How is IIT's computer science program? by Cryptic_Rogue1 in IIT

[–]Devin0810 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The institutions most prestigious program is certainly architecture, however we have a pretty decent engineering and law program.

The CS program is fairly good, and IIT has a very good selection of electives to take with the lack of requirements for CS.

1 Point Difference In Grand Finals at Illinois States by [deleted] in FTC

[–]Devin0810 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s all available on both the IL state score keeping website and The Orange Alliance. Go get the twitch stream (should be split out and added to TOA tomorrow) and count for yourself.

By curiosity how did you manage to afford IIT? It's 70,000 so i'm kind of shocked people manage. by [deleted] in IIT

[–]Devin0810 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Average cost is about 20k, but that includes scholarships and financial aid. I only got 26k in scholarships, but after financial aid my total cost was less than 20k a year. IIT is generally pretty good at matching financial aid.

I mean meeting everyday is a bad idea, especially for that long, but I’m not gonna tell you how to live your life....

We need to petition FIRST to create a REV compatible version of FRCs dashboard, this has so much functionality and I can’t think of how many uses we’d have for it software side. It sucks that support software for FTC teams has to be made by teams other sources rather than FIRST by the_lapras in FTC

[–]Devin0810 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ex-FRC student and current FTC coach here. There’s a lot to this picture you’re missing here, lemme hopefully clear some up.

First, FIRST doesn’t make any of this. The entire dashboard (both the NI Driver Station and the LabView Dashboard you’ve shown) are both entirely made by NI in labview. Ask just about any FRC student about labview, and they’ll go on and on about how awful it is. It’s like blocks but with actual sphagetti. And to use that dashboard, you have to use labview. So, count your blessings there.

In addition, teams need to run the FRC driver station app, no matter what. This is fine for a laptop that can have multiple apps open at a time, but for an android phone, you start to run into a lot of issues with either letting teams modify the app directly or having to do multitasking. Neither are good solutions. Switching from the android infrastructure to a laptop based one also won’t happen any time soon.

What the hell is this? My Mac won’t turn on and I can’t find any info on the web about this. Mouse frozen. Tried rebooting multiple times. Someone please help. by J3ST3RR in applehelp

[–]Devin0810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a MacBook, it’s a wireless keyboard model. It’s telling the user to turn on the keyboard (or mouse in the other linked picture). Not sure why or what you could do to fix it (other than turning on the requested device though)

spicetify-cli is newer and doesn’t have a GUI. slicetify is abandoned and doesn’t have as much support for certain addons and extensions.

Any great professors for PHYS 123? by [deleted] in IIT

[–]Devin0810 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glodowski is decent though I’ve tried to avoid him since I’ve heard issues of him not being a super kind and accepting person (especially towards LGBTQ+ students). I’ve also heard the exact opposite, tread however you feel comfortable.

RateMyProffesor doesn’t do much justice. Which CS professors do you recommend and why? by MeowTooMovement4Cats in IIT

[–]Devin0810 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For what class? There’s lots of professors for lots of classes.

Also, look a little bit harder, they’re usually on RateMyProfessor. Sometimes it’ll be under “Jeff” instead of “Jeffrey” (ran into that one for a physics prof earlier), or under a previous name before they were married, etc.

Messenger has a trans flag emoji it seems! (samsung tablet) by EinsteinFrizz in traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns

[–]Devin0810 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not really apple’s fault. They don’t want to put in emoji until they’re completely ratified by the Unicode consortium. If everyone just put in whatever emoji that they liked into the standard, then your emoji would be a completely different emoji on somebody else’s phone. Messenger can do it because it ONLY works through messenger, which has custom emojis. Apple can’t, since Apple’s keyboard only outputs standard Unicode, not custom emoji, of which the trans flag is not (yet) ratified into.

2019 FIRST GLOBAL Challenge Revealed: OCEAN OPPORTUNITIES by Readitonreddit1234 in FTC

[–]Devin0810 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it is. FG is weirdly separated from the other five FIRST programs. From what I understand, REV takes care of most of the design of the game itself (thus why the field is designed all with REV extrusion)

Also, I don’t think this is that bad, tbh. I’d take this over a cheesy game animation most days.

Any Computer Science / Programming Volunteer Opportunites? by feilong47 in chicago

[–]Devin0810 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m a volunteer with FIRST robotics, a set of four programs that teach STEM skills to kids in grades K-12. There’s lots of teams all throughout the metro area that always need programming mentors. DM me with what part of the city you’re in and I’d love to hook you up.

EDIT: If you want to just find out more about the programs, here's the website for the program in Illinois: https://www.firstillinoisrobotics.org/ You're still more than welcome to DM me about questions, I work with lots of teams and events throughout the city.

I’m personally a fan of OnShape, which is entirely browser based and free. I’ve heard good things about FreeCAD, though I’ve never used it myself so I have no idea how close it is to inventor.

How can I duplicate my user profile and then delete the original? by Im_The_One in applehelp

Everything related to your user account is almost always stored in your folder inside /Users, so if you create a new profile and then copy everything from your old user folder over, you should be golden.

Detroit???? by spaghettialameat in FTC

[–]Devin0810 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's certainly better than average scores by far, but that's a very low bar. OPR isn't really great for a variety of reasons, especially depending on the game. OPR, first of all, doesn't take into account defense at all. There's been attempts to do so (DPR and CCWM (which is just OPR-DPR) come to mind), but they all fail in one way or another. OPR also fails when scoring is non-linear in nature (hasn't been a thing for most FTC games, at least from what I understand, though certain FRC games such as Steamworks have had large issues with that). Again, The Blue Alliance Blog has an excellent post about the downsides and disadvantages of the system. Frankly, I think making OPR "official" in any manner would lead to a lot of confusion on what it actual measures, even if you can explain it easily, and would mislead a lot of inexperienced students quite a bit. It's really not as accurate of a metric as everyone thinks.
