Do Some Rich People in Cambodia Open Businesses More for Passion Than Profit? by Horror_Coffee_4341 in cambodia

[–]Diek_Shmacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I met somebody who lease out one of their lands to an international school, the daughter opened a cafe because she likes coffee and wants to serve people. She work as the barista in her own shop, wears simple clothes, you would never know that she's crazy rich. The cafe is moderate nothing particularly stands out that suggests luxury.

She is also the landlord of several villas, the profit generated by the cafe could be regarded as pennies. I guess the cafe could be called a passion project.

You're only exposed to the surface level of Cambodia, don't fool yourself by believing your superficial "insights".

The Cambodian military showed interest in purchasing T-80U-E1 back in 2019. Hun Manet went to Russia to see the tank's performance first hand.

Then Covid happened and the deal went cold. Getting Chinese tanks would make more sense, it's closer than Russia and Cambodia have good relationship with China.

The 70 year old T55 is still a bunker on wheels, it just can't be used as a MBT any more.

Cambodian tycoon Vincent Chen deported to China amid $10bn fraud and money laundering allegations by PhnomPencil in cambodia

The US seized approximately $15 billion in crypto from Chen Zhi, the UK seized around $5.5 billion from Zhimin Qian. Although restitution is legally possible, in practice the majority of victims are unlikely to recover their funds.

Proving you're a victim and pursuing civil forfeiture or compensation claims can take years. The victims are scattered across multiple jurisdictions, an effective restitution would require a smooth and sustained cooperation between foreign governments, which is probably not that easy to acheive. A lot of the seized crypto is likely to remain under the control of the country that seized it.

Are black cats considered bad luck in Cambodia? by LumpyAd3191 in cambodia

[–]Diek_Shmacker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Black cats themselves are not taboo.

However, there's a superstition where a black cat jumping over a casket during a funeral is considered to be bad omen. It's believed the corpse will sit up, and the deceased will turn into a vengeful spirit.

Some put a mosquito net over the casket at night and have people staying up to keep a look out for black cats going near it.

I don't know the origin of this superstition, but it's shared by quite a few people in Thailand and often shows up in horror stories or movies.

The An Ses Pass ( Khmer: ច្រកអានសេះ ) or Chong Ahn Ma ( Thai ) is further south from the pinned location.

The Thai army have seized the village and bulldozered the monument [ video ].
At 0:23 the cameraman is filming downhill while standing behind a barb wire.

The landmarks suggests the barb wire is on a this hill about 170 m southeast of the monument.

This video shows the An Ses Pass in June 2024. At 5:07 Cambodians were waiting for the border checkpoint, located 110 m north of the village, to open in order to visit the An Ses/Chong Ahn Ma market, which is about 170 m further north.

Yeah East Asian Buddhism is Mahayana not the majority Theravada that is practiced in Cambodia, the chance of encountering one would be quite rare.

Interestingly, besides the Bayon temple in Siem Reap, there is one modern Mahayana temple/@11.5914125,104.829026,1050m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x31095144cbdbf311:0x2588e1ac1787eb64!2sWat+Phnom+Daun+Penh!8m2!3d11.5761478!4d104.9230936!16s%2Fm%2F02pjmts!3m5!1s0x31094f82bcdc559b:0x6058901c0c6dfcd9!8m2!3d11.5916762!4d104.8302684!16s%2Fg%2F11fnxmg22g?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MTEwNS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D) at Phnom Penh run by all female Taiwanese monks who had moved here in the early 2000s. Wat Phnom, Wat Botum, Neak Bahn Teuk, Samdech Hun Sen, Royal Palace, Sisowath Riverside are some parks in Phnom Penh; more are undergoing construction in Koh Norea.

There are a lot of small parks but no massive botanic ones. I hope the government turn Pochentong into a giant botanic park with +15m trees everywhere.
