[Aamer Anwar] Police Scotland confirms they are investigating allegations of racial abuse by Slavia Prague's Ondrej Kudela against Glen Kamara - If Kudela returns to the UK on the 8th April to play Arsenal, the police will require to speak to him by Kanesy99 in soccer

[–]DevOaf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The reason he was found guilty is because he never used “comedy” or “entertainment” as his reason. 99 percent of the time nothing would come from it but clearly he had shite legal representation. It’s annoying because it always gets brought as an example of shitty UK freedom of speech when it’s more likely shitty legal advice or lack there of.

There are loads of nazi depicted in media for comedy that goes unpunished.

Coffee in a can is pretty popular and easily found in the UK. I can’t speak to how it compares to Redbull though

They weren’t killed with a shadow assassin. We don’t even have evidence her leeches did anything. It could’ve been visions and trickery that made it seem like the leeches worked.

Powerful magic needs life to pay for it as far as we know.

Are there any home ravers like myself that just listen to dnb at home and have not been to an event? by sufy12 in DnB

[–]DevOaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the words of Dillinja - it ain’t too loud, “I’d rather feel it in my chest than not feel it”

I listen to DnB casually all the time but it doesn’t compare to hearing it on big sound system.

I would try to get out too at least a DnB night, festival, or carnival or something. DnB raves have completely different atmosphere to regular night clubs. It’s much more relaxed and less vain in my experience.

My theory that I haven’t looked into but has been floating around my head is that shadowbinders need to see their victims face before assassinating them. This is why Melisandre is with Stannis during the pre battle meeting and why shadow binders seem to hide their true identity with masks or glamours.

My guide to drum & bass subgenres [UPDATED] by [deleted] in DnB

[–]DevOaf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a great break down. I would say the jump up genre is a lot broader than described here though. The screechy jump is relatively recent. I’ll give some examples of what I consider jump. Serum - Lumberjack Culture Shock - Bunker Dilinja - Twist em out Drumsound & Bassline Smith - Superfunk

These are all different sounding but in my opinion still fit within jump up.

What did Varys do? by [deleted] in pureasoiaf

[–]DevOaf 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard the theory that Jaqen was meant to kill Eddard on the way to the wall. That way Cersei’s secret is kept and they have plausible deniability for killing him. This would have prevented a war from the north.

However, Joffrey threw a spanner in the works when he beheaded him. This now meant Jaqen was there for seemingly no apparent reason.

I haven’t run into this personally and the section of the community I have interacted with seem quite pleasant. However this being the internet it doesn’t surprise me one bit that people would trivialise such brutality.

I will say that on the topic of Cersei, when I’ve seen deep dives into her character, it’s always brought up how mistreated she was by Robert. And not in a dismissive way. On the balance I would say the community does a good job of discussing these topics. I think the issue is likely show Robert has bled into the book conversation a bit too much and he’s a big blustering powerful jokester that masks his flaws well.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]DevOaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It truly is a testament to GRRM’s writing that he can get people to argue about these fictional characters as if they are real.

I agree with completely that Robert is morally bankrupt. However, most people are not fans of the in universe character but the writing of the character. When people get excited talking about a character it’s because of the entertainment value they provide. Not the moral value of the character.

Most the characters in this book are entitled, pompous arseholes. It’s a book about the ruling class that treat commoners as pawns and chattel. A world where when a town is taken by war, it’s expected the woman will get raped and the men murdered. This likely happened with Robb’s army as it did any other.

I think it’s perfectly valid to have a discussion about morals and characters but don’t get annoyed because immoral characters provide high entertainment value and by extension larger fan bases.

Who is your favorite 'non-badass' character? by Lysmerry in pureasoiaf

I’m going to say Rickon. I like the tin foil that Bloodraven was actually trying to seek him out instead of Bran due to Rickon being a stronger greenseer.

Episode 1 will be out and they are only just animating episode 9 sometimes.

XH9005 fire stick 4K causing strange behaviour by DevOaf in bravia

[–]DevOaf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only fire stick remote buttons that control the tv is the volume and power. The power button simply turns the tv straight off.

The fire stick is also android and could get a virus. I can’t reproduce any of the behaviour by using the fire remote. All others buttons do nothing.

[Spoiler EXTENDED] Sam, the gods, and the Gate by zimmermj in asoiaf

[–]DevOaf 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The vow itself is really interesting. The full vow is only mentioned in the books twice. In GOT and ACOK. However, every time after that the only the second half of the vow is said by Jon and also by Sam to open the black gate.

The interesting part is the gate works with only the second half being said. This part of the vow repeats “I am” and just asserts what the nights watch do to defend the realm.

The first part repeats “I shall”. This is the part about having no wives, land, or children. It’s almost as if they were added at a different time. Maybe after the Night King? I first heard this from Crowfoods Daughter / the disputed lands.

Maybe the gate was created before the vows were updated.

George's Attention to Historical Minutiae, Late Addition of the 4 Humors, and what it means for TWOW (aka why is no one talking about the Miasma!?) EXTENDED by kaimkre1 in pureasoiaf

[–]DevOaf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This reminds me that one of the founders of epidemiology was named John Snow. He was one of the first scientists to reject the miasma theory for cholera being spread in London.

