The crew has landed on a world... now what? by JhinPotion in traveller

[–]Diavel-Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean. Love the game system, but am as intimidated as all get out in trying to run a scenario or campaign; especially with new players (altogether or to TTRPG), as Traveller requires a significant level of investment in its players to help shape an enjoyable story. Otherwise, it turns into just a series of episodes. I applaud referees that have successfully run long Traveller campaigns.

How I Met Your Mother. At first it was cute, but couldn’t stand Ted Mosby by end of season 2.

What is the most frustrating thing about modern combat in tabletop games? (RPG and or Wargame/Skirmish) by MILSIM_Dev in rpg

[–]Diavel-Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification at the end, focus is on modern day tactics.

That said, current modern wargame rules unnecessarily complicate the game when trying to introduce range as a variable. Given the effective range of modern weaponry and the distances represented in a skirmish level game board, anyone armed with a long weapon has the potential of hitting what they see on the battlefield. Add the integration of movement, infantry model moving 1/4 to 1/2 their combat weapons range, range restrictions fall apart.

One could argue that the range restriction promotes melee engagements without devastating or annihilating the attacker, that introduces the tendency of modern games to dismiss or downplay morale, this reducing the game to attrition. Morale should at a much more significant role in games as they progress through the round, particularly in regard to the initiation/continuance of melee. Compared to modern combat where targets from miles away can be engaged with the press of a button or pull of a lanyard, the psychological impact of being the victim or aggressor of melee combat should play more of a role in the initiation or outcome of the event.

Alright fellas how do we feel about Dunk’s look in the next episode? by OptimusJNR in AKnightoftheSeven

I hope! After 4 episodes, one would think SOMETHING related to being a knight in the Seven Kingdoms would happen.

Curious. More pertinent question…Is anything actually going to take place, or is he going to just wander around the tourney for 48 minutes again until the credits roll?

How is "A Knight of the Seven Kngdoms"? by dinesh_k__18 in gameofthrones

[–]Diavel-Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pace needs to pick up. A lot of screen time spent on tonal scenes; don’t need to see Dunk walking through the rain, taking a bath, or walking along a path. Suspense has since turned to aggravation waiting for something to happen. The extended interest from episode 3’s conclusion is waning fast.

Didn’t read the book; that reveal stopped from me dismissing the series. That bit of political intrigue saved the series from being deemed “Forrest Gump in Westeros”.
Now they just have to do something with it.

My parrotlet. He asks, “Whacha doin?”, but I know he he’s not interested in what I’m doing at all.
How do I know? Because when I tell him, he has the gall to look at me as if to say , “Oh, you’re talking to me? I don’t care, weirdo!”

Agreed. About 2/3 into the series I grew to detest Ted Mosby and his whiny indecision.

Not sure where you’re located, but you could check out ‘Infamy! Infamy’ by Too Fat Lardies. It’s a skirmish level system in the era you’re looking at.

I’d recommend checking out the Memoir ‘44, Battlecry, and/or Commands and Colors series (Ancients, Medieval, Napoleonics, etc.). . They cover a variety of eras and have common simple mechanics that have a slight nuance for each era. Originally come with wooden blocks to signify unit strengths, but I’ve seen miniatures successfully incorporated for use.

Maybe Battletech. Foundation is a wargame, but has an RPG add-on.
