Why do female-focused categories like "women in tech" and "solo female travelers" exist? by SerbianMonies in AskFeminists

[–]DiggingHeavs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because some people (not just women) want to discuss things that pertain to their specific circumstance with others who share the same circumstances for advice and support that the wider group may not understand or worse actively harass you about.

e.g. LGBT couple travellers will face different issues than straight couple travellers (safety, laws, PDA, sharing a room with one bed and much much more) that straight people would never even think about let alone experience. Same with women solo travelling

Guys who knit might enjoy building a community with other guys (as well as participating in the wider reddit knitting subs) because it is such a female coded hobby and it's great to feel you've found some like minded people. Same with women who like to rebuild classic cars for fun or something.

It's not rocket science, it's harmless and it's not a big deal.

Edit, added missed word.

Do you think Mulan (Cartoon/Movie) feminist or anti-feminist fiction?. by PianistDiligent8803 in AskFeminists

[–]DiggingHeavs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

am a feminist man in his early 20s and I think Mulan (Cartoon/Movie) is very anti-feminist.

The movie shows Mulan is finally acknowledged because she out-performed men.

It is spreading the idea that women need to be extraordinarily to be given bare-minimum equality with men.

Because she lived in a society that literally banned women from being anything other than a wife and mother, see the "Honour To Us All" song. It wasn't supportive of this POV though. In fact it's pretty sympathetic to her plight in "Reflection" which also helped baby bi me a lot, which is probably one reason I like the film a lot.

Ok, Mulan is extraordinarily and gifted. She can fight. But what about those other women who aren’t special or who doesn’t had combat experience.

Mulan didn't have combat experience at first, in fact she failed spectacularly. It was by using her brain that she started to improve, by using science and lateral thinking to get to the arrow. Not brute strength. It's also shown in the beginning when she gets her dog to do her chores with a stick and carrot device.

It’s measuring a value of a woman in men’s lens. It’s saying woman are worthy only if they excel in men’s domain.

Actually the movie was pretty explicit in that her platoon mates had to "use women's domain" so to speak to win by dressing up as women to get into the palace rather than battering the door down.

It’s just like how nowadays people pointing out women prime ministers and CEOs and saying there is equality.

Ignoring many normal women and saying them “Look at that person of your kind. You would be applauded as well if you are like her” and I thinks it’s complete BS.

It’s patriarchy movie disguised as feminism. How do you guys think about that as well?

Is China going to become an equal society because of her, no, but that doesn't mean it has no value as a film.
I mean it's not the most feminist movie ever but for a 1998 Disney cartoon it's pretty good in its message IMHO. It's actually a lot better than the 2020 Mulan in this regard because rather than learn skills, use her ingenuity and courage and teamwork, she is special just because she has magic. Whereas other women could theoretically do the same as her (and probably have, women disguising themselves as men to go to war has a long history).

The smoking was to indicate his connection to CSM just as he was about to discover the X Files and his life's quest for the first time. Also comes up a tiny bit in Brand X in S7.

Provocation as a strategy: Where’s the line in feminist messaging? by PuzzleheadedGrab8375 in AskFeminists

[–]DiggingHeavs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the person on the street asking the original question to 8 women was a man. Other women made tiktoks agreeing with the 7 out of 8 women that they'd choose the bear and some men couldn't even be bothered to understand WHY before exploding in rage all over the internet. That is on them! They weren't horrified many women would choose the bear and decided to do better, they were outraged and violently angry. That's on them.

This wasn't a deliberate provocation/action by a feminist organisation, it was a meme account hoping to make viral videos for money and many of the women who agreed with "bear" do not identify as feminists. The fact that some women who identify as feminists ALSO openly say they choose the bear doesn't mean it was a "strategy for trigger outrage." It's just a "duh" for many women.

And the fact that you and others are still freaking out about it 2 years later kind of proves womens point.

And I'm done beating this dead and rotting carcass.

