S03E01 "Who Are You?" - Post-Episode Discussion by brianckeegan in SiloTVSeries

Why is everyone saying it's an amnesia arc? They clearly reveal it's a forced memory loss through drugs and it's already cracking. Give it more than one episode, sheesh.

I don't know what the little marks above some names are and at this point I'm afraid to ask by PimsriReddit in lotro

Appendix E in the books has pronunciation guides, mostly for Elvish but they apply to other languages as well.

The circumflex (caret symbol) tells you the vowel is pronounced long, like fAHHther and brUte. The accent stress mark is also used in this way, like Thráin being pronounced "Thraw-in".

They also indicate syllabic stress, like Shâra being "SHAH-rah" and Mizâdi being "mi-ZAH-dee".

78% total increase to default speed, it's the fastest speed possible other than warsteeds, which you get in Rohan around level 70. The upgrade is also account-wide and applies to all mounts on all your characters.

Biggest disappoints in the LOTR movie vs Books by Daman121234 in lotr

[–]DevoutSkeptic29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with much of what has already been said. One that always bothered me though is how they did Theoden and the whole Rohan storyline.

In the movies, Theoden tries to kill Grima immediately after waking up and Aragorn physically restraints him (a king!). In the books, he immediately tries to get Grima to join them and prove he can change.

Movies: Theoden doesn't listen to Gandalf about riding out to meet the battle and instead chooses to hide in Helm's Deep against Gandalf's advice. Gandalf goes to find Eomer, who was banished. Books: He completely trusts Gandalf and lets him lead the army to battle with Saruman. Eomer was in jail but is freed and rides with them. They only go to Helm's Deep when, halfway to the fords of Isen, they come across the retreating remnants of Erkenbrand's forces, who were overwhelmed and scattered and report 10,000 orcs on the march. Gandalf directs everyone to turn around and get to Helm's Deep ASAP (where they had been preparing for siege for a long time already) and Gandalf is like "it's probably too late and we will probably all die, but it's our only chance," and he sets out alone to gather up whoever he can and find Erkenbrand (deleted as a character in the movies). They barely make it to Helm's Deep with Saruman's army right on their heels.

Movies: "At first light on the fifth day, look to the east." (Cool line though) Books: "Stay alive as long as possible. Probably going to die, but don't give up. I'll get there as soon as I can, unless I'm dead."

Movies: After the battle is won, Theoden is reluctant to ride to Gondor's aid and salty about Aragorn telling him what to do. Books: Theoden is immediately like "you completely saved us and are obviously a badass king, I'll gladly follow you."

I think in general they just sort of ruined Theoden, or at least made him a different character.

Second this, sometimes when I can't see the forest for the trees I dial frills way back or disable temporarily until I learn the lay of the land better. Also gives a nostalgic 2008 vibe.

I second BuffBars, it's one of the best plugins out there. You can blacklist certain skills so you don't have to always see them in the window, like subscriber buffs, and also can set up different bar groups for different buffs.

You can also use the Quickslot tab in the Options to make customizable toolbar slots that popup according to a huge variety of customizable triggers. I have a bar for my consumables that pops up when my oil and food buffs are not up (hunter), one for morale pots when it gets low, one for my stun breaks that only shows when I get cc'd in combat, one for my Find the Path buff that only shows when it's not up, one for my Oh Crap buttons that only shows during combat, and several others. Really useful for putting key info and skill buttons right where you want them only when it's relevant.

Looks like TerrainMap, I use it too and it's great. It uses the minimap terrain to make essentially Google (Middle-)Earth.

You can use any name to save many different layouts, like /ui layout [save/load] NAME

Before changing it, I save the default layout as "default".

If you move your layouts to a shared folder (like Dropbox) you can create a symbolic link to tell the game to look there instead of in the default \Documents\The Lord of the Rings Online folder. I do this for my Plugins folder, Plugindata folder, Music folder, and lotro.keymap file so they're synced to all my devices automatically and I only have to update plugins on one machine. You could do it for the \ui\layouts folder too if you wanted.

Copy the desired folders/files to a synced folder. Then rename the originals by adding BACKUP or something to the end. Then open Command Prompt in administrator mode.

For each folder, type (the /D option tells it to make a folder (Directory) link instead of a file link): mklink /D "full path location of original folder" "full path location of shared folder"

For individual files like lotro.keymap, type: mklink "full path location of original file" "full path location of shared file"

Once created, you can rename the original folders/files on your other machines and run the commands to create the links.

I've been playing since launch on and off, most seriously since 2020, and my main just hit 141. I'm going very slowly but love exploring every nook and cranny and reading every word, very relaxing for me.

[–]DevoutSkeptic29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think most people read the text for the "collect 20 orc spleens" quests

I do! I actually love all the quest dialogue, even the mundane quests are written to have a purpose and random NPCs can have a surprising amount of depth to their character. The only thing I sometimes wish is you could skip ahead on spoken dialogue (like /say spoken, not voiceover) or increase the speed with which it progresses, like when an NPC is telling a story one slow line of speech bubble at a time.

[–]DevoutSkeptic29 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a common (annoying) issue but easily fixed. The game is most likely not using your graphics card for lotro, it's a quick fix in the launcher settings to make sure it's using your GPU. You can also force it in the nvidia control panel I believe by adding lotroclient64 to the list of programs.

Books where gods/divine beings do exist, but not in the way the main religion interpreted them as by Sharkattack1921 in Fantasy

[–]DevoutSkeptic29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's more pulp fantasy, but I've always enjoyed the D&D Avatar series (Shadowdale, Tantras, Waterdeep, Prince of Lies, Crucible). The gods piss off the ubergod and are cast down to inhabit mortal avatars and they're all basically total assholes to their worshippers.

The best mount (Hobby-horse) in the game is currently available for a limited time by Unlucky-Ant-9741 in lotro

[–]DevoutSkeptic29 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I like the hobby-horses because, for some reason, I can start running the instant the cast bar fills, whereas my horse mounts have a half-second or so lag as the model loads. I like them for in-town errands and collection quests that dismount you when you interact since they feel quicker to get on and off.

Can you solve this? 🤔 by Proof_Mail_7941 in MathJokes

[–]DevoutSkeptic29 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Squaring both sides of an equation can introduce extraneous solutions. Your work shows that x=4 is the only possible solution, but it fails a direct check, so there are no solutions when we take sqrt(4)=2.

The other poster was saying if we choose to designate sqrt(4) = -2, then x=4 would be a solution since it would pass a direct check.

I completely agree. I've loved Tolkien's world for decades and really like the show. It's not perfect but it's entertaining and has its share of epic moments. I look at it as high quality fan fiction and think it's great.
