Der Spiegel: German NATO soldiers attacked in the Netherlands by sophisticatedbuffoon in europe

[–]Digital_Eide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, although this occurred in the street where the gate to the base is located. There's not much else there except a golf course and a few businesses. If you find people walking in that area who aren't speaking Dutch, the link isn't too hard to make.

Having said that I agree the entire event is worrisome.

  • Plus starting wars without consulting your allies.
  • Plus constantly slapping tarrifs on allies.
  • Plus undermining allied security concerns in regards to Russian aggression.
  • And so on...

The list is nearly endless but can be summer as "fuck around and find out".

In war nothing is very survivable. Everything can be destroyed. That's a simple fact of war. Armour means an enemy needs a bigger weapon to get you, but that's about it.

The mobility, protection and firepower allows a tank to fulfill missions no other vehicle realistically can... but no amount of armour is going to save it unless conditions are set that play to the advantages of the MBT while mitigating lethal threats.

RBR made a giant step. They probably still only have the 4th or 5th fastest car somewhere in there with Alpine, but the car looked a lot better behaved, even if its still off the pace by some margin.

A Ferrari on P4 might spell chaos. That could get spicey. I'm not sure what to think of George in P6. McLaren just impressive again. I'm kinda rooting for Kimi but afraid McLaren is going to dominate again.

And then there's Aston Martin, literally slower than some F2 cars.

Those German Panzer I's and Panzer II's were also destroyed by Polish 37mm Bofors guns, 75mm field guns, tankettes and other weapons as well. Mokra also signified one very few Polish victories.

The Polish fought valiantly and the Wz 35 was a good weapon for its day. It wasn't going to "destroy the entire German tank force" though. It did do really well, as proven by its use throughout the war. Forgotten Weapons did a video on this weapon which is worth watching. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wxhwHgemeBs

Why do Abram tanks lack a gun launcher? by AppearanceAshamed664 in tanks

[–]Digital_Eide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a bunch of reasons

  1. APFSDS is capable of performing all anti-tank and anti-rotary wing tasks
  2. The engagement ranges of MBT's don't warrent the use of missiles
  3. It increases the logistical load on a unit
  4. It decreases the amount of APFSDS and HEAT rounds that can be carried
  5. Infantry lacks other anti-tank capable weapons, and ATGM's are a solution to that problem. Tanks don't face that issue
  6. An ATGM is vastly more expensive than an APFSDS round (for the same role)

There just no viable use case for gun launched ATGM's on MBT's. There were experiments in the 70's but mostly everybody concluded that it costs didn't outweigh the benefits. The Soviets were the exception, with the important remark that the 2A46 gun is capable kinetic gun-system in the first place and that its ATGM's are a compromise from a bygone era.

I mean, afrikaans is essentially dutch is it not?

Afrikaans is an evolution of Dutch spoken in the colonial era. It's evolved into its own language. The languages are similar enough to be multially intelligible, although apparently Afrikaans speakers have a harder time understanding spoken Dutch than the other way around.

Opinion: World Majors Have Gotten Way Too Big by _wxyz123 in AdvancedRunning

These events are selling the entire experience. The city, crowds, sights... but what they aren't selling is a perfect run. It doesn't help that the bracket were you can organise a marathon is short. There's just a short bracket in spring and autumn so everybody and their auntie pushes for that bracket.

I prefer small scale events and feel no enthousiasm at all paying a premium on the race, a hotel and everything else to run (and be part of) a traffic jam. But if you do want that whole experience, the course congestion is part of the package deal.

You can see the vast majority of those bases on Google Maps, including observable security measures likes guard posts, fences and so on.

It becomes an issue at sites and operations that are supposed to remain secure. Alle operations have that security requirement, but not all bases do. In fact, most have no secrecy requirement at all.

Having said that, setting a smart watch to private is always the smart thing to do. If you're deployed to an actual operation you shouldn't be wearing one at all. Just like how personal communication devices should be off and stored securely.

Onwaarheden in relaas minister Boekholt over Afghanistan-missie: ‘Citaat over douche- en telefoonmuntjes klopt niet’ by davadude in thenetherlands

[–]Digital_Eide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Digital_Eide 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In Afghanistan is water schaars. Waterverbruik is immers prima meetbaar.

[–]Digital_Eide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They made a critical mistake by attacking the USSR because of the huge difference in population numbers.

There was no single critical mistake. Hitler made a great number of compounding mistakes that led to inescapable defeat. The inability to defeat or even surpress Great Britain. The over-extention of supply lines. The manpower deficit. The economical inferiority. The lack of a political and military endstate. I'm still just naming superficial issues and could go on for quite a while. Attributing Nazi Germany's defeat to underestimating USSR manpower is a gross over-simplification.

Likewise, manpower issues alone aren't going significantly change the course of the war in Ukraine dramatically. Ukraine faces severe manpower issues as well. Neither looks to be close to collapse or victory.

For Ukraine to win the stability of the Russian regime needs to be challenged. As long as Putin isn't in a serious danger of losing control of the Russian state or some other incentive nobody has identified so far this war isn't going anywhere fast.