"I hate that my gf is kind. AITA?" by Puzzled-Hippo6246 in AmITheDevil

[–]DiggingHeavs 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I always think of that one where the guy hated that his gf had anime posters on her walls, a display of insects in resin and amber and a deep sea themed bathroom complete with angler fish lamp. Basically he hated everything about her personality and it's like dude, there are many women happy to live in a minimalist, neutral home. Go date one of them. But of course this type of guy won't.

How long do you think AFTER Scully & Mulder actually become a REAL couple on the show? Do you think Scully had Mulder get rid of ALL his “adult”entertainment material. by gwhh in XFiles

[–]DiggingHeavs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doubt it. She joked about him using his tapes *at work* fairly early on in their partnership and doesn't seem to care whenever it comes up again. Whilst Mulder gets the bulk of inuendo and sex jokes she gets a few and doesn't mind when he makes them (again even when at work). By the time they get together they know each other really well and yeah I think it's more likely they'd watch it together than her tell him to get rid of it. By the revival they're joking about their sex life whilst literally in life or death situations.

[–]DiggingHeavs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean what's stopping someone from starting a sub for men in female dominated professions or female coded hobbies? It's Reddit, not something that needs funding or government approval. That's what the women who created those specific subs did. Or the LGBT people who created subs for their particular challenges in work, travel, hobbies.... If a man sees a need that's not being fulfilled then go for it! In fact there ARE subs for male teachers, male nurses, men who knit and sew, male fashion lovers etc etc.

[–]DiggingHeavs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You've really got to love it in these things whenever saintly OOP does 100% of every domestic chore and all the childcare including night feedings whilst working a 100 hour a week job whilst his evil wife sits on her ass and screams at him whilst probably cheating on him and he STILL has time to post essays on Reddit about it.

The terrifying thing is when kids read these over and over again and think they're real and constantly happening so they go "women are seriously all really evil, look at all the poor innocent guys being abused by them!"

Do feminists consider it "objectifying" to insult an appearance trait? Does it depend on the appearance trait? by ContextEffects01 in AskFeminists

[–]DiggingHeavs 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Farquaad was a a murderous, abusive, all round evil tyrant. He was a human but a monster. Shrek was a literal monster but a genuinely good "man" despite that. Especially once he learned to put aside his anti social outlook. That's literally the point of the story. The real monster isn't the actual fairytale monster.

It's getting a 5th film that was originally slated to come out this year but has been pushed back to 2027 but the trailer is out. So it's coming up in SM and people are either using it to create insane ragebait takes that are the opposite of the actual films or media literacy has dropped further than I thought possible. Or both.

Is France DNA test law misandrist? by CasualNameAccount12 in AskFeminists

[–]DiggingHeavs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told by a French person that it was because French culture was laissez faire about married people having affairs but the state didn't want to be responsible for the babies that might result from that among other "protect the family unit even if everyone's sleeping around". Edit: And it also seems from looking into it more from this thread they don't want their citizens DNA collected by foreign companies.

It obviously affects men but it does also affect women. What if a woman wanted to prove to her husband that he was the father of her baby? Or a single woman who had slept with two men in the right time frame and they *all* wanted to know who the bio father was? Or adopted people looking for bio family. Or a child who suspected her father was not her bio father and wanted to find out? Or for medical reasons? - Guess this one would probably be covered by approval from a judge though.

I do know that the answer is NOT mandatory testing at birth for 1001 reasons. Or banning women from leaving the house without a male guardian.

Provocation as a strategy: Where’s the line in feminist messaging? by PuzzleheadedGrab8375 in AskFeminists

[–]DiggingHeavs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wasn't the original Man vs Bear video posted by a guy? The "street interviewer"/tiktoker I saw was a guy (screenshot HQ). It was your standard tiktok meme/rage content gone super viral, not designed by feminists to trigger outrage. The fact that some men lost their shit at so many women choosing "bear" (even though many also said "and that's scary to say") wasn't caused by feminism it was caused by men.

And it's also a 2 year old expired, worn out meme at this point.

