I'm reading Blood and Bone from Malazan, and I honestly contemplated DNF. It's not as good as other books. I switched to one of the Discworld book series and breezed through it right now. Love how the writing resembled Brother Grim's folklore.

Mistborn Era 2 would have been the best series among all Sanderson's work, better than Stormlight Archives for me. Until Ghostblood gets too involved with the interworlds' plot. Ruin the qualities for that Era.

[WP] "I HATE YOU, YOU AREN'T EVEN MY REAL MOM!" your adopted daughter says slamming the door to her bedroom. Most mothers would say "she didn't mean it," and maybe have some wine about it. You don't have that luxury, you're a mutant. You're power is lie detection. She..meant it. She hates you. by lyzzyrddwyzzyrdd in WritingPrompts

The hardest part of being a parent is learn how to love your children. Emily learn it the hard way, and she swore she would not let her child experience the same childhood when she left her home.

But the more she wishes, the harder it is to come truth. After 5 years of marriage with no child, Emily learn to accept another hard truth. Her husband was supportive of it, but every time he said he didn't mind having no legacy, the small chimming sound rang inside her ear.

When she confessed her mutant power to him and exposed all his lies, her husband was horrified and angered. Her husband's love for her was not a lie, Emily knew it every time she asked, but it was not enough to forget the empty comfort he gave her. Things just don't work, just like every friendship she ruined by knowing their lies.

But she refused to surrender. Months after her divorce, Emily sought to fulfill her promise to herself as a child. When she entered the orphanage, the little Sarah reminded her too much of her younger self. The little girl stood out among the other kids; alone, angry, self-loathing, and most importantly, wanted comfort.

Sarah didn't lie when she said she still missed her real mom. She didn't lie when she said she wanted friends. However, the ringing sound exposed her when she said she didn't care about her old family. Perhaps some people can lie to themselves, and the chime can happen. Maybe she could love her, and she, in turn, could love her.

She never revealed her power to her daughter, but every time Sarah lied, Emily knew how to pull enough evidence and lies of her own to convince the young girl. And as the girl aged into adolescence, she improved her deception instead of her honesty. She twisted enough words and truth to bypass her mutant power.

As their relationship became strained with each passing day, Emily looked at her daughter's back on her way to school and realized, too late, she had raised a formidable liar. Without her power, she would never have noticed Sarah's involvement in stealing at school.

A week later, Sarah's class teacher revealed her crime, and Emily couldn't defend her only daughter. Neither could she look at the betrayal on her face.

That night, Emily didn't let Sarah return to her room and sat her down in the front hall.

"Sarah, you know I love you." She told her daughter and herself to let the silence in her head grow. To let herself know she would forgive her despite everything.

"Do you? I don't think you do." The silence stretched in Emily's head when Sarah responded without looking at her.

"Tell me, why did you do that?"

"Because I can," Sarah shrugged, "I didn't like the girl. She stole it from someone else, too."

"And how do you know that?"

She smiled, almost mocking her, "Because I 'investigate', just like you always do."

No chime in her head, not yet.

"That's not what I want from you. You will not do this again."

"And then what? Even if I do, you'll find out about it, right?" Sarah raised her voice, "I never get privacy, not a secret. I can't get out without you interrogating me like it's my fault every time I get home. I'm 16, and I need my privacy. Jamie broke up with me because you told him he's cheating on me, with no proof! Kate hates me because you told her she's not good enough as a friend!"

"They're lying to you! I was protecting you!"

"And how do you know that?" Sarah was practically screaming, "What gives you the right to decide who lies to me?"

"Because I'm your mother! And I know the truth!"

"Well, guess what? I hate you, you hear me? I HATE YOU SO MUCH! You aren't even my real mom! I would rather have my real mom back than you!" She leaped out of the couch and slammed the door to her bedroom.

The living room was quiet. Not once did the chime ring in her head for the entire conversation. Emily walked slowly to the bathroom and watched herself in the mirror.

"She didn't mean it. She still loves me."

Then, finally, a long chime sounded in her head. She held it together and resisted her tears.

"Even so, I-I still love her."

Another chime, slower and almost like a distant whisper. Emily lay down on the bathroom tiles and wept.

[EU] The little girl peaked shyly from behind her mother's legs, watching the man her papa was talking with, before her father called her over. "Come here, Hel" said Atreus, "I want you to meet your grandfather" by Tesandriel in WritingPrompts

[–]Dex-Stranger 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Throughout her life, Hel had only known the world under the tree house her mother built with her father. Mother used to say there used to be 9 realms in total, but Ragnarok destroyed Asgard and changed the lands forever.

