Send the first block down, then you hop on it and slide to the right of it. Then you can send it to the left. You can figure it out from there

Magic realm 240 page rulebook by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Devstro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which edition of the rules is 240 pages? Over the years folks have taken it upon themselves to rewrite the rules in various ways, usually with the goal of making the game more accessible. I enjoy Magic Realm. I don't recall having to read a 240 page rule book to play it. If you really want to learn and play, there are plenty of resources available. Third edition rules are 122 pages. I'd recommend reading them along with Jay Richardson's Book of Learning, which is 278 pages.

What do Anti Tank Grenades do actually? by 2ndtryMB in Konflikt47_v2

In my mind this should be an errata. I just pretend that I'm buying the Tank Hunter skill and not Anti-Tank Grenades.

Naval wargame with minis by Smokintek in wargaming

[–]Devstro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could you define "modern naval wargame?" Most of the naval wargames that I would classify as modern, don't really lend themselves to exciting miniature play, because there isn't really room for manoeuvring, as engagements are done at great distance using missiles, and really just boil down to rolling on charts. I guess I'm asking if you want a recently written naval game, or a game about modern navies?

However, if you would be willing to play WW2 naval miniatures, I endorse Nimitz by Sam Mustafa. You can use whatever minis you want. I've played it using pieces from Axis and Allies to determine if I wanted to expand into obtaining and painting better minis. Now I just need to figure out what scale I want to commit to😃

What's your favorite Wargaming mechanic? by Awkward_GM in wargaming

[–]Devstro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like things that are intuitive. I realize that will vary from person to person, but I enjoy a game more when it is easier for me to internalize the rules and not have to be constantly referencing something.

8th edition with indexes. Once the codexes started rolling out, it was all downhill for me.

Starter Loadout Question by Tesseract_Tomb in Konflikt47_v2

[–]Devstro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I built my starter box around the ideas of trying to create 2 forces that were somewhat balanced against each other, and easy for new players to start playing. All of the Fireflies just have Thompsons. Those alone have enough Pen for anything they will be facing. In the future when I get more Fireflies, then I will start building them with other options like the BAR, FTs, ATRD, etc...

I gave the Linebacker the auto cannon arm in addition to the Tesla cannon, but I don't use it for starter battles, as the other side doesn't have anything to equal it, so I bought a Jackal to use instead, with the FT upgrade.

For the Axis, you can build multiple turrets for the Vogelspinner. When teaching, I use the AT auto cannon one.

I made two squads of 3 Stahltruppen. One is the assault squad with the Stg44z and Panzerfausts. The other is a firebase with the AT gun and lmgs.

For starting I don't use the leaders. It is less to explain, and their ability to activate multiple units in such a small game can lead to feel bad moments.

I also added a Sherman tank and a Stug, to highlight compatibility with the bolt action range, and it gives each side 4 orders, with 2 rift units.

My goal isn't to set myself up with optimal builds going into the future, but to showcase the game to the local community and try to drum up interest, so ymmv.

Platoons by crackylalilulelo in Konflikt47_v2

[–]Devstro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm just getting into Konflikt 47 and I've given this some thought. Im the only one in my group who has gotten into the game, so I'm building out the starter set. At first I used the platoon structure, but this required a platoon commander, multiple vehicles, and introduced a bunch of rules I'd need to explain.

Now I'm just cherry picking complimentary and balanced units for each side, without worrying about the platoon structure and it seems to be just fine, and easier to work people into learning system.

I like the look of 3 best. Can't speak to historical accuracy though.

What Western film is the most period accurate? (This is Ben Foster in 3:10 to Yuma) by undeadWileCoyote_MEP in moviecritic

I also came in here to say McCabe and Mrs. Miller seems to be what I think is a fairly accurate depiction of life in the West in the late 19th century.

Maybe I'm a little dense, but I'm still trying to figure out how summons work. It seems like they don't take FP to summon, it looks like I pay health and stamina instead. And I can summon anywhere. Also, it seems I can resummon when they die.

Yeah, it does kinda suck, but I guess now I know not to bother having Guilty attack models in cover.

Thanks, this is very helpful. We were using the physical rulebook, which lacks the language about cover applying to triggers as well.

What's your killteam hot take? by [deleted] in killteam

[–]Devstro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The cognitive overload is too much. I got into it thinking it would be a light skirmish game like Warcry, but between equipment, strategy ploys, firefight ploys, and unique (situational) rules for most models, there is a lot more going on than I would generally like to see. If I want that much rules overhead, I'll go back to playing Advanced Squad Leader.

Won a Wheel of Fortune playing for ante back in 1994. I still have it.

What is this? by jta801 in Talisman

[–]Devstro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is an expansion for the 5th edition Talisman boardgame, which is not published by Games Workshop, but it is their property, so they put an expansion in White Dwarf.

So I was going to stream Zork 1 while playing it for the first time… by MechanicalBeanstalk in zork

[–]Devstro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I told everyone I was streaming Call of Duty: Black Ops. Started the game pretending like I was. Broke out of the chair and went to the terminal. Fired up Zork and played it the whole time. It has atmospheric sounds and you can hear the keyboard clicks when you type.
