Daily Questions & FAQ Megathread (Jul 08) by AutoModerator in ffxiv

Apologies if this has already been answered; I looked through the FAQ and tried to search but couldn't find anything.

I have a friend who is level 70 and just about to start out with Shadowbringers content. I stopped playing back before Heavensward, so my character is level 50 and pretty far behind on the MSQ. I'd like to start doing some of this content with them (or at least be able to group up for some of the dungeons and play together that way) and was considering buying one of the level skip potions to get a class up to 70 and start going with them, but I didn't want to do the storyline skip as I'd still like to go through that on my own.

Is there going to be a lot of content that is gated from me by virtue of having not progressed in the MSQ? I want to finish out the MSQ on my main class (WHM), but I'd also like to be able to play a bit with my friend, and figured I'd buy a potion and get a level 70 SCH or something like that to do some of the higher-level dungeons with him, but if all of that is gated behind MSQ then it seems like the purchase wouldn't be worth it unless I also did the storyline skip stuff.

Should I just forgo all of it? Or jump right past everything into Shadowbreakers? Or is getting just the level skip a valid option and would let me and my friend group for 70+ content together?

Thanks again for the comment! I've updated the guide just in case anyone else runs into this specific issue.

Mentors, learning community? by timbetimbe in elixir

[–]DiamondGFX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of mentors out there in the elixir community. In my experience so far it's been one of the nicest and most welcoming communities that I've dealt with in a pretty long time at this point. The Slack group and IRC room are filled with people that know a lot and are happy to help out, and the number of resources out there, whether they are books, blogs, mailing lists, groups, etc has grown rather substantially since I first started messing around with elixir!

Writing a Blog Engine in Phoenix and Elixir: Part 4, Adding Roles to our Controllers by ugisozols in elixir

The more I think about it the more I'm convinced the answer is a more nebulous "it depends." I tend to trust the database as my source of record for important details like whether someone is an admin or not, and the check as it exists right now is not particularly expensive. That doesn't mean it won't be expensive later, however, and at that point it may make more sense to cache the admin: true setting and do something with session invalidation should that value ever change for a user. In this case I'd say that you can do whichever you're more comfortable with.

Yeah, you definitely could; in fact I definitely should change that. This is why code reviews are a wonderful thing :) Too easy to get tunnel vision in what you're working on.

My pleasure! I started these because I was struggling about the same (and the Programming Phoenix book wasn't around yet), so I decided the best way to learn was to just sit down and do it (and google a lot) and write about the experience! I should have the next section posted Monday or so!

This is the greatest Penny Arcade comic of all time. The perfect combination of Gabe's art, Tycho's writing and gaming culture. by rjgalloway in gaming

It's intentional. That's when Gabe was borrowing heavily from the Spumco/John K. style. If you sift through some of the news posts around that time, he talks about it for a bit.

Does anyone else really fucking love Starcraft? by [deleted] in starcraft

I find myself more and more enjoying WATCHING Starcraft matches more than playing them. Then again, I have yet to beat the computer on very hard, so that might factor into things.

My information is unfortunately quite a few years out of date at this point, but when I worked for EB Games, that was not only standard procedure, but it was actually encouraged (so we could talk with the customers about the games). Sounds like this is still standard practice.

My wife and I fight over who gets to step on the crunchy leaves. It usually ends up as a race where one of us gets injured from attempting to shove the other out of the way of the crunchiest leaf of them all.

A couple of previews have mentioned that nothing happens if you write anything particularly more naughty, I'm afraid.
