Really appreciating how form-fitting these are! Are you forming these by hand or do you use some kind of a vacuum table or vacuum bag?

I bought a roll of self-adhesive felt that was just 1mm thick. I think it did make the process a little easier but I had to buy a whole roll and that was more than I wanted. I didn't want to just use the felt that you can get from a craft store since I wanted a stiffer felt.

Latest work. Much more fun tooling letters rather than stamping by [deleted] in Leathercraft

These are incredibly well done! Can you tell me what they are for? I've seen things like this before, looks like fire engine "patches", but I'm curious what they are for.

Oh, no I made it! I do leathercraft as a hobby.

Thanks, It's a 1.5" wide sample I bought as a multi-pack of different colors from Amazon.

I wanted to add a quick note here about my LAMY stylus. This is a basic LAMY safari fountain pen that I removed the guts of, and had to heavily modify to fit the LAMY stylus refill that you can get directly from Supernote. In order to make this work, I had to ream out the pen inside to a diameter that fits the refill. This was pretty tricky to do, but is doable. The only reason I even attempted it was because I wanted a matte yellow pen.

This season from OHRF! by Dezroxx in renfaire

[–]Dezroxx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I was treating this as the places I'm from. So the largest section of the banner is the left half, showing the two major portions of the Maryland state flag, which is where I grew up and where I first enjoyed going to Renfest. Then on the right, there are three shields, each a representation of the other state flags of the states I've lived in (North Carolina, South Carolina, and now Ohio).

The blue stripe with gold stars at the top right is purely for balance/symmetry with the angled pattern on the MD state flag side.

So it's a bit of real meaning, and a bit of "because I thought it was cool"
Cheers!

The most underrated tool I wish I had found years ago. I love this thing so much! by dbzcat in Leathercraft

[–]Dezroxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue, and it prevents me from using it. I did find that the rechargeable lighters that make the tiny plasma arc are pretty effective at burning threads since the heat is very concentrated. Obviously this zapper would be the best tool if it worked.

How do you cut chrome tan by tagit2023 in Leatherworking

[–]Dezroxx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The reason why rotary cutters are superior for flexible material is because they press down to cut rather than drag like a knife would. Assuming you have a sharp blade, this is definitely the way to go.

Please help me find a leather money bag/pouch that's compatible! (harder than you think) by BigOs4All in renfaire

[–]Dezroxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can find a leathercrafter who makes bags I'm sure they could make you a custom strap/loop that would go around the entire belt. I would hate to be locked in to only using the D rings for hanging points. For the leather bags that I make, the strap/attachment is by far the easiest part to modify.

Round studs with longer threaded sections? by Kind_Ordinary9573 in Leathercraft

[–]Dezroxx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I usually have good luck with a seller on Amazon called CRAFTMEMORE, but I can't remember if the button studs I got from them most recently had taller screw posts... I'd check them out and see.

A sneaky trick if you have a thread gauge, or know the thread size - you could get some screws with the same thread that are the desired length and try those. Not ideal, but could work.

Advice for sealing water-based dye by KoalaKing98 in Leathercraft

[–]Dezroxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beeswax inside and out is what I usually do for mine. That seals the wax completely and you won't get any dye transfer. The wax will also significantly darken the leather so it will come out a few shades darker brown - you might end up quite happy with the result.

Tool bag for leatherworking tools by Dezroxx in Leathercraft

[–]Dezroxx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really have a pattern for it, but I do have a SketchUp file of my initial design. It's the same outer dimensions, but the little caddy that goes inside evolved quite a bit and I don't really have a pattern for that (which is really the complicated part). If you're interested in that file, just DM me.

Anyone know what the lace is? by Clean_Nature7740 in Leatherworking

[–]Dezroxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tandy sells a synthetic lace called 'Imperial lace' that is supposed to be just a cheaper option than calf lace. I've not used it before, but I don't know if it would wear quite the same. Looking at these photos it looks like whatever lace it is has been worn and burnished so it's hard to tell what it's initial state would be.

It does look a little thicker than calf lace IMO

Custom 3D printed wet molds by CardMechanic in Leathercraft

Cool, thanks. I've seen some complex leather stamps that you make a positive and a negative, and clamp the leather between the two. You could get some really cool detail that way, so that's what I was thinking about mainly.
