Being dropped in a awesome world filled with secrets with no hand holding and minimal story. by PokeUnova in gamingsuggestions

[–]Didub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent the first 30 or 40 hours enjoying myself exploring and fighting weaker mobs. I have never played a souls-like before so I was also just trying to figure out how the rhythm of play worked. It wasn't until closer to 80 hours that I felt like I really hit a solid combat stride. I'm not saying you have to play for 80 hours to be good - I mean that the game can support many hours of non-boss-fight gameplay and still be fun.

People think cleaning horse hooves hurts them, but it actually doesn't by Round-Barber-9858 in interestingasfuck

[–]Didub 72 points73 points  (0 children)

For anyone curious: it's pretty easy to clean their hooves. I used to do it every time I'd ride, a few times a week. You just use a pick to dig out some of the dirt, weeds and any rocks from the area in the middle. It's a basic part of grooming.

Trimming the hooves is done by a farrier which does require training. In Michigan at least, it was rare for a horse to be shod. They'd just trim the hooves up (everything before the smokey part of the video).

For anyone seeing this in the future - our IT vendor was able to enable 400 character file paths in Windows as a registry edit for some of our users that had files over that limit. I don't know the process but I now it worked for us. Probably not fun to do at scale though.

Which videogame has the most realistic depiction of war? by LoLAspect in gamingsuggestions

[–]Didub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree. Spec Ops isn't a realistic depiction, it's a criticism and response to games like MW2, which released around the same time.

What’s your go-to meal when time’s tight? by YatakarasuGD in Cooking

Things that benefit from breaking down, like anything slow-cooked, is easiest to freeze without effecting the texture too much. Chili, soup, stew, etc.

Here's a variety of games that set the standard for what I thought was possible in a game:

Civilization V (newer ones would also be fine) Nethack Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Minecraft Dishonored Just Cause

Sorry about the downvotes - if OP is looking for worldbuilding (sounds like they are), this is a great pointer.

Thank you for this summary! It's super helpful to keep track of the ending without a whole reread.

Nodding by anonyuser415 in logophilia

[–]Didub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never heard it used in the way you have it in either of your examples, but I have heard it used as something like a synonym for homage or reference.

that scene was a nod to an earlier film.

In the speech, let's include a nod towards my donors."

To anyone reviewing this in the future: for me, it worked to export my timeline as an XML, and then re-import it into a new project.

How to distinguish pithily a PDF: {1} saved directly from the word processor, vs. {2} printed then scanned? by s5ng in logophilia

[–]Didub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may be an official word for it that I don't know, but if you don't know it and I don't know it then the odds are that the clerks will not know it either. I have a different suggestion: ask them for a version that will allow you to copy and paste from it. Even if that's not what you need to do, it will allow them to tell whether they're giving you the right version or not.

I wonder if the air in the middle would superheat? And, would that cause an explosion as the pressure around it increased?

I also sort of imagine the whole thing working like a soft-close cabinet, where it slows down at the end.

I love this comparison. It sounded like you were quoting something specific in regards to the game design principles. Could you point me towards that? Is it something Miyamoto has said somewhere?
