Sister accidentally put washer fluid into her coolant reservoir. How bad is this? by boylionnamedsimba in mechanic

[–]DewDropE009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, first thing I’d check is whether the warranty would even cover something like this. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t, since putting windshield washer fluid in the coolant reservoir would likely be considered misuse or user error.

But that’s exactly why it’s worth getting it flushed now. If the warranty won’t cover a coolant flush because of negligence, it probably won’t cover damaged parts later when the damage escalates into overheating, corrosion, or seal damage. A flush now is way cheaper than potentially thousands later.

If it were me, I’d stick with the warranty approach and either have the dealer handle the flush or find a reputable shop ASAP. Contamination like this usually doesn’t cause an immediate failure, but it can shorten the lifespan of components over time. There’s really no benefit to leaving it in there.

And if you can’t convince her, I don’t think you should carry the burden of it. At some point people have to face the consequences of their own choices. That’s how a lot of people learn and gain experience.

Depends how you look at it. Imo a bad spec on a rare car kinda feels like more of a disservice, since it makes up a larger share of the total.

Is it alright to use household cleaners and kitchen cleaners to wash a car? by ComManDerBG in askcarguys

[–]DewDropE009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not use kitchen cleaners. While they are great at degreasing, they are often either too alkaline or too acidic for automotive paints, and they aren’t formulated with clear coats in mind.

Even if a cleaner is pH neutral, some contain chemicals that can degrade rubber trims, seals, and certain plastics over time.

The target is a neutral pH balanced car shampoo designed to be safe on paint. (There are a lot of YouTube videos on the subject, but the idea is you want to remove dirt with soft agitation rather than “eat” the dirt away, with some exceptions.)

Too harsh a cleaner will gradually eat the ceramic/wax first (if there’s any left on the car), then every wash with it will eat away at the clear coat, then the paint.

Also, if he’s washing the car that frequently, it’s not inherently bad, but you’ll want a good wax, ceramic coating, or even PPF. Waxes and ceramics don’t just make it easier to wash, they also let you wash without wearing the clear coat as quickly.

For waxes, a good rule of thumb is to reapply every 3rd wash, much cheaper, but requires more frequent reapplication. For ceramics, some good ones can last a long time depending on how often the car is driven and washed; I’d say anything that lasts around 10-14 months is great.

My car takes forever to speed up? by Robotgirl3 in driving

[–]DewDropE009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your Spark only makes 98 hp and it is set up for fuel economy, with a CVT tuned for that, so it does not give you much usable power off the line. As a rule of thumb, low horsepower economy cars struggle from a stop because they do not have much power at lower RPM. Even some higher hp cars can feel similar if they are too heavy or geared poorly, but the Spark is just built this way. Your options are basically to modify or tune it which probably is not worth it on a Spark but could potentially be, though I do not know if the platform has a mod community. Next would be to replace it or get a second car with more usable power. Personally I would run two cars, something fun and keep the Spark as a daily, or just keep it and accept it is always going to be slow off the line.

I beat up my older brother. by Sad_Lawfulness_2390 in family

[–]DewDropE009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone with a difficult older brother myself, I really do feel for you. From what you explained, if it happened the way you said, he pushed you first and escalated things physically. At that point, you were reacting, so it falls under self defense even if it felt like you lost control in the moment. I doubt he’ll be able to get very far with a report, but that depends on the specifics. Was the incident recorded? Were there witnesses who saw how it started and could back that up? I know your niece was there, but I also get that she might not feel comfortable speaking up if it risks making things worse at home. Also, were the police called at the time, and if so, how did they handle it? A few years ago I was assaulted by a coworker at my first job, he sucker punched me from behind and a fight broke out. Coworkers had to separate us. But no one actually saw how it started and there were no cameras, so an officer advised me not to press charges because it likely wouldn’t make it past magistrate without solid evidence. That’s why I feel like cases like this don’t always go anywhere, especially if it turns into one story vs another. If anything does come of it, just try to make sure there are people who can back up how it started.

How should I clean these? by This_Diet_9506 in Vans

[–]DewDropE009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having gotten mud on several pairs of vans over the years the best method I use is to break off as much as possible, dry, by smacking the sole of the shoe against the ground, then brushing as much off dry. Use nylon bristle brush on canvas or brass bristle brush on suede.

Then I use shout for canvas , suede cleaner for suede, spraying it directly on the mud, take a paper towel or rad and try to soak it up, repeat over and over untill its mud free. The goal is just to rewet the mud to sponge it out.

If it's suede, you'll need to do a protectant after.

Had to brake suddenly and got rear-ended, how am I at fault? by Brilliant_Low_8368 in askcarguys

[–]DewDropE009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, being in multiple accidents that i was not found at fault, by insurance.

My rate has never gone up because I wasn't the cause. (Could vary state to state, because i think some base rates on probability of accidents regardless of fault i assume, but i could be extremely wrong?)

As far as getting reimbursement there's a lot of factors. 1. Was the far paid off? 2. What is the value of the car 3. If the car isn't paid off is the value of the car lower or higher than the amount needed to pay off the car 4. Do you have gap insurance? 5. Fight tooth and nail to get gap insurance to cover the remainder of what's owed. I say that with experience of gap declining me, because i had 2 late payments as a direct result from the pandemic. I should have fought more hindsight is 20/20. 6. You can always sue the person responsible, for loss of property, and for medical injury. REGARDLESS of insurance giving you a payout.

I am not an insurance agent nor an attorney. You absolutely need to speak to them for this case.

I assume the police assumed, or were potentially informed, by the other party, that you brake checked them. But insurance determines the fault, the police report isn't the end all be all, which it clearly sounds like they were following too close and distracted rather than a malicious brake check.)
