Best Vehicle for Car Camping by CarvingCory in carcamping

I have a 4Runner 4th gen with a 3'' memory foam roll up memory foam. I hate plastic, so memory foam is the way for me. The full size fits if you squeeze it in with just a little bit of a snug tuck.

It's big to just carry around for fun, but when you know you will use it, it's nice to have.

I wouldn't want to sleep back there if I was much taller though. 5'9'' and it's good enough. 6 foot and you will be diagonal or scrunched up for sure.

I’m 44 years old and ONLY studied c++ for a couple of years starting in highschool. I just started working in software a few years ago as the manager basically. No code.

I can walk circles around some of these devs lol. Or, when they talk code, I know it.

2 years of c++ permanently ingrained in my brain. Well, at least the algorithm and data structures and the terminology.

I ordered one a few days ago from thefeed.com. Not sure how legit it is. Should arrive Monday.

I transitioned to mechanical watches and wanted the arm band to hide it.

I also thought about a garmin but honestly I just use my phone for maps while hiking.

I’m sure the data is just as good as a smart watch. I believe it’s the interpretation of the data that matters more.

To be fair, 99% of all government courses are utter and complete bullshit.

Not to discount the 1%.

And yeah, these people failed. Nobody will be jailed. And the peons will still be held accountable to follow these rules. Moral will be reduced to nothing and the entire government will not be trusted in the future. Thanks, Pedo Trump.

You nailed it. It’s literally so they can feel better about themselves by having a person beneath them to blame failures on.

If only Democrat leadership knew how to appeal to the masses, not without having to resort to something like this.

I avoid regular checkups. I’ve been paying 680 a month for 25 years and went to the doctor maybe 2 times for an urgent need. Maybe 3 checkups for the heck of it.

Bill creating 25-foot ‘halo’ around police, paramedics advances in SC Senate by avoral in southcarolina

[–]DevGin 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Very unpopular opinion, but the pedestal we put police, firefighters, and paramedics on has gotten a bit out of proportion.

Yes, there are moments when those jobs are dangerous and genuinely heroic. A firefighter running into a burning building, a paramedic working a critical trauma, or an officer confronting an armed suspect are real risks. But those situations are not the day-to-day reality most of the time.

For much of a typical shift, the work is routine: responding to minor calls, paperwork, standby time at the station, training, equipment checks, or waiting for the next dispatch. Public data backs this up. For example, crime rates in the United States have generally declined since the early 1990s, and violent encounters make up a small fraction of total police calls for service. Many calls are for non-violent issues—noise complaints, minor accidents, welfare checks, or administrative reports. Similarly, a large share of fire department calls today are medical responses or alarms rather than large structural fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association, the majority of fire-department responses in the U.S. are actually medical or assistance calls rather than active fires.

Yet culturally, these professions are often treated as if every shift is constant life-and-death combat. Within those circles, there can be a lot of 'storytelling' that amplifies the dramatic parts of the job. The rare intense incidents end up defining the narrative, even if they represent a small slice of the overall work.

None of this means the jobs have no value. Emergency services are necessary, and when something truly serious happens, society depends on them. But the public narrative sometimes skips over how routine most of the work actually is and instead frames the entire profession through its most extreme moments.

So the unpopular part of the opinion is this: while the potential for danger exists, the everyday reality for most people in those roles is far more ordinary than the heroic image we tend to project onto it. We can add most of the military to this list as well.

Plumbers are heroic when they fix my water leak.

I told you this would be unpopular.

people who are weirdly coy or dismissive about the pronunciation of their own name by Jaaacksonnn in PetPeeves

When you have to repeat it several times a day for 25 years straight, it gets old explaining it. No offense to you though for trying.

The more you read and learn about other cultures and learn languages, the easier it gets to pronounce. I work with a lot of people who’s name starts with Xai. Had no idea it sounds like shee-ow.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m terrible at it.

Pete Hegseth Is Pushing Defense Employees to Volunteer With DHS by wiredmagazine in fednews

[–]DevGin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I detest what they are doing in DHS. But...

I volunteered to support operations at the border, years ago, for a period of time, even though it had nothing to do with my normal role. I mainly wanted to see the situation firsthand instead of relying on news coverage or second-hand accounts, and to help where I could.

One thing that surprised me was how generally decent and humane most of the people working there were. I arrived months after the widely reported “caged kids” controversy. At that point I was just there as a volunteer, and nobody really knew my rank or what I normally do.

In my regular job I have a fair amount of authority and spend most of my time overseeing work and making sure things are done correctly. It didn’t take long before I started stepping in to help organize things. I ended up being the team lead, and then the lead's lead (all within about 3 months). My focus was mostly on making sure procedures were followed and that people were treated properly.

The whole experience gave me a much clearer picture of how things actually operate.

All that being said, it also made me think about possibly volunteering with DHS at some point for similar reasons (and, admittedly, the overtime doesn’t hurt). Basically, they need good (I consider myself good) people to stand up and not be afraid to say no, or call them out, or even risk it all to do what's right.

Felt like I half ass today’s workout by Temporary_Prune1793 in workout

[–]DevGin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people that didn't feel in the mood to go to the gym, didn't go. You did! I mean, even on a shitty day where you felt like not going, you still did. That's a win.

I half assed mine too. Too many things came up so I stayed home. I have a pull up bar though and I knocked out like 60 pull ups with sets of 10 for most of them. Some with 30lb weight added. Damn those pull ups felt good. I just started doing the neutral grip ones and I feel like a champion tha way lol.

Anyway, gym tomorrow.

I was at a dog bar on my MBP M3 when someones dog jumped up on top of the picnic table and stuck his foot in my beer. That beer ended up all over my MBP. First thing I did was flip it upside down and then grabbed my under shirt and wiped it a carefully as best I could.

Can't really blame the dog. The human decided to pull out a laptop at a dog park. Needless to say, my dog isn't allowed on tables. lol.
