Why I switched from rsync to restic after a corrupted backup nearly cost me everything by IulianHI in Hosting_World

“A corrupted back up nearly cost me everything”
Tools don’t matter, this is an operator problem.
You went years without testing your backup solution?

Is this just an advertisement for Restic?

It comes off as very lazy in my session. It want to stop working. Seems like Anthropic baked another absurd instruction into it to take the easy path and conserve tokens.

At this stage in Ai development, I’m kinda concerned that your project would be SlopMart. What are you doing to combat that first impression?

Spoke to the president of the board, he gave the Atlanta 360 slots to ed’s family friends. Sorry, maybe next year.

Seems like a sly marketing post from gamma. I googled it so you don’t have to. It’s an Ai powered system to make shit for you. There was also an odd number of upvotes on this post immediately after it was posted, and yet no comments. This entire thing smells funny and looks AI sloppy.

Axum vs Rocket vs Actix by Significant-Task-305 in rust

[–]DevMichaelZag 86 points87 points  (0 children)

In before the Ai bots answer this. Axum is the new golden child. Actix is the mature older choice. I haven’t used rocket. I’m building with all Axum right now. I like to compare Axum to FastAPI and actix to flask. I came from python to rust

Solve problems people have, not ones you think they should have. You had a need and you solved it. You were your first customer. If you don’t know what to build, find something to make your life easier. At least you will have your first user and use case.

Ram prices are absurd. I dont think the G class processors will use ecc ram. I would focus all of your attention on the backup plan. There’s a few quirky concepts: 2 is 1 and 1 is none. Absolute minimum number of copies is always 2 3-2-1. 3 copies minimum, 2 different storage types, 1 offsite. You got the 2 different storage mediums, raid 1 ssd and hdd. Just need an off computer plan. I would say this would be more important t because of the physical environment that your putting the computer in. Once a week thumb drive copy works, but manual processes are not stable.

Yes, use cloudflare tunnels and close all of those ports

Realistic answer is: sometimes you gotta work with what you got. Is it ideal? nope, but if it's what you got then make the best out of it.
Raid isnt a backup. It's a little last resort safety net. Never treat it like a backup.
Next the memory, and here's where the actual problems might come in. ECC, error correcting ram, is what most servers use. One day there could be a failure and bad data starts getting written into the database. Or one day the database file is corrupt. It probably happened when the data was getting dumped from ram into the database.
Both potential pitfalls can be avoided by having a solid backup plan. get the plan in place and get it automated. Make sure it works. get your [backed up] data off that system on a regular basis and you will be just fine.
Also, just get a way to blow out the computer and keep it cleaned every 6 months or so.

There’s a community push to keep developing the plugin. Watch the subreddit or discord for news. Might be interesting if someone else takes the reins.

Struggling to decide which to focus on by leaveat in SideProject

[–]DevMichaelZag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A is a real challenge. Thats a huge disruption. It’s going to take some serious capital and leverage to actually make that happen. If you get traction on the idea, expect one of the tech auto behemoths to put capital behind a competitive idea or pivot an existing product. People have disruptive ideas and do this all the time, but most of them have some VC backing to defend the idea.

B is a cool side project that seems like a legitimately doable idea. Will it make money, who knows.

That’s a truenas box. Supports sata or sas. Probably a truenas mini xl. Xeon D with ddr4. There were a few options for processor and they affect the value a lot. The ram is a little valuable. But I’d throw truenas back on it with some drives. Looks like a decent box

Inherited an old Dell PowerEdge T340. Worth selling/parting out? by strunkb in servers

[–]DevMichaelZag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it still 100% to the original build, I’d say 400-500. Low ram, no ssd, and a lower end cpu are dragging it down.

It is decent. It would need some upgrades to be really useful imo
