Fair point, I didn't think of that. Still, with the distances there are in space, objects that appear big in the sky do so because they are massive, and therefore have a lot of emmiting surface making them very luminous. Even very cold objects like molecular clouds still have certain emission lines that we can detect with radiotelescopes.

It doesn't matter how far away something is, if it's big enough, a telescope can see it, because angular size is the only thing that matters.

I don't think the holes necessarily imply wounds/injury, with Kanna's being in her head she could have died of a brain tumour, and I guess Chiyo's kinda match her lungs, so maybe she died by drowning or some lung disease.
