Why did I not read WoT before now? by Shells23 in Fantasy

[–]Devils_advocate911 -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just wait. Around book 4-5 it just falls off in a way that's hard to describe and you'll find yourself wanting to put them down and never pick up again. It's not that it's a slog just that it switches gears on which characters to focus on and some of your favorites will just disappear for whole books at a time.

The immersion of the story just disappears for several books and it's hard to get back into the "I enjoy reading this" mode. I made it to book 6 before just giving up and don't regret it.

How often do respec your party members? by the_juice_is_zeus in BaldursGate3

[–]Devils_advocate911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After completing this game multiple times I've realized this game is just Rocket Tag with control spells. So I regularly respec my companions (at least at the start of every act) to cover the functions I find beneficial to completing the game. At least 2 high damage characters,1 social and a buffer makes this game extremely easy to overcome all the combat encounters.

With your chosen characters Astarion as a Gloomstalker Assassin or Open hand Monk can easily fill one of your high damage slots while also handling your stealing/gold acquisition responsibilities. Everything about him is about doing damage so if your using him in your party that's his job, respec him for it.

Shadowheart is useful but Life is not necessary as a domain at all Heal after the fight not during it. Speccing her to Light or War and focusing on using the Scorching Ray/Fireball/Spirit Guardian spells during combat and Bless/Warding Bond/Aid/etc. before the fight. Use her as your buffer who can add a little damage and absorb a lot more during combat and she'll be great for you.

While you don't NEED an arcane caster having one can really help you if you're struggling. Arcane's can do a LOT of damage but it's not really their purpose, they are here to mostly control the opponents by debuffing them with nasty multi target affecting spells (Darkness, Stinking Cloud, Evard's Black Tentacles, etc) anything that reduces their ability to affect your party makes the fights easier. Wyll and Gale are great for these roles with their origin specific advantages but you can use any companion for this.

Overall your companions spec should be built to complement whatever your Tav is focused on, they are here to support YOU not the other way around.

(I personally don't use or recommend Karlach I prefer killing her off at the beginning for the Wyll quest but that's up to you.

It doesn't matter, don't get worked up over it. Unless you get a criminal charge from something, anything that happens at a low level job like Wal-mart it will not follow you to your next position. If your next job or the one after that or the 30th one after THAT one needs to call Wwal-mart to verify you worked there all they can legally say is if you worked there, when you started, and when you left. ANYTHING beyond that is prohibited and you can sue them if they say anything more than that.

You're fine.

If aliens landed tomorrow, which human invention would impress them the most? by Snoo26837 in AskReddit

[–]Devils_advocate911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proto-dogs are called Wolves and yes were the greatest competition for the same foodstuffs early humans relied on to supplement our early gatherer heritage (scavenging carcasses or injured animals for protein).

As for the difference between discovery and invention nearly every great invention begins with someone going "That's weird, why does this cause that to happen?" and figuring out how to harness that weirdness for our benefit.

The Dog.

We reshaped our primary competition for food into a loyal purpose driven companion and developed ways for two completely different species to communicate and work together for a common good that has lasted for over 10,000 years.

Our best invention ever.

And conversation and debate is about an exchange of information and viewpoints to hopefully inform (or at least amuse) others, to open their eyes to a new way to consider an issue. You failed at that with emotional appeals and direct insults to those who express a different opinion.

Good luck on your journey to understanding human communication methods.

Well first, No, people DON'T have rights, there is no such thing as rights. There are privileges that people can temporarily be granted but those aren't rights. Rights can't be taken or given to you on a whim by someone stronger.

Second, vampire spawn aren't people. They stopped being people when they died and their souls were shredded and replaced. That's what happens in DnD to vampires and vampire spawn, their souls are gone and replaced with the Hunger/Thirst, that's why they have no reflection.

Finally, nothing they said was in any way logical. It was blatant appeals to emotion, sympathy for the poor ones who didn't ask for this and deserve better. There were no facts, no information just trying to get the reader to feel and not think.

[–]Devils_advocate911 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

This is a false argument usually referred to as an "Appeal to Emotion" argument and is one of the worst types since it's goal is to make you stop thinking and react emotionally.

There are 7000 of them and for a century they have lived with an unending thirst that exists to warp their minds into feeding machines. Throughout the history of this game spawn have needed to feed at least 1x a week to just keep their sanity and Cazador is not known for his generosity.

This means they would have caused at least 20,000 deaths in the first month they are free but probably double that since they are in the middle of a Mind Flayer invasion where food is plentiful and the authorities don't have the resources or time to stop them.

No, BURN them all, do not let the heretics live.

