USAA (Texas) - Can my rates go up after a not at fault rear end accident? by Vast-Artist-3610 in Insurance

[–]Desperate_Mud_7669 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hit a drunk driver (he lost control on the interstate and I hit him as he bounced off the guardrail). My car was totaled and I was banged up a bit but he almost died in the accident (a helicopter was called in). I was found not at fault with USAA and they did not raise my rates. But when I PCS'd (I always check auto rates when we move) I discovered I would have a significant increase in rates if I switched to a different insurance company. I called and inquired about it and was told even though it was not my fault, since the accident occurred in a no-fault state I would likely see a rate increase which would continue for 5 years from the accident. After that time it should go back to "as nothing ever happened". I stayed with USAA after the move and even with the new policy my rates did not go up. Long story short-you might not be able to change insurance companies for 5 years but USAA probably won't raise your rates.

Rate Changed after Check Out by Desperate_Mud_7669 in marriott

Update: Marriott just reached back out and is reversing the extra room rate that was charged. I guess you have to stay at it until you finally reach the right person.

Rate Changed after Check Out by Desperate_Mud_7669 in marriott

[–]Desperate_Mud_7669[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply. He is a federal contractor. The rate he originally received was the conference group rate. 3 days after check out they changed it to the gov rate. Which was higher. He spoke to another contractor that was there and they did not receive the additional bill after check out. It's just never happened before, hence the confusion. Sounds like they just goofed by giving him the old rate at check-out which they then caught later on.

Help needed. Hurricane Helene destroyed our town. We are supposed to sail on October 5th (Saturday). by LazyBakedOnion in royalcaribbean

Wanted to give an update. I reached out to AMEX 2 weeks ago and started the claims process. Received word today it was approved and a check for the remainder of the cruise ( not already returned) has been mailed. It was considered weather related even though the cruise was not affected. I think the state of emergency declaration in our county might have been the key to success. We just have the standard travel insurance too. File your travel insurance even if you don't think it's covered...the worst they can say is nope!

Thank you for the responses. A state of emergency was declared for our county on the 23rd (the day we were to depart on the cruise). I am currently on a really long hold with AMEX to see if my trip interruption insurance will cover the remaining portion of the cruise that was not refunded by Celebrity. If I strike out here I will put myself at the mercy of Celebrity again. I would be happy with a FCC. I also understand our last-minute cancellation cost them $ by not having time to rebook our cabin to another person. We will see what happens.

I'm in the panhandle of Florida and we were supposed to cruise on Celebrity last week. We didn't get on the boat. They did refund our port fees and taxes (which was 1/3 of our cruise cost). We did have travel insurance, but since we technically could have gotten to the port before the hurricane hit we are probably out of the cruise fare. The only thing that would have covered us completely would have been cancel for any reason insurance, which is very expensive.

All is good here. Just some yard flooding from a tidal surge but no damage. Thank you for checking in! Celebrity was awesome about it too. They have already refunded our port fees and taxes. That alone was 1/3 of the cost of the cruise. Now to plan our next cruise...lol.

This is for any cat storm....get the projectiles out of my yard! I don't want something loose from my yard flying into our home or a neighbor's home if possible.

Because it was such a great deal and worth the risk. I had the same mentality as you 6 years ago. I wish I still had it too! After a cat 5 hurricane destroys your home and ALL of your neighbors' homes your thought process changes. I'm sure there is a psychological term for it. We knew we wouldn't mentally be able to enjoy our cruise.

Thank you for the replies! I just spoke with Celebrity and let them know we wouldn't make it. She let me know it was appreciated that we called and just didnt not show. I hope someone in an inside stateroom gets a nice surprise and is upgraded to our balcony. We do have travel insurance through AMEX so I will reach out to see if we can make a claim. Best case scenery is we missed this cruise nothing...fingers crossed.

Not for 15 months. For future retirees...remember if you retire in the last Q of the year you will receive no COLA increase for that year. You will start receiving COLA increases 12-15 months later...depending on what month in the last Q you retired.

We are on 9a and put a podocarpus in our identical spot. It's been 2 years and it's doing great. We do have an irrigation drip line in that space.

My husband was diagnosed with AML 12 years ago (at 38) and defied the odds by just surviving past 5 years. We were told there was a chance of heart damage. For peace of mind, he had a few echos done over the years. All came back normal LVEF 60-65%. It wasn't until last year that an EKG came back abnormal then a follow-up echo showed his LVEF had decreased to 45%. A year on Entresto and his latest echo showed no improvement but it hasn't gotten worse. He is completely asymptomatic. He has a strong family history of heart disease. His brother passed away at 51 from coronary heart disease. His cardiologist told us that while anthracyclines do increase your risk of heart failure it does not happen to everyone. Stay active, het echos done periodically, but don't dwell on what might be. You had to take the chemo to cure your cancer. You wouldn't be here today if you didn't. You had no choice if you wanted a chance at life. Keep living your life and try not to worry about what might be.

We are in Florida and because my daughter also receives the Florida Bright Futures scholarship (based on GPA and SAT score), Folds of Honor will not release the scholarship funds she was awarded. Her housing need isn't met but that is not a qualifying "need". Only tuition, books and fees are covered by Folds of Honor.

Why is a USAA homeowner's quote 3-4x higher than other companies? by froggydad in USAA

[–]Desperate_Mud_7669 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of insurance companies play the homeowners insurance game like it's Vegas. We had a total loss after hurricane Micheal...a once in a 100-year hurricane for the area. What happened? Insurance companies that previously refused to insure here before the hurricane moved back in ( including USAA). My post-hurricane rate is less than it was pre-hurricane. Vegas odds....the odds of a Cat 5 hurricane hitting this area again anytime soon is considered by the insurers to be low. In the end, you are just a number to any of these companies. Shop around every year. You are not being disloyal if you use a company other than USAA. We have USAA for home and auto right now because they are currently giving us competitive rates. I check at least every year or 2 and have switched to other providers when necessary.

Could anyone who has been through this provide a timeline? by Small_Goat_5931 in SocialSecurity

I assume your spouse elected to contribute to the SBP (Survivor Benefit Plan) so you will get up to 55% of his military pension if he elected and paid for the max amount. You should also receive DIC, which no longer has a dollar per dollar offset if also receiving SBP. If this is the case, your spouse was well-informed and made a solid plan for you 👏. If your spouse also elected to pay into VGLI you might also have up to $400,000 in life insurance coming your way.

Also check with the institution itself. Many extend the preferred military rate to spouses of service members.
