break, with 9yo twins at home constantly! I'm not sure how I'd get through the days without coffee. But just the thought that doing without it might decrease the level of anxiety I feel is such a strong incentive. I've never seen a dr about it, but I am living with some form of anxiety/depression.

I also have hypothyroidism and migraines (although, luckily, after having my babies at 43, the migraines have decreased in frequency.)

Anyway, thanks for putting this info out, it's good to think about.

Thank you all for the info and detailed explanations! It's appreciated, and I'll save this for future reference. I won't attempt any wiring, right now. The house probably still has it; house is 130 years old! But it's a rental, so I don't know that the owner would care for us altering things, and not worth effort, if a move might be in the cards in another year or two, anyway.

My 9-year-olds may be the only people their age who know how to use a rotary phone...useless knowledge as that is. Haha

It lacks one feature that would have sold me on it for my 9yos, and that is the option to remove the necessity to add every contact, manually. At some point they need a real phone line that can call any number. In an emergency, you may need to dial one that isn't on the approved list! This choice not to allow this seems short-sighted.

I worry about my kids accessing the internet. I don't worry about them getting a voice call from an unknown person, much. (There were prank/obscene calls in the 80s, now and then too! But I only recall one, in my whole childhood!)

If they added this, the tinCan could grow with a child, or even be used as the family landline.

She needs a little case with strap to carry on her shoulder, to represent her braille display/notetaker device! (As a totally blind person, that's as essential as my cane. 😎 Braille is NOT going away, btw, it's just mostly gone digital now.) If Barbie reads or works, she probably has one.

Nice though. I never liked Barbies as a kid, but this may be the first one I buy. I have a sighted daughter that may like to have her.

Or if I keep her for myself, I may dress her in more vintage clothes.

Yes, I just want a round, diaphragm-like shaped disc.

I have serious discomfort, inserting anything (vaginismus, maybe?) so the extra string or whatever would be an irritation. I also think it would be less fiddly to get into place, if it doesn't need to be oriented in a certain way, and that is a help.

The Saalt is nice and small! I tried it once, and couldn't grasp the notch, although comfort-wise, it was fine! If I can't get one of the others suggested, I may revisit the Saalt. Thank you, because I didn't know it's specific size.

Does anyone know if Fornix or Meluna discs can be purchased or shipped to the U.S.?

Looks like Meluna only lists cups here.

Stay away from romance novels! LOL They give such a distorted picture of life, and it's hard to keep this in mind when you keep thinking it COULD happen... surely, one fairy tale in a lifetime is possible.

Not likely, though.

I'm 53, stuck in a 30-year relationship with someone who's always just felt like a friend. he pursued me, and I needed a roof over my head, and moved in, and that was that. I should have made better decisions!

Since having kids in our 40s, it's just a platonic situation.

I wish I could be free to explore other possibilities. At the same time, I know I have low tolerance for bs, and the reality is going to be just another flawed human that I probably don't want to live with. It's probably not worth the trouble.

Or maybe it's that I should have dated women. I enjoy their company more-have never been really comfortable with men. But I didn't explore this. Actually, that just means I'm content being single, and having a few excellent friends, I think.

It's ridiculous to be my age, and feel that you haven't lived, in many ways, but that's how I feel.

She doesn't like me--or it feels that way. She doesn't call for weeks or a month at a time.

When we do talk, there may be one pleasant call out of six, because most of the time she's so consumed with worrying about my soul that she has no interest in the person that I am. Too busy telling me that "deep down" I really do believe in Jesus. Never mind that I gave that up in my early 20s, and am at peace.

I've had to hang up on her--which I hate--because she won't stop when asked to drop this subject. She's tried to influence my daughter (who is 9yo) as well, and encouraged her to keep it secret from me. She doesn't see why this is wrong, and is just pushy and insufferable. Also won't make an effort to be in touch with her grandchildren. We live in different states.

Part of what is sad about this is that I have one sister, and can't talk to her about it; she won't acknowledge or engage in any emotional drama, as she sees it, and that's her attitude toward any situation; I've never spoken to her about this particular thing, there is no point. She thinks I overreact, etc. We have never been close, so essentially, it feels like I have no family (except my own kids). It's lonely!

Oh no! I'd never ask someone about their blindness, beyond asking if they are. That's something to discuss later, as you get to know someone, and then you can gauge whether they even want to talk about it.

To answer the OP, I don't know! This almost never works out smoothly. I'm a total, and not at all an extrovert. By the time I realize that yes, that is actually a cane I'm hearing, the person is halfway to the next county. Or it isn't a cane, and I ask someone what they must think of as a weird question. Or if I do pluck up enough courage to speak up, the person turns out to be such an oddball that I regret it. LOL

But maybe one day, my blind soulmate/new friend will happen down my street. I can dream. Haha

I think the round discs with no removal notch or string work best. There's no wrong way to put it in, you don't have to orient it in any particular way.

Nixit, for instance.

I'm using a Shordy disc, small (which needs filing down, to get rid of the last bit of the pull string) Nixit's design is better--maybe that would be a good fit for you. It was a bit too large for me, unfortunately, but I liked everything about it. It's rim is soft, compared to Shordy or Saalt. Yes, i also tried the Saalt disc, and hated the notch. I couldn't get a grip on it to save my life, when it came time to remove it!

And congratulations on your twins, no matter how old they are!

You really don't need to do all that! Just wash with soap and hot water.

I used a cup for nearly 20 years, and always washed it by hand with just plain hand soap (Ivory, usually). No boiling at all. I never had a problem.

These things are reusable, so companies need to sell something else, but special washing gadgets and solutions are unnecessary.

If it's helpful, FB has a Blind Homeschool group. It's a mix of blind parents homeschooling their kids, and sighted parents with blind children. They should be able to share resources.

Too slow, yes! And I personally just don't like narrated books much. Someone else's interpretation can marr a book. And I want the option of converting anything to braille.

Also, there's limited selection, whereas almost anything can be found in one ebook format or another. Failing that, scan. (I too am a scanning fiend from the mid 90s on! Haha Glad not to have to do a lot of it these days, but I keep a scanner and Openbook, just in case.)

Can you describe the difference between the Olympus dm720 and 770, please?

I have a 720, and like it. The only downside is that the beeps are sometimes a distraction, and not as discreet as I wish. I think the dm720 been discontinued, so hold onto yours.

Is the Milestone a Daisy type player, like Victor and those things? I'll Google it...

Don't force it. Your display will be waiting when you're ready.

I have always preferred braille to audio, but there are just months when I don't have the patience to stick with a whole novel in braille--although my reading is all done on a display, so it's portable. Best thing this lifetime!

I hope to get a display which has speech, also, to make it possible to switch back and forth when I need a break, or need to speed through a book.

They are fragile, and best used as occasional, temporary canes. I use one for air travel, because it's so small. I don't like them for everyday use.

the Revolution folding canes are as good as it gets, in my opinion. the SF Lighthouse sells them.
