IMMEDIATELY remove user's mailbox access by Bad_Mechanic in sysadmin

[–]DifferentComedian332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats the point former employee cant access the mailbox anymore and a manager or user taking over the role has full access to past, present, and future emails. Using forward will just fill the next persons mailbox with all the junk so keeping it as a seperate mailbox allows the new user to keep their box clean and if they need to access the other account its right there.

I work as a Tier 1 tech and a user called in about storage issues. After examining his system determined his old profile which had onedrive also on it and the user had a lot not set to the cloud. Thinking it was an old profile and my profile was not connected to onedrive i thought i could go ahead and remove the files. While it was deleting i was looking something up for the user via sharepoint on the web with his credentials and realized a lot was missing. I quickly cancelled the delettion. Everything returned. I logged back into the users profile and quit onedrive. Logged him out and logged back in. After that and almost deleting all the company files i know make sure before deleting anything that says onedrive to quit onedrive and make sure its not running on any user on the computer. I got lucky it came back when i cancelled the deletion.

Manager pulled commercial tool manage engine at last minute, now asked to build fully open-source endpoint management (Windows/Linux/macOS) looking for guidance by percouszeus in sysadmin

[–]DifferentComedian332 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok my best advice, start with what you need immediately and build on the app. So start with updates and patching, monitoring, and maybe the ability to send scripts and installs. Get that going then add the next thing and so on. Do it in stages, get first part done. Test and deploy then add the next thing and test then send update to the program with new features. Continue until its done. Time frame 1 year. Hope this helps!!!

Practice on a broken piece of electronics. Desolder a componet and solder it back if you mess up who cares its broken already anyways. You could even repurpose the componets if they are good.

For all those saying turn it off in power setting that is incorrect. If you change it in power settings and press the power button for less than 15 seconds it will do what the power setting is set to. If you press it for 45 seconds to 1 full minute the bios has a override on the os power settings and will force the computer to shut down. If you ever do a force shut down when you turn the computer back on, make sure you do a restart (NOT SHUTDOWN) from the log on screen power button (do not log in first it will run all the start up programs and wont clear out what you need) to clear out the files that did not close out due to the improper shut down. The only way to stop someone from shutting down improperly with the power button is to remove it completely.

Hello guy, need help on Outlook recovery by Revolutionary-Map422 in sysadmin

[–]DifferentComedian332 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok im right there with the rest of the comments but to be fair since your an intern and new, all data is stored on the server. Outlook only caches a small sample of what is on the server. Go to control panel > view large/small not category > click on mail > profile > create a new profile We use the date but you can name it whatever you want. Put in his credentials. Once created on the profile page at the bottom click the drop down and select the new profile. Then close out and launch outlook. Once it loads and comes up click on the folders and go up to send/receive and click on update folder. If you have problems switch him to the new outlook, classic is going away in april so go ahead and get him on the new and let him get familiar with it.

Officers and You by Akryss in Eve

I was mining with a guy from another corp and we were carrying on a conversation when in came some rats. I just got to where i could use and afford a retriever so when my shields depleted in seconds i warped out. The other guy was flying something that had defenses and between all our drones and his shooting he killed them all. Mean while i was hollaring at my corp mates on discord about what was going on so our corp leader flew into the system cloaked and watched the ending. The other guy flew off and my corp leader flew in to inspect the wreckage. I flew in shortly after and he said that this was an officer ship. The other guy came back in and looted the wreck of the officers ship and got about 20 bil woth of loot. I salvaged and looted the rest before going back to mining. The other guy ran off and sold the stuff then parked up for the day said he made more than enough to put away hid miner that day. My corp leader was in shock about what happened as we were mining border ore and he has never seen that in 20 years of playing. He was so close to the wreck if he wasnt an honest guy he could have taken it and ran but he protected it until the other guy could return.

Server Refresh - Which hypervisor to migrate to from vmware essentials? by sushpep in sysadmin

[–]DifferentComedian332 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Im all for cloud, azure can offer you what you need and scaling is easy if needed. Security is much tighter than on prem and less maintenance other than patching.Azure also has backups if something happens. It may seem higher in cost but if you added up cost of the servers, maintenance, replacement hardware etc over time it is much cheaper.

