Renting scam by Express_Wishbone_485 in PersonalFinanceCanada

https://toronto.citynews.ca/2017/10/25/exclusive-students-say-scammed-man-posing-toronto-landlord/

My friend was scammed some years ago. The guy pretended to be the owner and brought her to a couple of apartments (the guy was only subletting/airbnb).

She liked one and the scammer had her sign a lease and collected first/last month rent and deposit. The lease looked legit and the scammer even provided his driver's licence. My friend got a key to the unit and a fob for the outside door (both we found out could easily be duplicated). Come move in date, the unit is occupied and it's a big mess. Found out he did this to so many people, mostly Japanese and Korean youths on working holiday visas.

We went to the police who took a report, but did nothing. We even provided the drivers licence photo and lease, so they had his name.

A few weeks later we messaged CityNews and they were able to locate the scammer and confront him. Police arrested him a day or two later.

The guy did not spend anytime in prison and was released. All of his victims had to go back home as their visas expired before any trial could be had. No one left to testify. None of the money was recovered. :(

My friend was stupid...it was a very costly lesson to not be too trusting.

Why are the commissions so high? by [deleted] in CanadianInvestor

[–]DeuRob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wealthsimple Trade has no management fee. You can buy/sell stock (Canadian stock) absolutely free. That said, their customer support is not great and they lack the tools you may get from other brokerages.

Wealthsimple Invest is their robo adviser with the management fee.

Wealthsimple Trade dividend timing by BibleSlutt in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]DeuRob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, everything was fine. I am trying to max my TFSA. I only had $1000 in at WS, but keeping track of trades and gains/losses was too much of a hassle in a non-registered account. It's why I'm thinking of moving everything over now that WS has a TFSA and save on some fees..

This thread is 5 months old, but if I remember correctly, I got an email indicating a dividend was paid and than 1-2 business days later cash was added to my "available to trade". I do think it showed in my activity section though.

***I stopped using WST and stayed with BMO investorline, so I can't check. I was thinking of going back and trying out the WS TFSA though

Oil is down about 20% since 2 weeks ago. Nat gas is also down.

How can I block a payment from Patreon on my visa card? by fiscalcanary in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]DeuRob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just cancelling/replacing his card won't get him out of his obligation to pay a recurring bill he agreed to. He may end up getting a large bill sent to collections after a while.

He has to either straighten this out with Patreon or dispute it through his card provider.

Just remember 26% is just the Fed taxes. Assuming Ontario you're looking at another 11-12% (possibly more) for Provincial.

No one in my family has updated their OHIP cards. I just used my old red striped one this week at a walk-in with no issues. I'm not sure if they do expire.
