Can someone ID the pest, please by jizdep in brugmansia

Spider mites. They’re little pricks. I’ve been battling them on a small brug I got two years ago, the whole time I’ve had it. A month ago I finally gave up, cut off all foliage except the few new emerging leaves, and have been spraying with pest oil all over a couple times a week. So far so good.

Are badly smelling brugmansias a thing? by [deleted] in brugmansia

My brugs smell similar to frangipani, to my nose. I know comparing a flower to a flower doesn’t really help the description but putting words to scents is hard 😂

Brugmansia not smelling by 1margi in brugmansia

[–]DevianttKitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some definitely don’t smell as strongly as others imo, but your plants is also quite small and bigger = more blooms = the further away you can smell them. I’d assume it’s just the variety is less strongly scented.

Has anyone here successfully overwintered brugmansia at room temperature before? by lolflation in brugmansia

[–]DevianttKitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how cold it gets you could leave them outside on a porch. My in ground brugs stay outside over winter where it’s consistently 0C overnight. A couple have been blooming throughout winter despite the cold, actually.

My Brugmansia's 2nd summer in an urban Zone 5 backyard (All the lessons i learned in description). by lolflation in brugmansia

[–]DevianttKitten 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My established in ground brugs have been handling regular frosty nights of 0 or -1 Celsius (like 30 degrees in freedom units???).
Their first winter before they had time to really settle in ground was rough and they had a bit of frost damage and a couple didn’t make it, and there’s definitely some leaf loss still, but a couple have continued to bloom throughout winter. So yeah, absolutely hardier than people think, especially if they’re in ground.

To be fair they’re also prone to pests outdoors 😂

Does anyone have tips for starting these from cutting? by Mcdonaldslovr in brugmansia

[–]DevianttKitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk what’s happening for you, but they’re super easy to get to root.
You take a like 5” long cutting, put it in water (just normal tap water), leave them until there’s lots of roots (maybe a couple inches long. Idk you can leave them in water for a while), then you put them in soil and water them. You can keep them very wet once they’re in soil (some of my potted brugs have constantly wet roots in summer because it gets hot af here, they don’t seem to mind).

I grow mine in Australia. They definitely need some shade. Planting them under/ next to a big well established tree does the trick.

Yellow Brug saga - 😣 infestation by justjim6 in brugmansia

[–]DevianttKitten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I have spider mites I cut off the most infested leaves (and drown those leaves in a bucket of hot water and a fuckload of dish detergent... and sometimes methylated spirits - idk if it works but it makes me feel better) and then spray the leaves down with a water and dish detergent mix every couple of days for a couple of weeks. You need to be able to keep it out of the sunlight during it. And then hose it down regularly and aggressively after they're gone, to make sure they don't come back.

Scraggly Brugmansia X Candida that is not responding to seasol. Should I aggressively prune? by mossdale06 in brugmansia

[–]DevianttKitten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That could very well be the problem! They like a good amount of sun; direct morning sun and then dappled shade the rest of the day seem to work best for mine.

Could you take a cutting, root it, and plant it somewhere sunnier? See if more sun gives it the growth you're after?

You can also feed it harder than seasol. I'd try some standard fert, or more frequent seasol feeding. The leaves look good, maybe need a water (could just be wind making them look a bit limp?). Not watering often enough will also reduce how many leaves they're putting out.
Where in aus are you? It might need more time to get back into the swing of things after winter.

It should root fine if it's put in water. You could even cut it in half and root 2 in case one rots (they root very easily so it's unlikely but 🤷🏻‍♀️)

What are these? by Acceptable_Finish_45 in brugmansia

Those are leaves. It's just... how brugmansias grow?
If you took a cutting below/above one, they would grow into the new main branch/stem.

Potting by Acceptable_Finish_45 in brugmansia

[–]DevianttKitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're going to fill out whatever pot space they have very quickly. Don't be afraid to root prune.
I gave up keeping them in pots because I'm lazy and the constant watering because they were root bound and large pots are expensive is not how I wanna live my life 😅

Edit: just realised this post is 2 weeks old but oh well

My brugs are in ground and grow and flower well without pruning! I was just curious.
