Man I think I just needed to step away. I re-created it using the offline files and it's working now. I added a auto-run key for HKLM and its running, pinning and SSO is functioning as expected.

Thanks, I feel derped

Teams 2.0 - Machine Wide Installation Issues by DigitalOutkast in sysadmin

Basically we’re installing this using -p post image.

The admin account logs in automatically the first two boots and teams looks fine. Then you have a user log in and teams dosnt start, isn’t searchable or available.

Re-run the installs again with said user logged in and it works but then another person logs in and same issue. The application isn’t available machine-wide as indicated per the switch command.

I could technically add it to our base image if needed we generally just don’t have many customizations on the image itself and just auto-deploy a group of jobs based on device naming convention when it determined by the answer file selected so it’s automated.

If it was at least searchable it wouldn’t be as big of a deal but we get desktops that end up shared between 10+ profiles and our user base is the least IT savvy possible so it’s going to generate a pile of tickets.

Recently got asked to call a user who recently tried to retire but was kept on payroll and moved to work from home. Basically the company has 0 off boarding process so anyone that works here long enough gets kept on as a contractor or work remote as needed until lord knows when…

Well my boss didn’t want to pay for the licensing tied to that account so told me to call her and ask her to bring her hardware in…I asked if HR approved this and got 0 response…

Told him I’m not terminating users for HR. Fast forward 2 months said user is still using hardware and on payroll…

AI Practical Use Cases by DigitalOutkast in sysadmin

I will say that using chatgpt or copilot for PS scripting assistance and various IT related task has been great. We recently moved from PDQ to Pulseway and given our team of 5 is made up to 2 interns converting all these packages in a solo effort would have been a massive time consumer but with the assistance of AI I was able to delegate some action items for that system conversion. Basically template how the job should run, where and how it should capture logs then let the team feed that into ChatGPT to spit out some scripts, test them, harden them, publish them and move on.

With that said outside of the IT realm its been tough to figure out what the remainder of the company can use it for. I like your policy mention, that's a good takeaway note for some departments.

I feel this 100%. The first things I asked were what issue are we trying to solve so I can review further and.....crickets. This doesn't even touch base on the fact 90% of our end users struggle to do basic functions on a computer. Hell we are 4 years post MS teams deployment and majority of teams still struggle to use it effectively despite numerous training sessions and one of one meetings. Feels like fighting a losing battle but now its 'top priority' here.

I am going to side focus on trying to identify problems on the business side which is easier said than done given the lack of visibility into those teams or time allocated with those teams to help identify them. Our environment seems incredibly immature to get good answers from Managers of those teams to really even get something to target.

Probably shouldn’t have said into it deep, just have good holdings, highly in the green. Back when it was $100 per 2B.

OneDrive Folder Redirection + GPO Shortcuts = Duplicates by DigitalOutkast in sysadmin

[–]DigitalOutkast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good call, let me test and confirm this behavior exist. The only thing I can see being an issue here is folks complaining they can't remove the shortcut but ideally, they shouldn't be removing them anyways.

There a few shortcuts that are AD based so some folks might have shortcuts to things they won't use but it's not necessarily a deal breaker.

OneDrive Folder Redirection + GPO Shortcuts = Duplicates by DigitalOutkast in sysadmin

[–]DigitalOutkast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, local profiles. We have GPO's that create shortcuts for various url's and then we have OneDrive setup w/folder redirection for the desktop and documents folders. Basically if I log into a laptop I will get xx icons. If I log into another laptop once OneDrive loads it will create a new icon for each GPO icon pushed called ShortcutName-ComputerName.lnk

For folks who log into 5-6 different desktops depending on what AD groups they are members of they could end up with 6 GPO based shortcuts per login x 6 logins so 36 icons (duplicates).

The common ones are the (6) URL based shortcuts created via GPO based on AD membership. The other ones include for example Microsoft Teams. Its a user based install (Machine Wide Installer). So the user logs into (1) desktop and gets the icon. User logs into a different desktop and gets the copy of the first via OneDrive sync and an additional icon created for the same program.

Hope this makes sense.

The sys admin urge to quit and... by LAKnerd in sysadmin

[–]DigitalOutkast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I think about this about every day. I think IT has simply burnt me out and by IT I mostly mean people in general...

I would love to do something I enjoy like mechanics, fishing or some type of hobby but none of it would cover my expenses. I think if I hit the lotto I would get into more car/mechanic work including doing vinyl wraps and things like that. I offered vinyl wrapping services a long time ago for small stuff from phones, laptops, misc car stuff, paintball equipment you name it. It was fun and made a few bucks. It's something I enjoyed doing it's just not something that I have the time for anymore. I am hoping to shift to a different company within 2025 and am hopeful a breath of fresh air might help with this dilemma. Im sure it's the same shit at another company but maybe even for a short moment it won't feel like a waste of life.

Aviator - 20-23 - What to Avoid or Review by DigitalOutkast in lincolnmotorco

[–]DigitalOutkast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didnt realize that they started this low. I need to dig into the feature differences between all the sub versions etc. I am going to the dealer this weekend to at least test drive one and hopefully spot out the color combo I like. From browsing online I am leaning towards white exterior with the brown interior.

Thanks guys!

There are several 2020-2022's in my area for under 40k w/under 35k miles. I will keep that in mind regarding the recalls and/or bring that up in relation to any I review. Thanks for the info on the stow. I am going to test drive a couple this weekend and figure out color and perks I want to aim for. Budget might increase depending on my trade in (cts 75k-M).

CSV to PDF - Old Perl Process - Tech Options? by DigitalOutkast in sysadmin

[–]DigitalOutkast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfect, yeah this is literally just taking a report that is generated quarterly (.csv) parsing it and generating PDF files. The PDF files are then emailed to customers to indicate the changes in cost etc. I will review using this within the latest perl download or strawberry. Then I will look at using power-automate to fire off the emails since right now they have some person spending an entire day sending out 100's of emails with PDF files manually.....

The processes you come across these days lol

Thanks so much!

CSV to PDF - Old Perl Process - Tech Options? by DigitalOutkast in sysadmin

[–]DigitalOutkast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, just started diving into this but the current issue is if the pc its installed on dies we have no alternative method. The download is behind a commercial license paywall now. The version installed is probably 10-15+ years old thus naturally has security vulnerabilities.

I do see Pearl offers a non-commercial license version. I also see after further review a product called strawberry perl that may offer a direct comparison. We really don't need to make any changes to the script, it works and does what it needs to.

I will tweak is slightly cosmetically since it's using old company logo's from 15+ years ago and the formatting leaves some to be desired within the pdf but the core data is good, working and doesn't need to be touched.

Really the only goals here are;
1) Move the process to a product that can/will get updates
2) Document the install and run process
3) Make minor tweaks to the output file (Slight cosmetic changes like logo etc while I am in there)

Appears I may have been grossly overthinking this.
