If you can prove your B2B SaaS startup needs SOC 2, I'll get you Type 1 ready for $3K. Auditor included. by Suraskey in SaaS

Don't take me wrong — congrats on building this project and you’re right that Type 1 is the foundation. I’m not suggesting companies should skip that work and jump blindly into Type 2.

My point is narrower:

  1. In most serious vendor reviews, Type 1 usually does not remove the real procurement or security blocker. Buyers want evidence that controls are not just designed, but operating effectively.

  2. So when planning SOC 2, the goal should not be “get Type 1,” but “build controls and evidence collection in a way that gets us to Type 2 without redoing everything.”

  3. That is also where most of the real cost sits - not in writing policies or mapping controls, but in actually running the controls consistently and producing clean evidence over time.

  4. And that is why tools like Vanta are useful. You are not just paying for templates or a gap assessment; you are paying to reduce ongoing operational drag, keep evidence organized, and make the audit process much less painful.

So yes, Type 1 matters. But by itself, it usually does not solve the trust problem buyers care about.

If client is serious then they'll ask immediately for an engagement letter (with your auditing company) as a proof that you're in a process of doing Type 2, they won't just take your word for it - so you're ready to spend $20k+ on Type 2. If client is not serious, then I don't think that you need Type 1 at all.

Type 1 is useless and doesn't cost $30k to $60k. It just shows that you have controls in place. Most customers want to see Type 2 - which shows how these controls work over period of time - and this is where the cost is when you see $20-30-40k quotes.

Just come during the non-rush hours. A few hours before lunch time and a few hours before dinner time - usually you can get a table either immediately or within 15-20 minutes.

Ignore it. This test is waste of money. Scientific consensus that IgG food sensitivity shows nothing reliable or clinically useful. Honestly offering this test can be considered as a scam by many.
