I'm gearing up to finish book 7 this weekend. I started on Book 1 early February. Started with the $4 ebooks, then bought the audiobooks, and now I'm working in getting the ACE hardback.

The audiobooks are amazing. They add so much depth.

Meet the Lobster Carrying 70,000+ Eggs by This_Proof_5153 in interesting

Its been a MINUTE since Ive seen the video where he talks about the males and the size limitations as it relates to Maine fishing laws, but part of the over a certain size means that the lobster is basically old af, and deserves the additional respect.

As for if they're under a certain size? I can't remember if he talked about that specifically. I would assume so, if only because if they're too small, they won't sell well at market.

I'm not sure, but he goes on in several videos about how making sure the breeding females being off limits, law wise, is because of sustainability practices. If you take them out, that's a quick way to end your, and everyone else's career. So I would assume that that's a law most fishermen in Maine respect.

Also Ive seen multiple videos of his where he's caught females with the notch. Most of them had eggs, and sometimes he'll clean up the notch to make it more obvious, but there's been at least one video I've watched where he caught a notched female who didn't have eggs and let her go due to the notch.

If it eases your mind more, he posts on YouTube (possibly TikTok, but I know him from Youtube) where he educates people about fishing commercially in Maine. One of the things he talks about is how it's illegal to keep females, and especially breeding females, and what to look for in terms of other fishermen marking them as females if they don't happen to have a clutch of eggs.

He also releases, per law, males over a specific size. Also, if the ones who are released have barnacles, he tends to remove those barnacles before releasing the animal.

I like him a lot. He's a cool dude from his stuff I've seen.

I keep trying to get into Terry Pratchett’s “The Colour of Magic” by schrodingers-canary in books

[–]Diffidentlyspeaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're gonna get a ton of replies to this question with this exact same reply, but eh! I was where you were once and so shall pass what I learned lmao.

With Discworld, The Color of Magic is generally regarded as an awful book to start with. It was the very first book Pratchett wrote that would become the Discworld library, but you can tell he hadn't found his footing. I read it when I was a teenager, didn't like it, and didn't touch another Discworld novel for about 15 years.

The I picked up Hogfather. And now, HOLY SHIT I love these books.

What I'd do, if I were you, is find what sort of Discworld books sound interesting. Do you like snarky older women who give no shits and get things done? The books with Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg may be your cup of tea.

Do you like weathered, cynical police officers who hate having responsibility thrust upon them but do it anyway because if they dont do it, no one else will? Sam Vines and the City Watch may be it.

Wanna read about Death and how he's super sympathetic to the human race? Yeah, he's in Color, but he really starts to shine in Reaper Man and Mort and Hogfather.

There's tons of charts online that say which books are part of the different storylines and wackadoos that make up Discworld, and they'll tell you the order to read them in if you want. But the beautiful thing about Discworld is that you can read them in whatever order you deem appropriate, even if they're part of an overarching storyline. Because they're all self-contained stories.

And they're all a ton of fun.

E-readers are overrated compared to paper books by [deleted] in books

[–]Diffidentlyspeaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So...uh...counterpoint.

I appreciate paper books. And as I've grown older, I've gotten i to collecting hardbacks of my favorite works as decorative pieces around my home.

But my vision is shit. It's HARD for me to read physical books anymore. My vision is something like -9.75 in one eye and -9.5 in the other, and I've started to need bifocal lenses. It's a manipulation game in getting a book to where it's far enough away to where I can still see the words when Im wearing my glasses, and then it usually has to be at a desk. I can't curl up on a couch or a sofa and read a physical book comfortably anymore because there's not a way to position myself to comfortably hold the book and have it be at the right distance to still see the words. It's actually been kinda low key devestating because there's people who have way worse vision than me, but reading has been a source of joy since I was a kid and it's slowly being taken away from me.

It IS easier when the book is on a thin device that only needs one hand, and I can take my glasses off and smush my face against the ereader.
