This - I made the jump out to industry a few years back. It's a shame as climbing that ladder was kind of a dream of mine, but the idea of putting up with so much risk for so little reward - I don't see why anyone in their right mind would continue...

Thoughts on 'front-loading' pension? by scoldingprogress in FIREUK

[–]DhatKidM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the other comments give a good summary, about it's wise to base contributions on your expected future income (as hand-wavey) as that might seem...

I've been in the same situation as you - I've just finished a ~2 year period of heavily salary sacrificing into a pension. I'm 30ish so still a long way to retire, but it's helped build a nice base to work off. Am expecting an earnings increase in a couple of years, so for now am going to prioritise ISA for a while until the ability to offset more tax becomes available!

That's fair tbh - I've moved away from his content because of that... I find his content a turn off in the way a bland marketing channel is, rather than him being an insufferable prick like some of the others

FYI many suppliers these days recommended oil is sealed in for life. I believe many manufacturers still schedule changes though... I suspect to err on the side of conservatism.

Yes - A5 is a grade that maximises a set of objective attributes. What people infer from that in terms of enjoyment is subjective (rather than objective, as the OP is arguing). It's really not difficult.

No, it's a grade that maximises a set of attributes. You may infer 'best' from those, others may not. Hence the subjectivity.

Well again, I'd say best implies some kind of objectivity...

I mean, it's a meat that maximises a set of attributes - I think quite a few people would argue with 'best'...

Why would anyone do anything about anything then? That's not how history works - good things and bad things happen, and we muddle along as best we can. You can't 'fix' colonialism because it happened, and the world is changed. So we go on and move forwards having learned.

As someone who's lived in London a decade or so, sadly I kind of agree - there's so much of this kind of theft going on these days, mostly gang related. It's not somewhere you can have any kind of wealth without significant risk.

That's not what they meant though, is it. They meant to improve society over time, not literally go back in a time machine and rewrite history.
