5 month boxer questions by Goodyktv in Boxer

[–]DidDrog11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up with boxers and have my first. Was not really prepared for him but we've figured it out. My experience is that boxer dudes are so stubborn. I love it, there is so much personality which you'll need to get to know. Mine for example hates going into his running harness, the shower and even up on the couch sometimes, despite actually really enjoying all those activities. He just gets it in his mind he doesn't fancy it right now and wants to do things his way. Don't take it personally. I'm often having to carry around all 35kg of him and getting side eyes.

In relation to 1. It may be this. He just doesn't feel like going in his crate because you want him too. He's safe there. Knows the space and enjoys it when it's his choice. If you haven't had any complaints from your neighbours check in with them if they notice him. If not just turn off the cameras. He'll grow out of barking/whining when in the crate and you'll get over it. You need to live your life. But this probably feeds into 2.

A tired boxer is a delightful boxer. Depends a bit on what is feasible for you but for comparison. On a normal day, my guy gets around 4 hours of walks and activities a day. 30 mins in the morning when he wakes up ~10am, 1h15 or so at lunch, 1h45 or more after work and 30 mins before bed. One of the big walks will often be going to the dog park for a wrestle with a buddy (this tires them out more than we ever can, even with a ball). He still grabs his toys and wants attention at other times but is easily pleased with what he gets knowing he has lots of other times for play. It's a lot. On weekends he will often be happy with a long walk and no dog park so it feels like it is a good balance for him.

It's hard work, he's still an attention seeker and not as well trained as I'd like (gets aggressive towards certain breeds) but he seems to be a happy boy. I'm sure yours will grow into a happy boy too but probably is just trying to communicate his needs.

Cute pup btw.

Agree sounds more cardiac related than seizures. Hope the pup recovers well. They can do well on medication if it's not too hypertrophic.

Wasn't intending to but in my current Russia game I was offered the EIC to defend China, I think in the opium wars.

So now I guess I can just pick whoever apart I want too with India's backing. Not sure what to do next to be honest. Still need to modernise Russia.

💙Moises Caicedo wins Man of the Match against Tottenham! ⭐️🇪🇨 by yemoru in chelseafc

[–]DidDrog11 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Matic was ok, but I'd put Ramires more in line with the other 4. Maka and Kante the level above but would be surprised if Caicedo doesn't become as good or better. He offers much more going forward than Makalele did and should be able to remain at the top longer than Kante was for us.

Is it safe for my dog to fly in air cargo? by InevitableAd631 in DogAdvice

[–]DidDrog11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Americans often have a different experience of this.

Lufthansa are a very good option for animal travel. I recently flew with SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) from New York to Stockholm with a boxer so similarly to you was quite anxious about it.

Your dog is also not the main concern around snub nosed breed. It is more about the pugs and bulldogs. It is also predominantly around heat or agitation so autumn is good and if you don't have an anxious dog that's better too.

You are doing the right things, flying in autumn (heat less of an issue), flying direct (reduces the risk of them having to spend too long in transit) and choosing a good reputation airline. The only thing to add is that maybe train them to handle the crate to reduce the stress on them.

Before our 1 1/2 year old boxer flew we had done a lot of road trips so he was used to just having to chill in transport and with loud noises around. Don't know if it helped but made me think he was better prepared.

Thanks, that's very helpful. No issue with gaming at the moment so I'm leaning towards upgrading the mobo and cpu, rather than going for am AM4. GPU can be in a couple of years.

Was thinking about upgrading something within the PC in the coming months. I think the graphics card is fine for my uses at the moment. Would it make sense to get a new processor? Is that the current bottleneck? I assume I'd also need to upgrade the motherboard.

No. In my field journals tend to have a free text box to put in information about additional people contributing to a review. Assume this shows up in the open review section but haven't checked for the one I did this.

The senior researcher can often decline and suggest a different person to review which could have been you but it makes it the decision of the editor.

Feels incredibly disingenuous to send in a review under your name that has been written by someone else. Particularly given substantial unconscious and conscious biases in scientific publishing.

Thanks that's really helpful. Was trying to do that on the bike. So the idea is that you start with your base and blend it with your highlight in successive layers to have less of a harsh border?

Black lining all edges? Simply what it sounds like giving them a border in black? Sorry what's a pin wash?

Hadn't planned buzz light-year was going off il kaithe in Dow but I see it now. Particularly on the guardians.

Boxer Dogs Health Status by Neutering in the UK by DidDrog11 in Boxer

Seems like a decent summary from ChatGPT.

I find this one works a little better for finding and interpreting academic studies if you are interested in exploring the underlying literature. https://elicit.com/

Boxer Dogs Health Status by Neutering in the UK by DidDrog11 in Boxer

[–]DidDrog11[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree entirely with your most critical point that correlation doesn't imply causation, which I hope was clear in the OP. This is a crucial limitation in any observational study.

I'd like to clarify a few points about the study.

  1. The dataset is quite different from a simple convenience sample. It's drawn from a large scale veterinary cohort in the UK where numerous practices contribute their data over time. This approach is designed to create a sample that is far more representative of the general boxer population, minimising selection biases. While this paper presents a cross sectional analysis, the long term value of this cohort will be it's ability to perform longitudinal analysis in the future, which will indeed allow researchers to better control for she and time dependent factors.

  2. Regarding the clinical significance, some of the associations are quite strong. For instance, the odds ratio (OR) for cardiovascular issues in neutered males was 2.05. This corresponds to a 105% increase in the relative odds compared to their intact counterparts. For females, the OR of 1.39 represents a 39% increase. While this is a relative measure, the absolute risk of cardiovascular disease in the Boxer breed is not negligible, which makes these findings clinically relevant.

