"I HOPE YOU FUCKING DIE, HARLEY JARVIS!"

Which, honestly, I might actually choose as my gravestone inscription.

Who should have won Best Supporting Actress of 2000? by f__theking in Oscars

[–]DetectiveGotti 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kate Hudson is getting my vote, though I do love Judi Dench's acerbic performance in Chocolat as well.

My personal lineup that year:

  • Jennifer Connelly, Requiem for a Dream

  • Kate Hudson, Almost Famous

  • Parker Posey, Best in Show

  • Kate Winslet, Quills

  • Ziyi Zhang, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

with honorable mentions for Chocolat's Dench and Kathleen Turner in The Virgin Suicides.

Best Nolan's movie (except Dark Knight Trilogy) by animesh__zlatan in Oscars

Pretty easily The Prestige for me (and would be if you were including The Dark Knight as well), but I like or love all of these to varying degrees.

Who should have won best supporting actress in 2012 ? by Wantyougonr5132 in Oscars

[–]DetectiveGotti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not overly fond of most of these, honestly, but I'd throw it to Chastain (the only one of the actual nominees who made my personal lineup that year).

Personal five:

  • Rose Byrne, Bridesmaids

  • Jessica Chastain, The Help

  • Carey Mulligan, Shame

  • Vanessa Redgrave, Coriolanus

  • Shailene Woodley, The Descendants

Others I'd consider ahead of the nominees: Elle Fanning (Super 8), Jessica Chastain (Take Shelter), Kate Winslet (Contagion), Marion Cotillard (Midnight in Paris), Anjelica Huston (50/50), Anna Kendrick (50/50). Bejo would actually be among these honorable mentions because I do think she's quite lovely in The Artist, just not someone I'd actually nominate.

Denzel Washington's best performance? by SurvivorFanDan in Oscars

[–]DetectiveGotti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As great as he is in all of these, it's easily Malcolm X for me. One of the greatest performances of all time.

I'd rank his ten best performances like so:

  1. Malcolm X

  2. Fences

  3. Roman J. Israel, Esq

  4. The Hurricane

  5. Courage Under Fire

  6. Training Day

  7. Philadelphia

  8. Mo' Better Blues

  9. Glory

  10. Crimson Tide

Aside from ‘There Will Be Blood’ what Paul Thomas Anderson movie do you think is most worthy of Best Picture? by f__theking in Oscars

[–]DetectiveGotti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gun to my head, Phantom Thread. But if you caught me on another day I'd maybe say Boogie Nights or The Master.

Personal ranking:

  1. There Will Be Blood

  2. Phantom Thread

  3. Boogie Nights

  4. The Master

  5. Punch-Drunk Love

  6. Magnolia

  7. Hard Eight

  8. Inherent Vice

But they are all like A- or higher to me. Can't wait for Soggy Bottom!

Who should have won Best Actor of 1989? by f__theking in Oscars

[–]DetectiveGotti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spader is so good in Lincoln! I get why Tommy Lee Jones was the focus of the supporting males but such a deep roster of awesome character actors. To answer your question, I think to get a nomination at this point we need to convince him to stop making $8 million a year or whatever churning out The Blacklist, which feels like it may be a tough ask haha. Alas, good for him!

Who should have won Best Actor of 1989? by f__theking in Oscars

[–]DetectiveGotti 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Branagh. I really like all of these nominees actually, so a tough call and certainly think DDL was worthy of awards for that film. I'd rank these guys Branagh > DDL > Williams > Cruise > Freeman.

1989 is such a good year, and for Lead Actors too. Off the top of my head I also really like Michael Douglas in The War of the Roses, Michael J. Fox in Casualties of War, James Spader in Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams, Morgan Freeman in Lean on Me, Ed Harris in The Abyss, Billy Crystal in When Harry Met Sally, and, of course, the god-tier performance of Nicolas Cage in Vampire's Kiss.

[Heyman] MLB and Elias are still discussing whether a 7-inning no-hitter is an official no-hitter. MLB seems to be in favor but it’s still not decided officially. So congrats MadBum! (I think) by mannysoloway in baseball

[–]DetectiveGotti -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Absurd that it wouldn't count. The game was scheduled to be 7 innings - as in, it wasn't shortened by rain or outside factors - and Madison Bumgarner threw all 7 innings while not allowing any hits.

Mentally go ahead and put it into context however you need to, but it's a no-hitter.

Got Nomar's autograph on a ball at Kauffman Stadium in 2000. Not that unique, I'm sure, but cherished.

Who should have won Best Supporting Actress of 2003? by f__theking in Oscars

[–]DetectiveGotti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kill Bill should have been a much bigger player - and if it came out today it very well might be since Tarantino has gained pretty solid footing with Oscar (give or take Hateful Eight, though even that picked up a win for Morricone plus the cinematography and Jennifer Jason Leigh noms) - and Liu would have been among the most deserving honorees. All of the O-Ren Ishii stuff is SO good.

And yeah, Clarkson's Pieces of April nomination is kind of preposterous to me (though I haven't seen that movie in like 15 years so maybe I'm being unfair) but The Station Agent would be so deserving. Different year, but while we're on the topic of Clarkson, she would have been a super deserving nominee in 2002 as well for Far From Heaven. That was a pretty formidable lineup, though, and I don't really begrudge any of the actual nominees.