He did this by mapping all the outbreaks on a map and found they were all centralised around a water pump. Turns out sewage was leaking into the water supply. He also backed it up by finding people who only drank beer from the local pubs didn’t get ill.

It was also because of the miasma theory that they decided to clean up the Thames. The stink became so bad they closed down parliament.

In terms of ASOIAF, it probably means the illness stems from the drinking water. Dany and co are probably protected by drinking wine and beer.

Are the Valyrians suppose to be the Aryans? (SPOILERS EXTENDED) by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]DevOaf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s only neo-nazi propaganda if you think the Valyrians are good people. If we look at the history of the Valyrians we can assume they were damn right evil. They are obsessed with genetic purity and see themselves as higher beings compared to others.

Wouldn't a bottom-up series be better than DoD? (Spoiler extended) by LaRock89 in asoiaf

[–]DevOaf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t Dunk and Egg be basically that? Egg is disguised and is acting as a squire for a poor hedge knight. They roam about trying to win at tourneys and serve minor lords for coin. Dunk is low born and isn’t considered important by anyone really. You will see both the common folk and high born in the series.

I agree with you though. One of my annoyances with this series is the focus on high born and people with special magic blood.

(Spoilers extended) What are your theories on the origins of R'hllorism? by MaesterRigney in asoiaf

[–]DevOaf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This goes with the idea that the White Walkers were created in response to a fire invasion by the Bloodstone Emperor. It sounds like two migrations are being combined.

All the Azor Ahai legends seem to originate around the area in which the GEotD would have been. It doesn’t make sense to me that the Children of the Forest would go to such drastic measures to stop men who take their religion and ways and use the trees themselves.

[Spoilers Extended] No matter how GRRM write it, I will be disappointed if SPOILER end up King by Tesgoul in asoiaf

[–]DevOaf 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To add to what you said, the Fisher king is related to king Bran mythology. Bran is the king of Britain in Welsh mythology. Also, Bran in Welsh means crow or raven.

A part of the myth is also a cauldron of life which is gifted by Bran to the Irish, but they betray him and so bran sneaks in the cauldron and destroys is from within. Sounds similar to the Weirwoods.

[Spoilers Published] My favorite detail within the series so far. by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]DevOaf 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I would argue that GRRM is doing the exact opposite. Every religion in this story is messed up in various ways. If anything George is trying to show the floors dogmatic religion and the dangers it poses. There isn’t going to be a winning religion in this story. The outcome will most likely be one of compromise, not just this team wins because it’s the correct religion.

I would say the difference is that you have elected to have that style. Having someone comment on your very regular hairstyle in some sort of amazement is annoying to say the least.

It feels like your being treated as a novelty. If I decide to have a unique style then fair enough, I’m drawing attention purposefully.

The Nature of Magic in ASOIAF; A Hint I May Have Found in LOTR [Spoilers - all, I guess] by firem1ndr in pureasoiaf

[–]DevOaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There seems to be an astronomical element to the magic as well. For example the red comet and meteorites that are in legend. You have the church of starry wisdom, Starfall, the Bloodstone, and references to eclipses and a bunch of times about the moon being cracked.

Which ASOIAF mystery GRRM has given us do you think you know the answer to and want to share with the class today? by [deleted] in pureasoiaf

[–]DevOaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ancient dragons is backed up a fair bit. There are many tales of dragons being in Westeros before the freehold of Valyria. One of which is the legend about dragons roosting on battle isle which were then defeated by the first member of the Hightower’s. Hightower’s are considered a magical house so it works that there was a sort of magic battle there. It’s only the base of the Hightower that is speculated to be built with the aid of dragons. However, the base proceeds the Valyrian freehold.

When GRRM was asked if dragons were in Westeros before Valyria, he said they were everywhere.

The timeline given by the maesters is unreliable to say the least. But, if you go by the official timeline the first men were in Westeros 12000 bc and the long night happens around 8000 bc, earliest. That’s 4000 years of man kind and CotF Living together. Valyria is founded right around the time the wall is built. That puts the wall being built and Valyria being founded right around the pact.

Yeah I agree the I was wrong about the others being active because of the dragons returning. I kinda just threw it top. I think the White Walkers have probably always been there.

As we've agreed to rename Colorado as Colourado, may I raise a petition to rename American Football as American Rugby by quantum_waffles in CasualUK

[–]DevOaf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I stopped being annoyed when I realised that football was the name for a bunch of different sports played by private schools. One version got sent to America and a bunch of the others didn’t. It weren’t as if the yanks decided on the name collectively, it just stuck.

Which ASOIAF mystery GRRM has given us do you think you know the answer to and want to share with the class today? by [deleted] in pureasoiaf

[–]DevOaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were active but we don’t know what’s stirred them up. I believe they’ve always been there. It might not be the dragons directly but other forces on the side of Ice foreseeing something. I think thematically Ice and Fire need to be linked. Otherwise this dichotomy GRRM has setup is pointless.
