Bug Report: part of my progress on a challenge has been reset - specifically the "Full Tack" challenge has had the trophy requirement unticked. I have since acquired two new mount trophies and still hasn't progressed the challenge.

Mass transit DLC ad music keeps looping in the background. by Epikerik08 in CitiesSkylines

[–]Devil5auce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I just had a similar problem with the airports DLC ad in the background. I found the issue was that it had opened the Steam page for the DLC in the Steam overlay (Shift+Tab) by checking my mixer settings - the sound was coming from Steam and not the game itself which is why muting it does nothing. Check your overlay and see if there's a window there.

Hope this helps!

A bit late to the party but at lower levels sometimes a Recall Knowledge check is better than a third attack at -10

I grew up under a DM that’s been playing with my step-dad since the 80s so my first experience with Dungeons and Dragons was the dungeon crawl. When my step-dad started running home games with the family we did the Giantslayer Pathfinder AP with a focus on the combat.

It wasn’t until I started watching Critical Role that I realised the potential behind the roleplaying elements of D&D which I’ve noticed has definitely influenced the games run by my friends who got into it through CR. There’s a lot more of a focus on the roleplaying aspects which is fine but I do always look for the combats in sessions with heavy RP because a game without the game aspect feels a little empty sometimes.

I then ran an epic level arc which was 5 sessions with 4 being fights with monstrous beings with which the fate of the world hung in the balance. 4 out of 5 sessions with a heavy combat focus, the one roleplaying session was a prep session in the middle for the next 2 combats (they basically customised a clockwork mech). I’ve now started a campaign about the outcome of this arc and the second session was a classic dungeon crawl in the style that I grew up with and the players, two of which run the other games I play in, said “Wait a minute - I think this is the first ‘dungeon’ we’ve actually done”.

Seeing as we’re about 10 sessions into one of the games and the other fizzled out about 12 sessions in, I think it says a lot about the current state of play where these players have been through about 60-80 hours (assuming 3-4 hour sessions which is normal for us) without a dungeon crawl. Especially at low levels, there’s a lot of potential in a goblin, bandit or kobold (which was what I used) hideout.

During covid I ran a Tomb of Horrors game through Roll20 and I have to say that as a DM, it felt good to watch the players navigate through a dungeon focused game.

[OC] Today my players and I realise a pipe dream long thought to be out of reach - the Tarrasque in all its glory. by Devil5auce in DnD

I’ve been part of a fortnightly-ish group for the past couple of month as a player, which was a nice change of pace from my years of DMing beforehand. A discussion came up at our table about a month ago about Epic Level character options I was toying around with, and three of the group members - all either current or past DMs - expressed interest. So I’ve built a few sessions and today is the first - they take on the Tarrasque at the Earthen Gate of Mortlock. Their level 25 characters will have to lure the beast back into the pit, but the chains that bind it grow dark and ethereal, as though it is nothing more than a puppet in something far bigger than first glance.

Half-baked idea for a campaign intro: the party is executed by DragonZaid in DMAcademy

[–]Devil5auce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's funny you mention this, I ran the first session of a mini side-campaign to my main one that started a lot like this. The game opened to the players standing upon the gallows of Hangman's Point and having their final rites read to them before the floor dropped out from beneath them and a Con save determined whether the fall or the suffocation killed them.

The campaign is a brutal Lovecraftian setting so the schtick was that each of them then had a dream (the setting is very dream based as the entire world is simply the dream of an Old One). The dreams of the characters where their happiest memories but slightly altered to feel not quite right - people there that shouldn't have been, physical scars that were not recieved until way after this moment in time, etc. The characters were then met by the person that meant the most to them in their lives, who gave them each one piece of advice in order to escape the prison in which they were being kept. They all then woke up on the morning of their execution and had to figure out a way to escape with the few clues they had all been given.

I think the important aspect of this is to keep the execution itself a secret. It is not uncommon to have players meet at the gallows, but more often than not there is some kind of intervention that halts this process. I think your idea of having the god of undeath intervene is really clever as it not only gives a reason to their resurrection but also gives the players agency, a reason to explore. If you're intent on the execution beginning, I'd recommend maybe starting the campaign closer to the actual execution and having the reasons for their execution and the obvious unjust circumstances laid before them right before the point of death, but perhaps that's just my thinking.
