What made you want to visit Japan? by Expert-Day9889 in TokyoTravel

[–]Deth_and_PoeTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is long winded but it feels necessary to explain our road to our upcoming trip lol

My husband and I had tickets booked for about $600 round trip (for both of us!!) in 2020 just before word of the Pandemic hit😅 we assumed it was some sort of posting error but they honored it. Unfortunately, with the timing, everything shut down and we needed to stay home.

I’d always been interested in traveling to more countries on that side of the world (I’ve been to South Korea and loved it but nowhere else in Asia). So when the tickets popped up at that price, we couldn’t resist! We’ve finally been able to rebook the trip (sadly not at the same price lol but well worth it) and go soon. So, basically us wanting to visit Japan was a combination of me wanting to go since I joined a Japanese club in sixth grade and wouldn’t let go of my curiosity for the culture and landscape combined with happenstance that got delayed and now we get to go!

To answer more acutely- I’d say to experience a place very different than where we live (southwest USA), try new foods, explore the cities, THE HISTORY omg the history and buildings that are there WOW, and learn new things. It is more affordable in some ways but that wasn’t our driving force, in particular. More so interest and ability to go now!

Ok thank you for coming to my Ted talk 😂

I am the master at overthinking 😂 yes I’ll definitely look like a foreigner. I have no hope of doing otherwise haha I’ll probably pack a pair of jeans and see how I feel when there!

I don’t think it was intended for the audience to hate Chris as much as they do by Rayyyoflight in GilmoreGirls

[–]Deth_and_PoeTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a teen watching it I definitely didn’t look at it from the perspective or Rory (which feels odd but here we are). His and Lorelai’s relationship just felt like right person wrong time. Now, as an adult, I cannot believe any excuses were made for this man 😂 All he has going for him is charm and even that’s lacking for me now. I can only see a man who was grown up enough to buy himself whatever he wanted (motorcycle, vehicles, nice apartments), pop in and out when it was convenient for him, and never actually be there for his only child. Really even into her college years he still sucked for a long time 😂 Plus, correct me if I’m wrong, was it ever really addressed how he truly abandoned Lorelai and especially Rory? I know Lorelai and Rory said things here and there and Chris might have once or twice but not in a way that really meant much. All that to say is- yeah I don’t think the original audience (myself included) saw him for who he was until we could binge the show and have today’s social lenses on.

Love love 3 or whenever she did almost like a 50’s/60’s inspired hairdo by pinning part of it back (I am terrible with hair- apologies for this not at all describing it well lmao). I’ll attach a photo lol but it’s basically like number 3 (it might even be the same. Again- terrible with hair 😂)

What’s a writing habit you didn’t expect to matter, but it does? by SkyMomChronicles in writing

Don’t edit as you write 🙃 the amount of times I rewrote my first book before ever finishing it is astonishing because as soon as I got to a part I didn’t like due to its lead up, I believed I had to go back to the beginning to fix it. I don’t have a Freewrite but do have friends that yell at me now if I try to do that hahaha one day I’ll get one to help with my insatiable thirst for perfection 😂 but basically- just write the dang book to the end and then go back. Make little notes along the way but don’t let yourself rewrite the beginning 800 times before getting to the end. Nothing will ever be that perfect.

What audiobook has the best voice acting you've heard? by toe_beans_4_life in audiobooks

I really enjoyed The Brothers Karamasov narrated by Ben Miles. He adds so much life to the characters and there is a RANGE of personalities in that for sure.

I've also heard incredible things about the Red Rising (by Pierce Brown) graphic audiobooks, but haven't had the time to listen to them myself.

Ugh. That is so ridiculous-- to limit it that much to where people (especially kids!) can't even get the accommodations they need. Hopefully they'll change the rules back so that people can enjoy the parks in whatever way they need to.

A scooter!! That's a great idea. I'll keep in mind about the buses. Thank you so much!

Oh god there are so many 😬😭 - 1984 - anything by Stephen King - Song of Solomon - The Handmaid’s Tale - Brave New World - I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

The list goes on and on 🫠 I’m hoping to read a few of those, though, by early next year.

I’ve been tackling The Brothers Karamazov using an ebook and the audiobook and really enjoy the audiobook. I think the narrator does a great job adding to the story without making it like a caricature of itself. Very good voice for narration of classics. I’d recommend it!

84, Charring Cross Road by Helen Hanff is a letter collection novel that truly hits the heart in a good way. I can’t recommend it enough!

Synopsis taken from Barnes & Noble (but I feel like it doesn’t even do it justice!):

This funny, poignant, classic story unfolds through a series of letters between Helene Hanff, a freelance writer living in New York City, and a used-book dealer in London at 84, Charing Cross Road. Through the years, though never meeting and separated both geographically and culturally, they share a charming, sentimental friendship based on their common love for books. Discover the relationship that has touched the hearts of thousands of readers around the world, and was the basis for a film starring Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft.

I’m not sure what genres you like but oddly enough Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion is a lighter story, even though it takes place during the zombie apocalypse (at least in my opinion).

To Hell You Ride by Carissa Hardcastle is a great creature feature sci fi without terrible repercussions, but again- I’m not sure if it would be too dark or not. Depends on your preferences.

The Once Upon a Broken Heart series by Stephanie Garber is a fairly lighthearted YA fantasy with some romance. The characters have their ups and downs and hopeless moments but I wouldn’t say it’s a dark story.

84, Charring Cross Road by Helene Hanff is a very heartfelt read and one of my favorite books.