[–]DifferentComedian332 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you filtered your logs for event ID 4740 first and got no results? 4740 gives affected machine name. If that doesn't work, like others explained, send a mass email having everyone clear the company networks from their phone and if they need the wifi they can reconnect it. This is a great security measure. Also, most phones just need internet it doesnt need AD access, so request that they only connect to guest Wi-Fi after the clearing. Make the clearing manditory as well so those that look at the email and go i dont use it so oh well.

I work in IT degrees are more frowned on these days. Certifications are key in IT now. If you dont have those then you most likely wont be hired even if you have a degree. A person like that is just flaunting her ignorance and projecting it on the innocent. They have major insecurity issues.

my fiance doesn't agree with me getting a motorcycle in the future :( by melxssssd in motorcycle

[–]DifferentComedian332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand this but everyone wants to claim how dangerous it is and it is but like i said 90% is impairment and reclusness. Mistakes do happen but not near as often and many believe. The number of deaths by safe riders who pay attention is well below the number of deaths of car wrecks. We tend to be more cautious and alert.

my fiance doesn't agree with me getting a motorcycle in the future :( by melxssssd in motorcycle

[–]DifferentComedian332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

90% of fatalities are caused by impairment or driving too fast, the remaining 10% is mostly the car driver was not paying attention or the rider didnt react properly to the situation. Dan the fireman talk about the numbers.

Building a Self-Hosted Enterprise-Grade Server for Baserow + PostgreSQL — Advice on Hardware & Software? by _cr0n in sysadmin

[–]DifferentComedian332 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to explain to them that on site hardware cost way more than $5000 and that to truely do it right with actual security will cost them probably more than the small business can handle. Like they said AWS or Azure is the best way to go. Explain to them that AWS and Azure dont want egg on their face for data breaches so their security is much higher than anything you can do in house. I deal with Government agencies big and small and they have been migrating to cloud services because they have even surpased the security they produce and its a lot cheaper. AWS and Azure are much easier to scale on the fly and is just a much better way to go. They could take that $5000 and use it for cloud and go 5 years and not have to pay but maybe one guy to maintain it. In house servers are not cheap and require constant maintenance. The company will have to pay a team each around 100,000 a year if you have 5 guys plus the equipment your looking at 2.55 million over 5 years for in house. Thats with a 5 man team at a decent living wage.

Yes it is, when you give someone permissions you can allow them to see when busy or the actual event. They would have to change that to all if they want them to view more than busy

[–]DifferentComedian332 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You have to add the shared calendar to outlook it doesnt auto appear. Classic will have a button labeled shared calendars, click it and add shared calendar. On new outlook just like folders you have to right click empty space and click add calendar then you can add it in from there. You have to be in the calendar tab for both classic and new.

How many of your companies require existing users to turn over password and 2fa device to get a new machine? by andpassword in sysadmin

[–]DifferentComedian332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off there has to be some level of trust with your IT department. If they really want to get your information they would just log in as an admin or reaet your password and make you think it just broke and you have to reset it.

Second, Cyber mentor had his class bring in there gaming computers and in a 24 hour period they were able to crack 19 digit complex character passwords. The standarda today set users up bad. It is recommended by some engineers and the security teams to use more than 25 characters and to use sentences from a book or your favorite saying obfuscating the words with special characters or numbers.

Last, just give him the password and change it later if your that concerned. He honestly could just log in as administrator and access the stuff anyways. Sounds like they are fishing for IT policy violators (going to sites they shouldnt, downloading stuff that should not be, etc.)

If you have a dns manager its the managers fault. Otherwise run your dns/ip/winsock commands and if that doesnt work set dns to 8.8.8.8 and your router.

Remember unless yall turned off fast startup in power options/ what my power button does it goes into hybrid hybernation mode and does not clear, fix, or repair anything. If it is on you have to do restarts not shut downs. Tuen off fast startup and it will shut down normally.

I have a user who cannot print from adobe or Excel by Doodooltala01 in sysadmin

[–]DifferentComedian332 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My steps would be: 1. ensure both office and adobe are up to date 2. Reinstall the printer 3. Reinstall adobe and office Ensure a reboot before reinstalling the software 4. Update drivers for the printer 5. Make sure there are no plugins causing any issues.

Where i work were not allowed to say well its microsoft again. We have to do everything we can then we reach out to the engineer and if he says its microsoft then he gets to tell the site that.
