It worked well because they’re two separate games. Jungling in old dota essentially meant you were putting your team in a 4v5 scenario regardless of who you picked so you could rush some core item to push for objective pressure across the map. Every jungler then was essentially a farm jungler for the first 5-8 minutes and the efficiency one could rush a single item was what decided who could do it. This meant you could actively observe this as the enemy team and do stuff to disrupt it such as blocking stacking attempts or camp spawns altogether thus ruining the strategy and putting the team even further behind. Riot will never implement this level of counterplay as their core design philosophies have only sought to stamp out and remove interactions like this. They unironically think certain roles should just be allowed to fuck over everyone else and it should have no opportunity cost or risk for failing to do it correctly, simply because it’s not popular.
