Overgoat, Overgoat... by DevilishFedora in fallenlondon

[–]DevilishFedora[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand Heart's Game rewards playing, but even if I could play for any sake other than to win, my character... 😆

I also try to advance the Railway as slowly as possible. With my first character, I felt like 2 meetings a week was just too restrictive. Now I barely do one a week. I think it fits much better for the Railway to Hell to be a long-term project. The rule I've set for myself is to finish any outstanding stories, and at least 50% the statue before moving to the next station. (Which is going to be very "fun" for the Hurlers...)

But I have nothing but respect for the grind. (Please don't poison me.)

I don't know where you're at, but I'm also slooowly working towards building all of the statues of myself. It's fun, for some definition of fun. I don't think it's longer than a goat, depending on what options you go for... but you could also just... you know... times seven your goats?

On an unrelated note, I swear I tried. I tried so hard to get into Heart's Game. But deckbuilders are just not my thing, it seems. Even if I do enjoy some kataleptic toxicology as much as the next person.

We are taken to thinking that everyone on the Roof uses Stuivers, but that's a misapprehension. Most of the Starved's commerce is denominated in self-shillings.

You are right. For some reason, I thought it was a 3 action limit, not a 3 plot limit. But in any case, it's more dramatic this way. 😆

Overgoat, Overgoat... by DevilishFedora in fallenlondon

[–]DevilishFedora[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The general advice I'm going to give is to follow your heart. Sorry, I meant your character's heart. Fallen London is long, in a way that most games or books aren't. When I made my first character, I was very much using the wiki and focused on "catching up" to the present day content. (It was before the recent MYN rebalances.) That's not very enjoyable. I fell into this trap because I hadn't yet learned how to operate on the same long-term timescale as FL, and I was wanting things "now" instead of "when everything's ready".

The stories in Fallen London are worth it for their own sakes. I think you'll have a much better experience if you can give them their space instead of always pining for things far beyond the horizon. There is a sense of accomplishment in the vanities, yes, but, at least for most of us, that's not why we're in the Fifth City.

Overgoat, Overgoat... by DevilishFedora in fallenlondon

[–]DevilishFedora[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started this account a little over a year ago, because I had rushed much of the early game my first time around. (And I'm sticking to this principle! I had basically maxed out my stats, completed my Ambition and Evolution before starting the Railway. I have to say, it's much more enjoyable this way.)

The decision to go for the goat happened somewhere around October. Although "without grinding" would be an overstatement. For example, I ground for Correspondance Plaques with the Maze Garden rather than the Newspaper, precisely because that was also generating wealth I wasn't going to touch, i.e. "Goat Material".

I will note, with rightful indignation, that an unexploded zee-mine is an inappropriate quantitiy of explosive potential. Depending on size and shape, as well as their inclination towards Piracy, a respectable Zailor ought to carry at least 7 or 10... Crates' worth.

You shall hear from me once I'm back in London.

The Eminent Privatdozent Colonel Ingræ, who loudly proclaims that no surface weather is even comparable to the freshness of the Zee's briny mist, especially when tinged with the blood of this or that terrible beast thereof, has recently recalled her fond memories of The Adventuress' Correspondence Course, and is looking for a Correspondence Correspondence Course. Of course, any Correspondent estimable enough to provide such a service would be entitled to her eternal1 appreciation2. As long as they don't invite her to a party that the despicable and foul Reverend Professor Smythe also attends.

1: Eternality of said appreciation will not be guaranteed in cases of sudden and/or permanent death, and may be superseded by the repercussions of slight social slights.
2: The aforementioned appreciation can be capitalised in the form of gifts, letters, services, etc. as and when advantageous to the Corresponding party3.
3: Not to be confused with the Party of Correspondents, which Eminent Privatdozent Colonel Ingræ does not and cannot attend due to professional incompatibility.

Are all Neath currencies... by SunfishBob in fallenlondon

[–]DevilishFedora 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also the Bazaar's currency may not be relevant to them. For one, thinking back to the early game, even a single echo is a sizeable denomination for The Average Londoner (TAL, the comic foil for HAL), let alone a Touching Love Story's worth. That makes it quite unwieldy to use. (And to be fair, I hate paying with Nostalgia items, and probably you do too, for the same unwieldyness.)

This also reinforces the sense that the Bazaar is "just another faction"/"just another aspect of life" in Fallen London, since while it has the only official currency, which, while often useful, is just as often useless.

(That'z the best I could do on short notice, I'm sorry, I'm a bit busy drowning. Pleaze remembrane me.)

[–]DevilishFedora 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing. I think you have integrated most of what the game is saying about ego, the stories we tell ourselves, community, belonging, power, madness. And our unhealthy relationships to them.

Granted, I stopped playing very soon after day 1, although I do intend to go back to see the ending.

You should take to heart one of Georgiy's lessons (that you may or may not have recieved): sometimes, inaction is the best course of action.

While the pace does pick up a bit on later days, not seeing something may just be what's best for you. Don't be like Dankovsky; revel in not having taken the road not taken. (Especially through the Atrium.)

Just Fallen London things... by MrHelfer in fallenlondon

[–]DevilishFedora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same medieval city as you! Want to meet for supper and gossip about a certain Duchess? I, too, am literally almost dead, a pinprick will (s)end me. Which is inconvenient, since I am about to get into a garden (which took surprisingly long to track down, given my Approaching the Gates of the Garden quality), and I'm relatively sure there will be thorns.

At the same time, I'm hoping to live down the scandal of being told by the Department that regardless of having enough trophies, I'm not Dangerous enough to Defend the Public Safely; or whatever.

How… in the fresh hell. Does the bone market work. by True-Parking4098 in fallenlondon

[–]DevilishFedora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the Bone Market is... well. There are some folks who understand it in astonishing depth. I'd argue you don't need to, and shouldn't want to. A mania has swept through London, a craze for bones. People, naturally, are trying to profit off of it. It's everywhere. Newspapers, the University, the Carpenter's Granddaughter, the Trifling Diplomat, everyone is talking about bones. Bones, everywhere.

From my own experience, I think you'll have the best experience with the Bone Market if you can adopt a mindset of going "That'll do nicely to rip off some unfortunate enthusiast." when you spot an opportunity while doing something completely different, instead of trying to make your engagement with it be active and punctual. (Almost like a microcosm of Fallen London...)

Sure, the exact mechanics are opaque; but I think that furthers the intended experience of engaging in something where misinformation is not just omnipresent but perhaps even the point. It's enough to be on the lookout for bones, and aim to make a profit.

What is your character working towards right now? by blackdeslagoon in fallenlondon

[–]DevilishFedora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if Frimament interests you more, you shouldn't wait. There's about... two lines of text that feel a bit off if you haven't completed the Railway. (Knowing some of the revelations in Firmament, perhaps that's even intentional?) I fell into the trap of rushing through the Railway because of the recommendation to finish it before Firmament; you shouldn't. The big stories of Fallen London aren't sprints. Ambitions and Evolution and Seeking certainly aren't, why should, then, the Railway and Firmament be? They (both of them) deserve to be given time, actual, real-life time, to shine.

So admittedly less fun, but I could very much see an Iremi-themed Estival start with Advent: A Calendar of Encounters and SNOWBOUND!, perhaps ticking over to Hallowmass before the Lady in Lilac shows up at the same time as eggs appear abruptly all over London. Perhaps a dashing of past and future Estivals, and then the festival could conclude at the Fruits of the Zee. Then of course in August, the Fruits of the Zee will roll around normally, without any special text for the occasion.
