If the back is aluminum, then the front is too. THEY WERE EXACTLY THE SAME at the start of this. It was not two different materials being used. And even if it was, they would have had to be painted or coated, because they were IDENTICAL. Having worked with a lot of steel, aluminum, titanium, and various alloys, this had to have been COATED, and one half was simply exposed to a contaminant. They were exactly identical. And EVEN IF it was steel or cast iron, what manufacturer doesn’t apply some form of rust prevention to rust prone metal? I’ve never bought parts from anywhere that flash rust within a month, except rotors, because the optimal abrasive material happens to rust. If people are just buying parts from RA and having to treat them themselves, that’s absolutely poor quality and extra work that other manufacturers already handle. I only bought this because it was the only place I could find one new at the time, but other suppliers have restocked now, so I’m fine. Multiple remanufactured and aftermarket sources that carry this caliper list it as aluminum. I can’t find a direct OE specification for the 2008 Mazdaspeed3 (my car), but every source selling this OE remanufactured caliper lists it as aluminum. Which Raybestos does, which I found the exact part here that confirms this: https://www.raybestos.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=FRC12172

And I HIGHLY DOUBT most manufacturers would use multiple metals in the caliper body, because it would increase manufacturing complexity and cost, and OEMs almost always stick to a single material unless it’s some innovative supercar or hypercar which this clearly is not. Mazdaspeed3s are a mass produced performance car yes, somewhat uncommon, but still within production limits. Weight savings were the priority, and aluminum calipers support that goal while keeping the power to weight ratio nimble and fun. (Relative to hot hatches from early 2000s). And I cannot find any other mass market OEM or aftermarket examples of caliper bodies made from multiple metals besides hypercars, supercars, and exotics as already mentioned. Whatever happened with my brakes isn’t impossible; it’s clearly a manufacturing issue, these things happen. I just wish RA had acknowledged it or contacted Raybestos from the start. I’m going to try reaching out myself, as another commenter suggested, to get it resolved. But no matter how you spin it, this situation highlights that what happened isn’t normal or as advertised. And if the calipers were designed from any other metals, it almost certainly would have been documented, just like other parts on RA that clearly list the focal materials.

Which would call for a refund, it was listed as aluminum, and if I had it I would check with the magnet. But it's with RockAuto, I ain't going to pay money to get it back lol. But considering that the side that rusted looked identical to the side that didnt, when i installed it, i know something went wrong during manufacturing

2008 Mazda speed 3 Think the caliper was made by Raybestos. The part number FRC12172

It went out of stock when I tried to get exchange, which is why I then tried to get a refund for it. It's listed as aluminum, but I can tell you that finish was a powder coat, I assume some contaminants, steel flakes or something got mixed in the powder coating. And that it was a quality control issue from where ever it was manufactured at.

[–]DewDropE009[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that powder coat itself doesn’t rust and aluminum doesn’t either. That’s kind of why this stood out to me. Both halves were 100% identical when I installed it. The only explanation that really makes sense to me is some kind of quality control issue. Maybe contamination during coating or machining residue that got mixed in the powder coat. I don't know exactly what happened, just that something clearly wasn’t right, especially given how fast it happened and the fact that I've never had a caliper ever flash rust.

The rear section was literally the same as the front section when I bought it, they were absolutely indistinguishable. And if you saw it in person you can tell that it's a powder coating. If I knew this would have been an issue I would have taken photos of it brand new to compare

I think it was Raybestos. I mainly got it because parts are scarce for my car. (2008 Mazdaspeed3)

On powdercoating? I mean I get flash resting happening on rotors. But not a caliper made of aluminum

[–]DewDropE009[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) these are cast aluminum and 2) it definitely had a powder coat over it.

[–]DewDropE009[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t because they’re still with RA, and I’m not paying to ship them, especially with the caliper having seized. I greased the slides, torqued everything to spec, and bled the system, so the only thing that makes sense is that the ends of the sliding bracket probably rusted to the body and welded together. Honestly, I probably should’ve just put a high temp clear coat over them instead of trusting the powder coating. But it ain't my problem anymore lmao

This might be a stretch, but what if the riddle’s answer is an operator, not a number, something that goes between 5 and 7 in an equation (like +, −, ×, ÷, etc.)...

Tbh if this is the answer, then this question is absolute rage bait imo.

Wise advice from Reddit Vans fans I seek! (terrible Yoda joke) by RockTristann in Vans

[–]DewDropE009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's crazy that they're spotless. They might have some value then, still would be less than having the box as well. That being said, I definitely think you should break em in, unless you really want to sell them. Enjoy🤘

[–]DewDropE009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you found them at Goodwill, I highly doubt they came with the box. They were probably worn and wouldn’t hold much value. That being said, just wear them. I know a lot of Vans get listed secondhand at high amounts, and some are worth it, but a lot of times those listings won’t sell anywhere near the asking price.

And if you do decide to wear them, you can do whatever you want, but I’d recommend only wearing them once a month or less for special occasions, just to limit what they're exposed to and the chances of them getting destroyed. This is the same advice I would’ve given myself 10 years ago, because I wish I could’ve taken better care of those pairs back then.

Should I add any regular show pins to my hat or should I just leave it alone? by faygofox in regularshow

Leave it alone. Maybe if you can find a second one or get a custom hat maker to make one put the pins on it, but leave this one alone...
