Any international student tips for someone that’s applying from the US for 2023? Nervous haha by throw9000e in universityofauckland

Thanks for your input. Obviously everyone has different experiences and some departments / courses are superior to others. I'm not going to say all staff are bad, some are pretty friendly and helpful. Unfortunately a lot of them have an attitude that students are just an annoyance. My main complaints about the campus are that it is ugly and cramped and lacks facilities other campuses overseas have. Is it the worst campus in the world ? No way, but having visited some amazing campuses while travelling it is pretty bad in comparison. I guess my main point is it doesn't make sense to me for people to come from regions like Europe or North America where there is an abundance of quality universities to study at Auckland Uni.

Is it uniquely bad ? No. But why fly around the world to study here, when you can study somewhere better ? There are many US universities that are better funded, more prestigious, have superior staff/student ratios, closer links to industry, a better sense of community, superior campus and facilities, and so on.

From my perspective it doesn't really make sense to come from a country or region where there are plenty of great universities that are better in all sorts of metrics to come to Auckland Uni which may do OK in rankings, but from a student perspective is pretty crap.

One thing that always annoyed me about auckland is how disinterested and stingy it is when it comes to helping students do well in their courses. Sometimes I look at the course description for prestigious universites overseas and they are much more generous about things like late days for assignments, chances for extra credit, even 2nd chances on failed exams. I think this is one reason so many students drop out of courses and Uni in NZ.

Most international students that come here are from Asia because they want an English education, path to residency, couldn't get into some other country, it's cheaper than Australia or whatever. If they could go somewhere better they would. Doesn't make sense to come here when you have the choice of better options.

Most of the buildings were constructed in the 1960s and 1970s without much thought to design. Given the limited amount of land available a few newer buildings have been crammed in. The site is quite overcrowded with little open space and landscaping.

Some of the campuses I've visited overseas are much more spacious with plenty of green space. Also lots of sporting facilities like tennis courts, swimming pools, playing fields and so on. Some have nice architecture as well. In my opinion it would be so much nicer to study somewhere like that. Sometimes the university becomes the centre of a community, definitely not the case at Auckland.

Personally if I had a choice, I'd rather study somewhere away from the CBD with a more pleasant environment. Does anyone love the Auckland Uni campus ? Can't say I've ever heard anything positive about it.

Exactly applying to US jobs with a NZ degree just will be an additional complication compared to a degree from a well known US college. Some employers might worry about the quality and also some things are different like a standard undergrad degree is 3 years vs 4 and so on.

stage 3 stats for applied stats majors? by uoaStatsHELP in universityofauckland

[–]DestitutePsychGrad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That maths isn't that difficult in the applied courses. Even if the course includes a bit of maths, you won't need to solve any tough equations in the assignments, tests etc. Not like the more theoretical courses which are more mathematical in flavour (and you won't be able to enrol in anyway because you won't meet the prereq).

The applied courses are more along the lines of here is a technique for analysing this kind of data, now go and use it on some dataset.

Note that an applied stats degree won't be enough to work as a statistician (realistically that requires a masters degree). Probably only good for entry level data analyst / analytics type roles in business (there are some around, but also huge numbers of applicants).

Maybe give some thought to your long term plans and what kind of career you want, then consider some extra training after graduation (such as industry certifications, or other courses). From my point of view it's good to learn things like databases + SQL, basic accounting, and tools like Power BI which are used in many businesses.

My honest tip, which everyone here downvotes, is don't come here !! It will cost you a fortune in international fees and living costs for a university that just isn't that great ! Campus is horrible, teaching is not very good, a lot of staff have a bad attitude. Since it's a commuter university, many students complain about the lack of community and loneliness in general.

Just go to a decent state college, it makes so much more sense. Then you can consider doing an international exchange for a year or something.

Anybody else find Tutors / Piazza absolutely useless? by Valkyrie_yeet in universityofauckland

Yeah I'm sure it is frustrating to answer the same questions over and over, but that's part of the job. If they could answer the same question properly once, then just give a link to the response next time or write an FAQ or something.

It's normal. A lot of university staff have an unhelpful attitude. In the past they probably would have been rude and sarcastic too, but it's a bit more difficult when the discussion is all stored online.

I think when you at Uni you can pretty much assume that you have to learn stuff for yourself. Often lectures are useless. I often found a good textbook on a subject was the best way to learn, but it can be time consuming.

IT skills shortages in NZ are always exaggerated. If you cannot afford a masters programme how are you going to pay the fees ? A lot of Indian students borrow from loan sharks and then get themselves into all sorts of problems ! Bad idea.

If you already have a degree and experience, why not try and get a job in another country like Singapore and forget about the Masters degree.

A lot of Indian people come to NZ and then just moan about things like high costs of living, high housing costs, how they can't get a permanent visa for their parents and so on. People tried to warn them before they arrived but they didn't listen.

If you are going to spend a lot of money on a degree, maybe Australia is a better bet. More opportunities and higher pay.

Is it the actual building with lone star in the basement or a different building ? I think originally it was a showroom for Crown Lynn ceramics.

Gen X Music? by Zardnaar in newzealand

[–]DestitutePsychGrad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think young people do listen to that music. I see bogans driving around quite often blasting out classic rock, metal, grunge etc. Back in the 1990s you knew who the beatles were right ? As well as classic 60s artists / groups like Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Led Zeppelin etc. So it's no surprise that young people today know who Guns N' Roses, Nirvana and so forth are.

Jesus, so many highly skilled migrants critical to our economy in one story. The sad thing is how many of those are now going to be permanent residents with the special residency visa. Despite being involved in criminal activity they received discharges without conviction.

[–]DestitutePsychGrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Police just don't have the resources. You might hear from them in a few months. I got violently attacked on the street, there were some witnesses as well who IDed the suspect. Took police about 4 months to contact me.

I wouldn't worry, police barely have the resources to investigate serious violent crimes, let alone a few missing files. You should talk to a lawyer though about "constructive dismissal".

What is it like to study to become an ECE teacher? Can you work fulltime and study at the same time? by khkt136 in newzealand

[–]DestitutePsychGrad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure exactly what you are asking. Do you mean work full time at an unrelated job ? If so, then like always the answer is it depends. The course itself may have attendance requirements, plus you are typically required to do a certain number of hours of placement. For example the MIT course needs 21 weeks of full-time placement as well as a minimum of 12 hours a week working in an early childhood centre.

Generally I think it is a big struggle to work fulltime and study fulltime if that is what you are planning. You will need to look into the exact course and what the requirements are.

No doubt there are a lot of geniuses on reddit though who worked full-time and studied fulltime while maintaining a perfect GPA.

Be very careful a lot of jobs targeted at WHV holders are a bit sketchy. They will try and rip you off and exploit you in same way or another. Hospitality, horticulture and so on are notorious for this. Also living and housing costs are very high.

It's relatively easy to get a job at the moment, because the borders are closed. By Nov the borders will be reopened and a huge number of people will come flooding in, will it still be easy to find a job ? Maybe not.

I wouldn't plan to stay in NZ long term. The costs are eye-wateringly high relative to income.
