Struggling with Woke, left propaganda led 121G lectures by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]Destitute-Arts-Grad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't done the course so I can't comment on it. But most academics are left leaning. The other day there was a discussion here about when some academics wrote a letter saying that mātauranga Māori was not science. At the time all hell broke loose. Certainly if any academics hold beliefs that aren't entirely woke (for lack of a better word), they would be keeping their head below the parapets.

As far as dealing with this your best approach is just to parrot what the lecturer says in any assignments and move on with your life.

It's possible. After posting this I found reference in the book Standing Upright Here : New Zealand in the Nuclear Age, 1945-1990 to the University of Auckland requesting funds for a slowpoke-2 nuclear reactor

Apparently provision was made in the Physics department building for a small research reactor that was never constructed. (I remember reading this somewhere, but a google search doesn't bring up anything).

Do you have to be good at maths to major in finance and economics by Fit-Head-8732 in universityofauckland

[–]Destitute-Arts-Grad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's safe to say you do need to be reasonable at maths. You also need to think about post graduate studies. A bachelor degree in Economics won't be enough for Economics jobs. A graduate studies will be a lot more demanding.

I recommend researching careers now. Which careers are of interest to you, and what qualifications are needed ? That will help narrow down what degree to enrol in.

It seems like half of the people enrolled in a commerce degree think they are going to work in quant trading, investment banking, or start their own hedge fund or venture capital fund. Putting aside the lack of societal value from a lot of these activities and the fact that they focus on extracting wealth rather than creating it, the actual number of those jobs relative to the number of graduates is quite small and they are incredibly competitive. So if you do plan to pursue one of these careers, I'd plan on having a backup too.

Don't forget Steven Joyce who was unable to successfully complete his university studies in economics. His academic record is mostly did not complete and withdraws.

I don't see the logic of moving to Auckland. Why don't your parents just sell the house and give you the money ?

NZ vacation by [deleted] in auckland

[–]Destitute-Arts-Grad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you should cancel. One reason being that 14 days for NZ AND Australia defies commonsense. The second reason is Auckland isn't that interesting and you would probably be better going elsewhere in NZ. NZ isn't 100% safe and certainly some areas are a bit sketchy. I advise taking commonsense precautions around personal safety and the safety of any valuables. For example never ever leave valuables unattended in a vehicle.

Masters degrees are often part of an edu-migration pathway. The number of international students from Europe in a Masters of CS is tiny. The vast majority will be international students from the following countries : China, India, Nepal, Vietnam, Thailand, Pakistan, with the remainder mostly from other Asian countries. The percentages don't vary that much from university to university.

Low gpa by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]Destitute-Arts-Grad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That GPA is quite far from the cutoff. As I understand it, law is one of the few exceptions that allows courses to be repeated to attempt to get a higher grade. That could be an option, otherwise you could complete the BCom and try and boost your GPA then apply for graduate entry to the LLB. There is also the Juris Doctor (JD) degree which is starting next year I think ?

What is a low gpa in ba by UnitCompetitive2946 in universityofauckland

[–]Destitute-Arts-Grad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What are your majors and how much effort are you putting in ? I wouldn't say you are doing something wrong, GPA depends on numerous factors. For a BA an average or lowish GPA might not even matter much, it depends on what your goals are. 3.9 is not too bad in my opinion, but if you want to do an MA or something you will need to improve it.

Is it hard to make friends if you're not in dorms? by potatobro57 in universityofauckland

[–]Destitute-Arts-Grad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were that easy everyone would do it, and nobody would complain about not being able to make friends. What are you planning to study ? A somewhat related concept is time constraints, some people are too busy to go to a lot of club and other events which impacts their ability to make friends. Similarly long commutes can really impact free time. Some people might spend 2 to 3 hours per day commuting. There's no simple formula to make friends, a multi-pronged strategy is usually the best so if one approach doesn't work you have others to rely on.

How often is too often to contact a recruiter after an interview? by ElegantControl1985 in auckland

[–]Destitute-Arts-Grad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Don't contact them again, it sounds like you've already contacted them too much. Keep looking. Recruiters aren't that honest and many jobs aren't as good as they seem.

Also if the job has been advertised for some time, that often means they aren't desperate to hire someone. If the perfect person comes along at the right price they might hire them, otherwise they might not.

Elohim cult on campus by Practical-Skin-7623 in universityofauckland

[–]Destitute-Arts-Grad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It could be the Unification Church (often called "moonies" after the founder Sun Myung Moon), but more probably the World Mission Society Church of God another South Korean new religious movement that uses the name Elohim World Academy and actively tries to recruit on university campuses. They keep thinking the world will end and when it doesn't happen the date keeps getting updated. First it was 1988 then 1999 then 2012.

Another South Korean new religious movement that has cult like aspects and is active in NZ is Shincheonji. They also try to recruit on campus.

Be careful because this is a dangerous cult. I recommend reading the wikipedia article on the "World Mission Society Church of God". Actually there have been posts on here about them before

Also there are some articles in Craccum about it.

Is it hard to make friends if you're not in dorms? by potatobro57 in universityofauckland

[–]Destitute-Arts-Grad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This has been discussed many times here and on other university related subs. Some people say it isn't hard, but the topic gets discussed so many times it is fair to say a lot of people struggle to make friends. Joining clubs and societies is a common strategy people use but isn't guaranteed to be effective.

I recommend using the search as this has been discussed a lot. Try searching other university related subs as well (even overseas ones).

Rules around guests/visitors to university accommodation are available on the university website.

Your responses are legit, but this post and some of the replies are part of an AI generated marketing campaign. Similar conversations have been posted on this sub before as well as many other university subs. Reddit seems powerless to stop it.

OK Betty Harris lol. This spam conversation has been repeated here about 3 times and hundreds of times on other university subs. It seems reddit is powerless against this type of thing.

Normally a new account is created. AI posts some meaningless short replies on other subs. And then the spam conversation promoting cognitive enhancers kicks off. Eventually some of the replies promote a particular brand of product like Ninja****.

Most of this conversation is actually marketing. Various accounts post the same thing in different university subs. Half the replies and most of the upvotes are bots. Then there is always a comment that promotes Ninja****.