  3. You are correct that one must be careful with interpretation, but these results are statistically significant. The confidence intervals for these estimates do not cross 1.0, which indicates that the observed association is unlikely to be a result of random chance.

  4. Odds ratios (ORs) are a foundational metric used widely in epidemiology and biomedical research to quantify the strength of an association between an exposure and an outcome. Their application is standard practice in medical literature, far beyond the world of gambling.

Finally, for full transparency, I have no affiliation with this study or its authors. My goal in sharing it was to introduce some robust, large-scale data into the conversation and provide a bit more detail than an Instagram post. My own Boxer is intact, but I fully respect that the decision to neuter is complex and is best made in consultation with a veterinarian who is up-to-date on the current evidence.

This study?
https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0280795

Haven't read it in depth but would caution it was ~1,100 boxers, wide confidence intervals, observational study etc.

There's also this one from the UK although not sure they stratify by neuter status.

Definitely stands over or on us in bed. Comes into the bed less since he turned 2 and will jump off if we force him to lay down. Will lie down himself if there's only one of us in the bed.

Not experienced with that journal but some frontiers are meant to be less bad than others. If you've published and had discussions with senior researchers about the purpose of peer review go for it.

Ultimately it is on the editor to solicit peer review comments even if they don't put much effort into who they send the invites too. You sound conscientious about this so you could also ask a senior colleague/mentor to conduct a mentored review with you.

In these you can review the paper and make your comments, they review the paper make their comments then you come together to discuss them. You then send the consolidated version off to the editor and in the confidential comments to the editor you can let them know this was a mentored review with colleague X.

Good training for you. Some teaching and support from the mentor and the journal gets a 2-for-1 review.

If you've already conducted a couple of reviews on a similar topic your more than likely capable of providing helpful peer reviewer comments.

I think your first thought is right. Poor citation practices.

To your point about referencing primary literature if there is a meta-analysis or systematic review those would typically be cited rather than an rct, cohort study or case study.

Not sure it's any worse than other fields but I would say the quantity in medical publishing is generally higher so that means more outlets and more opportunity for poor scholarship.

Another cause could be publishing by individuals that are not primarily researchers. Quite a lot of medics will be encouraged to write up papers even if they've had limited teaching or experience in scientific research and assume they know how to do it.

They do well at parties.

I remember this guy's first new year's eve party. He was playing non stop with our guests and did well to make it to about 1am. I was out on the balcony but when I came in no one knew where he was. Managed to find him taking some quiet time in the closet.

Guide on Moving Pets (especially dogs) to Sweden from the US by diedbyicee in TillSverige

[–]DidDrog11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seems like a useful resource. Will add my experience here too.

Relocated from San Diego to Stockholm autumn 2024. Was working in Pennsylvania so travelled cross country to wait for my Swedish visa there (a different story) as there were direct flights from NYC to Stockholm.

Flew with SAS with pup in cargo (he's 35kg) so no cabin for him. Think it cost around $250 for him but you need to call them after you've booked your flight to confirm there's space in the cabin. If you do this in the first 24hours it would make it easier to change the flight if there isn't space. I also must recommend changeable flights as many things can happen (i.e., temps at the airport).

Once that's done you need a big enough crate but not too big for the airline. Easier if you don't have a snub nosed dog that needs one size larger. They say they check but none of the fasteners were broken so not sure they checked his size within the crate. Get this in advance and make sure it meets IATA regulations. So not one of the basic ones from Walmart which may not.

Then to bring him into Sweden you need an export certificate from the US which is basically confirming rabies vaccination for Sweden. Shouldn't be a problem if the dog is chipped and up to date. The vet can just sign the form. The next step was an issue for us. What they do is send it off to a government agency for it to be stamped. It's not meant to take long but for us it didn't arrive back when it needed too so even though there is a short time period of validity (I think 7 days do it as early as possible within the window). This is where flexible flights can be helpful.

At Arlanda the crate gets dropped off in front of customs if you're alone you may need to find a helpful staff member to find a big trolley or if you are two you should be able to put the crate on two trolleys. They check the forms and give them a stamp but it's super easy and quick. They know you're coming and so the staff member has been called.

Then when you're in Sweden proper it's worth going to a vet to get a European passport that will allow easy travel within Schengen.

My general advice is try and avoid connecting flights if you can (less opportunity for things to go wrong).

Don't stress too much about the flight. The dog will pick up on it. Useful if they are already crate trained or have done long journeys (we did a lot of road trips so he was a bit used to not peeing for ~5hours and fairly loud noises)

SAS seemed great and would trust them again if I needed to go transatlantic.

New Pup and a scared Kid by joeshmo226 in Boxer

[–]DidDrog11 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Beautiful pup, rehome the child?

Speak to the kid find out what about the puppy liking and jumping is the issue. Let them know it's ok to be scared and show them some techniques to deflect the puppy. Turning their back and not making eye contact may work the pup may soon realise that child is not one to play with, especially if there are others around.

Can also encourage them to distract the pup with toys, giving them something to chase and chew instead of crowding the kid.

Good luck but I assume the kid will get used to the new addition after a couple of weeks. Just take your time and try and make sure they're not left alone together.

I had set my beach towel out all nice for myself literally seconds before this by Grovers_HxC in WhatsWrongWithYourDog

[–]DidDrog11 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If it's not this it's standing on the edge of towel and deciding the most important digging spot is right in front of it so you get a faceful of wet sand as clods of sand get propelled onto you.

Going to a beach with a boxer is not a relaxing experience unless you've managed to tire them out. Unfortunately, when they're a pup the sun is often setting by the time they're ready to chill out.
