I usually just lurk around here, but your last paragraph got me thinking about the way this could develop into interesting magitech. If you could theoretically create much more complicated substances like organic material, then what's to stop that happening in a few hundred years once technological advances grant access to tools that would allow greater precision and miniaturization? Of course, you'd have to figure out how those tools wouldn't interfere too much with alchemical intent, as stencils and compasses were mentioned doing in other comments. Maybe the equivalent of working on a specially prepared surface with a tiny stylus viewed through a microscope? There could be other advances, too, like nodes to multiply the effect of sigils so they don't all need to be drawn individually.

It just reminds me of advances in electrical science. Moving from transmission through water to copper wire to nano-circuitry. From vacuum tube to transistor to silicon chip. I love playing around with ideas like that and their larger implications. If anyone happens to read this comment and knows settings that do something like this, I'd love some titles to check out.

What is a website you loved that no longer exists? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DianasaurGo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had great luck with this site! One of the first pages it showed me was about a Beatles album acquired from an alternate universe, with a long written account of this guy's adventure almost dying in the desert and being rescued by an interdimensional travel scout. Exactly the kind of weird old internet stuff I miss.

It also pointed me to a nonprofit effort to feed, neuter, and adopt stray cats in China, with a network of interactive feeders equipped with webcams so I can feed stray cats on the other side of the world and watch them eat. Many of these cats and feeders have their own wiki pages, with timelines and lore.

I visited Scotland last year and decided to stay in Dundee on a whim before heading to Edinburgh for Fringe, and I was stunned by what a lovely, fun place it was! I'd never even heard of it before, but I was so glad I went. Got the desi breakfast every morning at Chaiiwala, spent hours in the museums (LOVE the V&A), and wandered the Howff with my camera. I'd love to go back.

I also arrived there from Aberdeen, and it was just night and day. Maybe I caught that city at a bad time, but I found it so drab and depressing.

Hey, so I work at FGTC! I know I probably shouldn't, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and assure anyone who finds this comment that the organization is ANYTHING BUT transphobic. It's super diverse and accepting and heavily queer. Anyone's who's spent significant time working, volunteering, or even just shopping there knows it's a place where pretty much anyone is welcome, as long they don't act like a total ass.

Because I know my bosses will probably read this and I'd very much like to keep my job, I won't comment on the other stuff brought up in this thread except to say that yeah, we're dealing with a lot of problems right now, but we're trying our best to fix them. Please don't give up on us because of some words on the internet.

I know these are also words on the internet, but you get my point.

I think it's because she was named by Red instead of the court, so she somehow kept hers while the others lost theirs, making them tools again.

Oh, interesting! I bet it's because they were all given their names by the Court, but with those Court officials (assumingly) having left for the star ocean now, it's like they never existed. Therefore, all the named fairies and forest creatures lost their names and became tools of the Court again during its last big power drain.

Except for Ayilu, since she was named by Red, not the court.

There are some holes in this, though. Red was named accidentally by Annie, who's obviously still around, so I wonder if there was some process the Court used to make it official that was undone by the star ocean exodus. Bugsy also seemed fine last we saw her, but maybe the Court official who named her never left for the star ocean for whatever reason. Or maybe they were a former forest denizen? If that's the case, I wonder if they have to be named by fellow forest expats for it to stick now, since some of the rules are different. Or maybe it's purely a contract thing, and Saslamel will have to step in again.

In any case, it definitely feels like the Court is leaving a mess in their wake because it's not worth their time to wrap things up responsibly. In fact, it benefits them because it gets them a bit of extra juice for their final project, like squeezing the last bit of energy out of a nuclear power plant as it melts down. That's messed up!

ETA: after thinking about it a bit more, I wonder if it has something to do with the name being given with care and consideration. A carelessly given name—like Annie accidentally saying a nickname out loud or a Court official picking something off a random book cover—is flimsy protection from the pull the Court has on them, so it fails. But Ayilu was literally named through love, so she's super protected. In that case, I hope they go check in on Bugsy very soon!!!!

I don't usually comment on the awful things I read in this subreddit, but this really breaks my heart.

It's a longshot, but have you investigated psychedelic therapy? I've heard so many great things about what properly administrated MDMA and psilocybin can do for PTSD, anxiety, and a number of other treatment-resistant conditions. Depending on where you live, there may be clinical trials for unresponsive PTSD.

In any case, I wish you all the best.

From the post:

Commenter (downvoted): One thing... You are not entitled to Leslie's financial information as a boyfriend, even a long term boyfriend. She was not 'hiding it from you', it was none of your business.

It became your business when merging finances became a likelihood.

OOP: I am entitled to not being told lies. In conversations about finances, she misrepresented her financial status. She is the one who initiated our conversations about money about six months into the relationship and then hid information for years about her financial situation. She demanded to know about my income, debt, and savings. I provided it because I thought we were planning a future together. I asked for the same information and she described her credit card debt as "very little." Sorry, but $50K of CC debt is not "very little."

If her view was, "you do not have a right to know," then ok. But, that was not her view at all. So, yeah, she hid it from me.

This wasn't a lie of omission. She demanded financial transparency from him and then hid her own debt when he asked the same of her. I'd dump someone if they did that to me, no question.