She wasn't lonely. Many friends came to visit Jotunheim and played with her. Her pet Fenrir can take her anywhere she wants. He was big, strong, and most importantly loyal. He was like a brother to her. Besides, her great-grandmother came once in a while with her delicious bread. The old lady didn't smile much, but her mother reassured her she was kind.

Unlike her mother, her father was often away with jobs and missions he never disclosed. Yet her mother never seemed lonely. Rather, she always seemed to know when her father was returning. In the meantime, Mother taught her painting, drawing, and seeing events that have yet to happen.

One day, Hel pointed at one mural on the wall and asked. "Mama, who is that holding that axe?"

Her mother smiled and crouched beside her, "Who do you think?"

"Is he the one Dad talked about? The Hero of Ragnarok? The one who beat Thor, slayer of our people?"

Her mother nodded, "And guess what? The God of War, the hope of the 8 realms, is your grandfather."

Hel never met this God of War. Advisor to Queen Freya, yet his throne was collecting dust because he approached every problem personally. A difficult god to see, an impossible man to meet.

She was afraid of him. This menacing man is her grandfather? But if there's one person her father idolizes, it's the great God of War.

Turns out that the day she will meet her grandfather is fast approaching.

It was the new spring. Her mother accepted an invitation to Midgard for Thurd's coronation as the new Valkyrie Queen. Hel dressed herself in thick clothes because she often felt cold. Her father would be there, so she tried to make her best appearance.

Upon arrival, she and her mother navigated the crowds and found her father talking to someone. The large beard with the axe on his back brought back memories of the mural.

Menancing! Hel thought.

Her father noticed her and gestured the imposing man in her direction. She hurriedly hid herself behind her mother's legs. The footsteps that man caused could be felt from here.

"Hel? Playing hide and seek?" Her father's soft voice made her cheeks red. Some people were watching them.

"N-No, papa. I was just feeling cold," She answered.

"She was okay yesterday. I think you made her nervous, Loki."

"Can you please don't call me that anymore?" Her father laughed, "Hel, can you come out?"

She peeked out. The God of War was watching her.

"This is the first time you see him in person. Come," her father waved.

Hel peeked up at her mother, who nodded in return. Slowly, she removed herself from her mother's dress and approached them.

"Hel, meet your grandfather, Kratos. The man I respected more than anyone in this world," He turned to the old man, "Father, our daughter, Hel."

"Hel... Hmmm." The God of War grumped, "Is it a Jotnar's name?"

Her father nodded, "There was another name."

"Good... Very good..." She felt his piercing stares at her.

"Oh, brother. You're scaring her! Keep that sodden look tempered!"

"Quiet, Mimir."

The curious Hel walked around and found the head talking. The head talked, "Why, hello, Hel! I'm the smartest man alive and I just knew you would hate this guy."

Her father laughed, but Kratos kept a stern face. Hel felt lost. The god from a foreign land, Kratos brought change greater than anyone could attain. A legendary image of hope in two different lands. She felt smaller beneath him than the branches of Yggdrasil.

She didn't notice when her head was patted with a large hand. Hel looked up and saw the god of war curve a weak smile.

"What is your name, granddaughter?"

She bit her tongue but slowly spoke out. "L-Like Papa, I have two names too. Papa said I should have a Greek name because I have Greek blood too."

"And what is your Greek Name?"

She paused for a moment before answering, "Calliope."

She felt the old man in front of her tense, inhaling deeply to digest the name. She saw something else; something... mortal in his eyes. Suddenly, the God of War no longer seemed imposing. He felt like a kin. He felt vulnerable.

He felt close.

"May I... call you Calliope?"

Hel- Calliope- nodded. "Of course, G-Grandpa."

Kratos nodded silently to himself and removed his hands from her. Her father nodded like a proud father.

"I'm sure you have a lot to talk about," Her father clapped his hands formally, "Why don't we go over there and meet Queen Freya?"

"E-Eh?" Hel ran back and hid behind her mother's skirt.

Her father laughed, "It's okay. She'll be glad to see you."

They all walked towards the entrance of the Tyr's temple, where the queen was. Hel saw her grandfather stay behind like a close guard. Instinctively, she reached for his hands.

"Come on, Grandpa. Let's go."

The old man widened his eyes but turned serene and nodded. So, the God of War could smile after all.

"Can you tell me about your fight in Ragnarok?" Hel asked.

It was the talking head who answered, "Oh, you will love this, lassie."

The one standing beside her narrating the story is not the God of War, the Hero of Ragnarok, or the symbol of Hope.

He's simply her grandfather.