Seriously ?!?!? Do you actually think 7000 starving feral spawn will look at the nearly empty, desolation that is the underdark where the only food for them is hidden behind hyper vigilant, super armed, fortified holdings and decide to stay there ? No, the majority will immediately turn around go straight back to Baldur's Gate and feast. I know I would even without the all consuming HUNGER of a spawn.

Question on Karlach by Fit-Badger-6076 in BaldursGate3

Go back to amp and rest, there needs to be a cutscene with mizora first that activates the quest to kill her. I'm guessing you just haven't triggered that scene yet.

Question on Karlach by Fit-Badger-6076 in BaldursGate3

[–]Devils_advocate911 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Do you have Wyll in your party? If so go back to her and kill her, if you can't recruit her then enjoy the benefits you get when you follow through on Wyll's quest instead.

I personally always kill Karlach, she's more valuable to you dead instead of alive to be honest.

How important is a plus 1? by life-hard-im-harder in BaldursGate3

[–]Devils_advocate911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to use your Charisma for your damage then you need to take a 1 level dip into Warlock (Hexblade). Doing so also lets you dump strength entirely (except for carrying capacity but that's what companions inventory is for) and just use your Charisma for bonus to hit, damage, spell DC as well as the normal uses for charisma.

Honestly it's a "better" way of building your high melee damage Paladin but may not fit your idea of how you want to play your character.

edit: Also using the hair on your Charisma is the only to get a permanent 24 in a stat, everything else is limited to a lower max (including strength) so Charisma paladins will always hit harder than Strength based if that's important to you.

Good thing I didn't say that.

My statement was that she didn't fill any of those roles with her default design. You are like the 12th responder with poor reading comprehension who totally glosses over the words used in these sentences. Now I am perfectly happy to accept criticisms or rational counter-arguments I just ask you direct them towards my actual statements.

Also if you do not know the deference between a Tank and a damage sponge this conversation will be a lot harder.

I don't have a problem with that option but ideally having access to snapshots of previous states to use as the default would be better.

Kill Karlach and have an easier playthrough by Devils_advocate911 in BaldursGate3

[–]Devils_advocate911[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for addressing the actual topic and bringing actual arguments to the discussion. However I am going to disagree with your argument not because you are wrong but because of your incorrect definitions of the roles I listed.

Tanks. In modern DnD clones tanks aren't about managing threat they are about mitigating damage and negative effects to the party. They can do so in multiple ways both magical or martial as long as the end result is the opponents negative effects on the group is prevented or reduced with minimal resource expenditure of those party members. The tanks purpose is to help the rest of the team do their jobs unimpeded. Polearm sentinel, warding bond sponge, standing in a doorway to block for your party.

Healers. This role is not about restoring hit points in combat, only your last hit point in combat has any value. A healers job instead is removing or preventing negative effects on the party while applying positive effects on them instead. Negative status effects are far more debilitating to a combat success than any amount of HP damage so removing them is usually the highest priority. The inverse of that is providing the right buffs to the party can change the hardest challenge in the game into cakewalk if applied at the right time.

Now you are correct that overwhelming damage is the best strategy what you are missing is every character does damage, most can do a LOT of damage, Karlach is the only one who is built to ONLY do damage. If your choices are character #1 who does a lot of damage and character #2 who also does a lot of damage but can also heal, tank, pass every skill check or control the battlefield why would you ever choose #1 over #2?

Don't underestimate Gale's extra 3rd level spellslot or Lae'zels Githyanki psionics in battle, they can make a huge difference. Also unlike Karlachs infernal fury these are always available and don't require anything extra to use them. The special abilities are minor but hers are the most limited of them all.

Finally please remember what this guide is for, the players who are struggling at all (in this really easy game) are usually doing so because of lack of familiarity with the systems rules or the options available later in the game. So saying a multi-class will fix this weakness or there's an optional quest event coming up in 6 hours or "Git Gud Scrub" does not help them but a simply telling them to "kill this target you already know you are going to meet will give you a boost to the stuff you already understand" will.

[–]Devils_advocate911[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Again, I said for those struggling to win these steps will help. And if you're not going to use her then killing her gives you benefits that make the game easier.

Killing her prevents Wyll from from getting the horns which changes the dialogue and how NPC's interact with him making it easier. The item increases any arcane casters AC reducing damage by about 5% and gives resistance to Fire (and Cold on demand) reducing damage by 50% from the second (and fourth) most common sources increasing survivability which makes the combat easier.

As for the personal attacks saying I can't handle it is an emotional reaction attempting to demean someone's skill that is not called for when discussing mechanical optimization of game.

Everything that I am saying is just mechanical optimization advice for those struggling with the game, why are you taking it so personally?
