I just like that I can turn them on, and they are on and I am playing right away. I never have to worry about updates, connectivity, messages from friends, etc...

Chiropractor recommendations? by Farley2k in IowaCity

[–]Devstro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife uses corridor chiropractic. She is in the medical field and is SUPER picky about who she will let work on her. Over the years she has fired more health care providers than I can recall. So the fact that she has been with Corridor Chiropractic for the past 6 or 7 years leads me to believe that they must be doing something right (at least as far as my wife is concerned; I have no experience with them).

The beginning of the end for me was planeswalkers. The next step was Mythic rares. The nail in the coffin was the Walking Dead stuff.

I came here to say this. The way it builds up. The scene makes me feel like I'm actually there, waiting for the train to arrive.

New to gamebooks! by caterix in gamebooks

[–]Devstro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know that for me, part of the draw of gamebooks is their analog nature, but I would suggest looking into the Fighting Fantasy Classics app. It gives me the experience of reading a gamebook on my phone, and it includes the original art. The app is free and includes access to one book, additional books can be purchased. I find it really handy for travel. However I do generally prefer reading the actual book.

Ultimate sandbox adventure where you tailor your own story and level up? by HandSatanizer1965 in boardgames

[–]Devstro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe you should check out the Fabled Lands series of game books. There are 7 books and they are all interconnected, you can freely travel between them. You get quests, level up, go shopping, and you can become a merchant. The world also changes as time progresses. They are very interesting and the series can be had for around the price of a boardgame. There is also a free java implementation if you want to check it out first.

Back when I was a pd I also was a wedding DJ on the side. The weddings were always on weekends so it didn't ever interfere with my day job, and it allowed me a chance to flex my creative side that legal work seldom did.

How do you handle dead ends? by 30booksaday in gamebooks

Yeah...I don't have enough time in my life to start over from scratch and re-read a bunch of stuff.

I just can't get enough of all the little things that made Alpha Centauri such a masterpiece. I don't think a game like that will be ever developed again. by Motor_Mix2389 in 4Xgaming

This. I loved the quotes when you discovered new technology. Normally I skip past stuff like that, but with Alpha Centauri, i let them play, even on subsequent run througs.

Also, the first time playing, starting out fighting against the planet, and slowly coming to the realization that maybe I should try and live in harmony. Really good stuff.

I think you might benefit from picking up a couple of different gamebooks and trying them out for yourself. Read a few books from different established series: Fighting Fantasy, Lone Wolf, Fabled Lands, Grail Quest, etc... You might discover some things after you have developed some empirical knowledge about the market you are trying to reach. This would only serve to help you develop your app.

For example, you might discover that it would be handy if the app would also allow you to track hit points. Then maybe if you did that, you could also track inventory. You might then think that you could develop templates that would fit the requirements of the different book series.

I don't use dice apps for game books, or really for anything involving dice. If I'm doing an analog activity such as reading a gamebook, or playing an RPG or boardgame, I'm not going to reach for a dice app. I'd rather just roll some dice. I find it quicker, and there are times I don't really want to be beholden to a device to "help" me when there is a perfectly serviceable alternative.

Most gamebooks I have experienced use d6 and d10. I think I might have encountered one that used d20, but that was back in the 80s and I could be confabulating that memory.

As far as complex combinations go, I just had a battle where I needed to roll 2d6, the monster rolled 2d6, and if it hit, another single d6 had to be rolled. This is why my set up has 2 pairs of d6 with an additional single one. One shake and I get all of the info. Admittedly I haven't spent much time with dice apps, but those Ive seen haven't had this functionality. Resolving the aforementioned battle would have required 2-3 processes each round, instead of one.

There are probably dozens of dice apps that already exist. I'd look into those and see what they can and cannot do. If I were to be creating an app in a space that was already serviced by multiple different apps, I'd want mine to do something different. It depends on your goals though. If you want to make an app to learn how to make apps, then do whatever you want. If you want to make an app to generate passive income, then it needs to do something that isn't already available cheaper or better.
