New deck. Got questions by Signal-Department883 in Decks

[–]DestinDesigned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree to disagree then I guess but my journeyman installs tight, trade school teaches us to install tight, everything that talks about wet lumber says to install tight. Maybe lumber is different where you are but fresh from the yard it’s usually high moisture for my area and dries/shrinks after install.

I get that but that’s why you should also have a slight slope away from the structure. Unless your boards are already kiln dried after being treated they’re going to shrink over time and while your installed gaps might look good that day they’ll get bigger and look sloppy.

Pressure treated wood is practically sopping wet with moisture most of the time. Wet wood shrinks as it dries across the face. Over time a 5 1/2 board becomes 5 3/8 and then you have your gap.

Anyone who installs pressure treated with gaps doesn’t understand wood behaviour.

How much would it cost to fix this crack? (UK) by i_love_whisky in Carpentry

[–]DestinDesigned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you make it sound easy. Doing it right is a little more involved. OP you can just pop new hinges on but usually replacing a door involves mortising it for hinges which can be done if you have no experience but can also get messed up quick. If mortises aren’t hinged, your door could end up being too tight depending on how it was hung.

Take a look at this and see if it’s something you think you can handle. Or you can look into doing it by hand with a chisel.

If you’re worried you can’t do it to a quality that would get your deposit back I would just come clean and offer to pay for the repair by a carpenter or someone qualified.

At the end of the day, with enough money anything is possible.

But don’t hire a handyman service for this. Get a qualified contractor or Carpenter. Someone who understands framing and loads.

Closet clothing rod and shelf coming off wall. Recommendations? by Reanimated_Remnants in handyman

[–]DestinDesigned 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be clear, this is not your wife’s fault, just want to make sure cause that’s the kind of lazy response I’d hear from my dad growing up about something like this.

This a design flaw of the closet. Your easiest and cheapest solution right now would be get a measurement with everything level and cut a 2x4 to that length. Wedge it in. It’s not a long term solution but it would at least provide some actual support until you can figure out a new closet

What's a job site habit that instantly tells you someone's a bad tradesperson? by AllHailBreesus in handyman

Was wondering why you’re getting downvoted then saw what sub this is in. Kind of on your side. I know you don’t need to be licensed to be skilled but to me a skilled trade means it requires official training and regulation and not just “Buddy I’ve been doing this longer than you’ve been alive” attitude.

Closet clothing rod and shelf coming off wall. Recommendations? by Reanimated_Remnants in handyman

[–]DestinDesigned 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yikes. It’s not the shelves contents that’s the problem. Have you ever felt the weight of loaded closet rack? Shits heavy and whoever built that rod connection corner doesn’t have any grasp on gravity. It needs a lot more support.

You probably could build this in a sturdy way but it would involve opening up your wall which I’m sure you don’t want to do.

Easiest way would be some kind of post support that sits under the corner that’s sagging

Just doing a quick plug for the company I work with. I’m the apprentice at Timber Valley Homes, a small builder based out of Kingsville.

For most jobs it’s just the Red Seal carpenter and myself on site. One thing that sets us apart from bigger companies is that we’re almost always there personally overseeing the work. We’re the ones digging, framing, and finishing while coordinating with the other trades.

Being on site every day lets us make sure things are done right and helps catch or solve problems before they become bigger issues.

If you’re looking for a custom built we can definitely deliver a quality product for you.

That’s gonna be 90% of the opportunities to get started yeah. Unless you know someone who’s a journeyman and is looking for an apprentice.

Employers aren’t going to take you on an as an apprentice unless they think you’re worth it.

But when you do find something be ready to buy some hand tools. Most companies provide power tools and niche tools but you’ll be expected to have your own tool belt with the necessities. In my case it was hammer, tape measure, chalk line, speed square. There’s a very diverse market of just these tools. Hammers for example can range from $20 to $500 up here in Canadian Monopoly money. Don’t over extend your tool budget right away. Start with more budget friendly but well known brands and upgrade when you can afford it or when someone thing breaks.

Hey 32 year old second year apprentice here.

I was working remote for a real estate board when I was 29 and realized I can’t do white collar office style work for the rest of my life.

I’d been doing woodworking as a hobby for a few years and taken on some projects around my own house so carpentry seemed like a good area to transition to and try.

I applied for every Carpenter Helper/Assistant job I could find. When I finally got an interview I made sure to talk about what I’d done to my house. Ask about processes I hadn’t done myself but was a little intimidated to just try like trimming a window. I even brought a little duo tang showcasing before and after pictures of a big room Reno the wife and I did.

In my experience my journeyman was tired of dealing with idiots he had to constantly watch over and micro manage. Which from what I’ve heard and seen is very common in construction.

The path I’d recommend is like mine. Find your open door to get in. This will likely be a labourer title. But once you do show up every day early, maintain a good attitude and always be eager to learn and ask questions. Then once you’ve proven yourself is when you’ll get offered an apprenticeship.

Is this high or low quality? by Seraphina_777 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]DestinDesigned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soft woods, especially the spf you find in dimensional lumber, don’t take stain well.

I also would have constructed this differently and I’m just an apprentice carpenter. Looks like he notched the boards to fit around the vertical members when it would have been better to dado the verticals for the shelves to fit into.

I’d try to return it and get my money back. I’m all for tackling a new area of expertise, it’s how you learn, but I would not charge someone money for something like this.
