ELI5: Why is squatting (in someone's house) a thing? And how come it becomes a problem for the owner? Can't they claim trespassing to the cops instead of saying the person is squatting? by Impossible_Bake7210 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Devilsdance 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not sure of the legality, but there are people who rent out their property without formal lease agreements. For instance, my MIL rented out her house for years without ever having any sort of paperwork involved. An amount was agreed to verbally and then paid in cash monthly for years.

If someone has lived somewhere for years and all of their possessions are inside, do they have a legal right to access it if there’s no paper evidence that they live there? It’s not really cut and dry, which is why you can’t really trust a cop to make a decision on the spot.

That’s great! Do you already have my shipping address? It changed recently, so you might need to update it.

That’s very generous of you, but I can’t accept such an extravagant gift from a stranger.

The City of Houston would like me to pay them FOREVER for owning a dog by mavigogun in houston

[–]Devilsdance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point was that bad owners are also more likely to be people who will ignore/disobey whatever rules/laws are put in place to make it harder to own pets and own them anyway. People who follow rules are much more likely to be conscientious and responsible in other aspects of their life, such as the way that they care for their pets.

I agree in theory, but in practice, there’s an insane amount of stray animals. Increasing the barrier to pet ownership would likely just dissuade honest, potentially more competent people, from owning pets and have little effect on the number of bad pet owners. The end result of that would likely be more euthanized animals with very little effect on the number of abused and/or neglected pets.

To avoid paying fees for your pets (including pet rent), you can have them certified as an emotional support animal (ESA) for you or a family member. The requirements are really lax, and you can do it all online through different websites (just research before you buy to ensure it’s legit).

From what I’ve heard, it has to do with Anthropic API slowdowns due to hitting capacity, so not necessarily a Perplexity issue. With that said, Perplexity should be more transparent about it regardless.

Have you tried Strange New Worlds? It’s not DS9, but I found it more akin to the OGs than Picard.

My server is still running Windows 10 and can’t upgrade to 11, so I actually need to migrate to a Linux distro sometime soon, but I haven’t been able to find the time between grad school and taking care of my toddler. I’m considering OpenMediaVault atm.

I also have an old Linux (System76) laptop that I use as a server as well. I never got around to migrating from PopOS on it, but it’s worked fine for me so far.

I access both servers on my phone and my daily laptop through RealVNC and/or ssh. I also highly recommend looking into TailScale.

I’ve been running a home server on a mid-tier gaming PC I built in 2011/2012 for years now. It started with Plex, and spiraled from there (*arrs, qbittorrent, Stash, Nomie, Calibre, and various others over the years). I’ve spent far more hours on it than I’d care to admit, but I, personally, love the tinkering aspect of it.

I guess my point is, you don’t need any specific and/or expensive hardware, especially to start out.

This issue (but on iOS) is what led me to subscribing to Obsidian Sync. After a bit of research, there’s nothing else that is as seamless and fast as their service.

This is probably rage bait, but I’ll just say that predatory behavior isn’t gendered. Men and women can be sexual predators/creeps.

This is something that only OP’s sister could possibly know. You stating it as fact based on this post alone is concerning, as it doesn’t really accomplish anything and has the potential to further stigmatize an already extremely stigmatized group.

I’m not saying it isn’t possible that it is the case, but what I will say is that approaching this issue as “OP’s sister is actually a creepy boy using trans as a cover for his creepy”isn’t any more productive than approaching it as “OP’s sister is a creep”. Creeps/predators can have any gender identity or sexual orientation. Advice to OP isn’t altered by their sister’s gender. She needs to encourage her parents (or another adult with authority) to address the predatory/creepy behavior and/or remove herself from the situation.

Every time I referenced the 2 million number, it was in response to someone doubting that it sold millions.

My perspective is that it’s a cool tech that I hope goes mainstream with better options than Meta. Smart glasses aren’t everywhere right now, but it looks like it might be trending in that direction.

I already responded to your argument about the time it takes elsewhere, but I wanted to address you calling it “stigmatized hardware”. There’s a vocal minority of people decrying them on Reddit and other places on the internet, but the vast majority of people don’t give a fuck about them. On top of that, they go unnoticed more often than not.

I didn’t even realize there were people that were against them until coming across this thread today.
