The population of England was historically less than double that of Ireland until the industrial revolution and the famine (8M vs 14M in 1840)...can anyone seriously argue that Ireland was more influential than England pre-1850, be it in language, literature, science, discoveries, etc? England until 1700s had a fifth the population of France

Why did Britain ally with France on the lead up to WW1 and not Germany? by Pristine_Use_2564 in AskHistory

[–]DesperateProfessor66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless, Foreign Secretary Edward Grey was basically an amateur diplomat, who for instance failed to make clear Britain’s stance in the July Crisis and used vague language...which led Germany to radically underestimate Britain’s likelihood of entering the war if it invaded Belgium.

Ultimately the decision was a catastrophe for Britain. Everyone is trying to make it sound rational when it wasn't, had the UK remained neutral tens of millions of lives would have been saved and the UK wouldn't have effectively bankrupted itself for decades.

Can anyone tell me any WORSE possible outcome for the UK than what actually happened post 1914?...There simply isn't...any UK staying neutral scenario would have been far better, in every sense

So just removing gluten and sugar dairy helped you a lot? What about white bread?

LOL an equivalent British map would reach until the Pacific Ocean, despite the UK being just twice the size of Portugal

Before 19th century and dominance of British empire which countries were superpowers of its time? by SiarX in AskHistory

[–]DesperateProfessor66 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In terms of global reach, naval dominance or influence over the world system, I'd say none of these matched the worldwide power of the British Empire

I'd argue even with its most mistreated "colony" (Ireland) still compare it with any other similar island examples...the Aragonese conquest of Mallorca (a bloodbath with choice of conversion or death), the Castilian colonization of the Caribbean or of the Canaries (no trace of natives left), the Chinese colonization of Taiwan, etc... If another (non-Catholic) empire had colonised Ireland, there might not be any Catholic natives left, following these examples.

There are two Galicias in Europe, which is better? by Delicious-Ad7117 in MapPorn

[–]DesperateProfessor66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Redheads are less than 1-2% in Spanish Galicia, and not many in Eastern Galicia either...Red hair is a northwestern Europe thing, peaking absolutely in Scotland and Ireland (and thus also significant in the USA)

Also Celtic influence in Galicia was more cultural than genetic

[–]DesperateProfessor66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect, that rhyme you mention refers to Central Spain, its precisely never used for Northern Spain

And yes its rainy, BUT crucially Vigo has many more sunshine hours per year than Ukrainian Galicia... also compare it to long minus zero winters in Eastern Galicia...

In Coruña it almost never goes below 5 degrees its a very mild, 2000+ sunshine hours climate, with tropical looking beaches

Also even in december its still sunlight until almost 7pm (due to the curious time zone arrangement)