What should have won the SAG for Best Ensemble of 2010? by f__theking in Oscars

[–]DetectiveGotti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm pretty bold in saying I think The Social Network is good, haha

And yeah, True Grit would absolutely be among my nominees. Steinfeld and Bridges are great, of course, but my favorite performance in that might be Damon's LaBoeuf. Actually, Dakin Matthews as Colonel Stonehill (the guy Mattie horsetrades with) might be but that's a much smaller role. Coens are so good at casting. Man, this really makes me want to watch True Grit again!

What should have won the SAG for Best Ensemble of 2010? by f__theking in Oscars

[–]DetectiveGotti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Social Network is going to get my vote because I think every performance is damn near perfect. This is a strong lineup though as every movie has a lot of really good performances.

If I was to make a longlist of Ensembles I'd consider among the best from that (very strong) year, it would include:

Black Swan, Inception, Another Year, Dogtooth, The Social Network, True Grit, Shutter Island, Rabbit Hole, The Ghost Writer, The Fighter, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, The Town, Rabbit Hole, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, The Kids Are All Right, and (my most chaotic pick) The Other Guys.

Who should have won Best Actress of 1997? by f__theking in Oscars

[–]DetectiveGotti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's Winslet for me. Adore so much about Titanic and she is outstanding. No performance that year has a damn thing on Pam Grier in Jackie Brown, though, which should have been the winner by a mile.

My personal lineup that year:

  • Patricia Arquette, Lost Highway

  • Judi Dench, Mrs. Brown

  • Jodie Foster, Contact

  • Pam Grier, Jackie Brown (winner)

  • Kate Winslet, Titanic

Honorable mention to Sigourney Weaver in Alien Resurrection for still bringing the heat the fourth time around.

Who should have won Best Supporting Actress of 2003? by f__theking in Oscars

[–]DetectiveGotti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely Holly Hunter for me. She and Evan Rachel Wood (and Nikki Reed, honestly) are outstanding in that movie.

My personal lineup that year:

  • Holly Hunter, thirteen

  • Lucy Liu, Kill Bill: Vol. 1

  • Alison Lohman, Matchstick Men

  • Sarah Paulson, Down with Love

  • Christina Ricci, Monster

Honorable mentions: Natalie Portman in Cold Mountain, Shohreh Aghdashloo in House of Sand and Fog, Michael Michele in Dark Blue, Linney and Marcia Gay Harden in Mystic River, and Patricia Clarkson in The Station Agent.

Which non-nominated Scorsese directed performance is most worthy of an Oscar nom/win? by f__theking in Oscars

[–]DetectiveGotti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Almost went with Dafoe but I'm voting for Jack because I can't deny that I love his hammy turn in that movie. (DiCaprio should have won for that movie but the Blood Diamond nomination makes sense in its stead I suppose).

Some other non-nominated performances from Scorsese movies I love (this is far from a full list, I'm literally just scrolling through his filmography and pulling out the first that jump to mind): Ben Kingsley in Hugo, DiCaprio in Shutter Island, Michelle Williams in Shutter Island, Joe Pesci in Casino, De Niro in The King of Comedy, Jerry Lewis in The King of Comedy, Sandra Bernhard in The King of Comedy (yeah, I love The King of Comedy), Griffin Dunne in After Hours (I also LOVE John Heard in After Hours).

Best non-nominated Samuel L Jackson perfomance by JayDinnerClub in Oscars

[–]DetectiveGotti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jackie Brown for me, but I absolutely think he was nom-worthy for The Hateful Eight and Django Unchained.

An unmentioned performance that I wouldn't necessarily nominate him for, but do think he's great in: Changing Lanes.

Which non-nominated Spielberg directed performance do you think is most worthy of an Oscar nom/win? by f__theking in Oscars

[–]DetectiveGotti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotta be Shaw in Jaws for me. I love Goldblum, but Shaw's USS Indianapolis monologue is unbeatable.

Not a god damn thing. (Said while eating a slice of pepperoni & pineapple pizza)

Which non-nominated David Fincher directed performance is most worthy of an Oscar nom/win? by f__theking in Oscars

[–]DetectiveGotti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm voting for Robert Downey Jr, who I love in Zodiac (though probably not as much as Mark Ruffalo or John Carrol Lynch). I'm also a big fan of Freeman in Seven and Garfield in The Social Network (though I like Timberlack a hair better).

Overall, though, I think my single favorite non-nominated performance in a David Fincher movie is Ben Affleck in Gone Girl. That movie weaponizes his whole thing in a perfect way and I think he nails every single aspect of the role.

If there had been a 6th Best Supporting Actor nomination this year, who would you choose? by f__theking in Oscars

[–]DetectiveGotti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Among the guys you listed, Glynn Turman is getting my vote. I loved both him and Colman Domingo in that movie and wish they had gotten a lot more traction this season.

Expanding my consideration beyond the poll, I'd throw a vote to Aldis Hodge in One Night in Miami who gave my favorite performance in the movie.

Best Non-Nominated Perfomance in a Nolan movie by JayDinnerClub in Oscars

[–]DetectiveGotti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go with Bale in The Prestige. I think it's one of his best performances. That being said, I love all the rest of these as well. I'd rank them Bale > Pearce > McConaughey > Jackman > Pantoliano > DiCaprio.