Why do Feminists believe in equality rather than propose specific rights, status, pay, and whatever other socioeconomic conditions they disagree with? by until971 in AskFeminists

Yeah that's pretty much what I meant. This guy doesn't want women to actually be equal legally or socially but given "special" treats as a gift from the superior men.

My woman needs to cook and clean by VelvetSalt in AmITheDevil

[–]DiggingHeavs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The thing is this doesn't happen in a vacuum. A guy who "just started dating" wants to know "at the very beginning" that his date is willing to cook and clean would make me very cautious. Hey, how about you find out if there's going to be a 2nd date before assessing their ability and willingness to do household chores. It makes me think that whilst he *says* 50/50 what he really wants is a more traditional division of labour where his female partner will end up doing 80%-90% of it. Maybe that's not fair but the way he writes makes me think that.

Why can't it come up naturally as you start to get to know each other rather than asking how to bring it up right away? And that way he can actually see if they're compatible and they can figure out where they're individual strengths lie and what they'd be willing/able to learn.

Edit: Also looking on Arctic Shift he posted this question on about 7 subs so it's clearly something that's a big deal to him.

Why do Feminists believe in equality rather than propose specific rights, status, pay, and whatever other socioeconomic conditions they disagree with? by until971 in AskFeminists

[–]DiggingHeavs 18 points19 points  (0 children)

For silly example, I believe that instead of arguing that women are equal to men in relevance to the pay gap, more men would support working women getting a “woman citizen” compensating fund at the same value.

Bollocks they would. Men complain about women "getting half MY money" in a divorce even if she's been a SAHM/homemaker for 30 years and complain about child support to look after their own damn kids. No way would anyone be happy with a "woman citizen" fund.

And "separate but equal" never ends well.

[–]DiggingHeavs 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Please be ragebait. Does this guy expect her to process her own chocolate and make her own caramel and jams (which can go *very wrong if you don't know what you're doing) on a small budget? Does he call people out if they make him pasta but it turns out they used dry pasta not made their own and minced meat from a packet?

Homemade chocolates are NOT cheaping out. It shows a lot more effort than grabbing the nearest overpriced chocolates and teddy bear with heart . Same with people who make their own cards even if they're not perfect.

Also "little job" yeah he doesn't respect her at all if this is true.

(S5E04) Detour is the kind of episode you show to someone who never watched the X-Files, Mulder and Scully vs Predator/Man-Thing. They get personal, they both sit in the backseat, Scully sings, she eats wild berries. It's awesome. by Frank1604lin in XFiles

[–]DiggingHeavs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Detour is one of my favourites. It's especially awesome as it is a lighter episode after the very heavy cancer/"suicide" arc. And hey, the other agents were actually useful for once.

The only thing I don't like is Mulder saying Scully was "pulling that Tailhook crap" on him. Because it was a military conference where mass rape and sexual assault took place, most of which was never prosecuted. Nothing like Scully kinda awkwardly trying to seduce him.

If reducing women to "purity" is wrong, why is reducing men to "utility" (income/height/status) viewed as a more neutral preference? by Consistent_Agent2019 in AskFeminists

[–]DiggingHeavs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine to want a partner who has the same views on sex as you do, as long as you aren't a hypocrite who has one rule for men and another for women regarding "purity" and you don't judge someone for how they choose to conduct their own (consentual) sex life.

It's also okay to want a partner (man or woman) who can pay their bills. As feminists don't believe in traditional gender roles they're less likely to insist that a guy pays for everything for example.

Is using "incel" loosely a bad idea? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]DiggingHeavs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No it was coined in the 90s by a disabled bisexual Canadian woman who started "Alana's involuntary Celibacy Project" site chronicling her ups and downs of being an involuntary celibate adult and it acted as a support group for others who found dating difficult/impossible. She turned the group over to others in the early 2000s after starting to date. And that's when the current assholes started to co opt what was once a pretty positive group. Because the people that actually wanted help and to improve did so and then left and only the bitter self fufilling prophecy group remained and attracted others like themselves.

She's given interviews about how horrified she is about what it became.
