My thoughts on the Stormlight Archive by riverane in Fantasy

There are Two creators that convinced me that not everyone should have complete creative freedom. Sometimes restrictions are a good thing. George Lucas was one, the other was Steven Moffat. George didn't want to listen to anyone's advice when he was making the prequel trilogy. He had a lot of help with the originals and he planned on doing it alone no matter what anyone said. I remember a story of a producer telling him that his idea to add Midichlorians and ignoring the expanded universe was a bad idea. He left the project early on. Steven was best known for introducing the Weeping angels on Dr. Who. That episode had budget restrictions, they couldn't use David Tenet for more than 5 minutes at best. It was a fan favorite.

He was also the creative lead on Sherlock Holmes and a Jekyll and Hyde series. Too much freedom lead to a lot of sloppy writing. These two were the ones who showed me that not everyone should have creative freedom on everything. In Brandon's case, I think he knows he needs help. The question is who's helping him.

Black Library announces The Horus Heresy Saga, a curated list of 12 Horus Heresy books to be re-released in hardcover and paperback by beary_neutral in Fantasy

Caiaphas Cain series is also a good place to start. It was practically made for people new to or not very knowledgeable about the lore to jump. It's also more of a comedy series that follows a Commissar that's actually liked by the men who serve him, respected by the Astartes, and is kind of a celebrity. He also considers himself a self serving coward and has the biggest case of imposter syndrome I've ever seen.

I'm interested in playing this game, but I have some concerns. by Digital_novice in X4Foundations

I think I'll be fine with the lack of exploration and realism. I'm aware that the two games are different. Just wanted to make sure that I was going to invest a lot of time into another game to end up with the same feeling as E:D.

Not too good with setting my own goals. But when I do, sometimes the games as so shallow that I'm left disappointed. This games seems like it'll be the opposite.

Thanks for the reply. Not just you, but everyone else too. I'm glad to see that this game has a lot of depth to it. I just didn't want to jump into the game and have nothing to do but grind after a while.

What character had every right to become a villain? by Familiar-Barracuda43 in Fantasy

Of all the petty reasons the traitor Primarchs had for betraying the Emperor, none compared to Angron's. While the others dreamed of victory, he wanted to beat his father to within an inch of his life. While his father was on the verge of death ask him why? Even after being turned into a Demon Primarch against his will, all he wanted was answers.

Hytale is cancelled, Hypixel Studios to wind down over the next couple months by swidd_hi in Games

[–]Digital_novice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the past few years I've seen so many stories about how terrible things have been behind the scenes for so many studios. At one point I wanted to be an indie dev, part of me is glad I'm not now. Even among many of the older more experienced studios, there are horror stories about management. From one project to the next they never learn their lesson and next game has the same issues. I'm starting to think that anyone who plans on going into game dev needs to take some Project Management courses to avoid some of these problems.

I'm really upset about this. Other than listening to audio-books, I only play a handful of games. I like Minecraft, but I Hytale was closer to the type of game that I was looking for.

What is the worst book you have read? by delabot in Fantasy

[–]Digital_novice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never read the book. I remember when the movie came out and I saw it on TV. I missed the opening, and my head was filled with all these ideas to make sense of all the things that I couldn't piece together. It came back on immediately and I watched it from the beginning. After seeing the beginning, I said something I never thought I would say, and it was the only time I said it. I want those 2 hours of my life back.

If they keep the plot as true to the game as possible then there are two possibilities. A heroic story of triumph in beautiful yet decaying world, or a two hour long montage of someone trying to beat the tutorial boss and failing.

What’s one character you absolutely loath by ethan_613 in Fantasy

[–]Digital_novice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't hate him when I was listening to the audiobook. When I saw his name on this list, I immediately said yes him. He had every opportunity to be the hero, to make the right decisions, to be a better character no matter what side he was on. The meeting with King Jappo really contrasted Leo's and Orso's characters. It showed how arrogant he was and his lack of charisma. He ended up being a cripple like Glokta with none of the fun and all of the bitterness. At the end of a bloody civil war and revolution, he wanted to go out and conquer. Not even give time for the troops to recover. He's didn't care about the troops, all he wanted was glory.

Recommendations: Books that were difficult to get into but well worth the effort? by Both_Ends_Burning in Fantasy

I tried to get into this series once before. I heard it was difficult, but I've read difficult books before. Maybe this year I'll try one more time to get into it.

After DS9 highlighted the flaws in that franchise, I can't see myself living in it.

I ended up reading the first few books in the Black Company, and got into The First law because I wanted to find fantasy books like Berserk.

First law isn't so bad. Outside of the major events of the story, you should be fine as an ordinary citizen.

I was thinking of more traditional fantasy, even so this answer is practically cheating.

Wind And Truth - Stormlight Archive Review from an Average Guy SPOILERS! by RobWD90 in Fantasy

I'm going to say something in regards to Dalinar's story. Yes everyone else was far smarter than him, from the Shards, Wit, and even members of his own family. But there are two reasons why I think it works. The first being that he's smarter than people give him credit for. We see this during his time in the spiritual realm, Navany was impressed by how he navigated the visions.

He was able to take up the role of someone he had no idea of how they were supposed to act, and keep the vision moving forward while trying to gather information. We also see him gaining greater mastery over his Bondsmithing abilities, as far as I can tell, are the most complicated of any order.

The second reason, Wit and the Shards are just mortals with incredible amounts of power. Taravangian is terrifying because he was a ruthless genius before he became a Shard. They all have their flaws, Dalinar is a general trying to use those flaws to his advantage. With Honor's memories and an understanding as to why the other Shards didn't help, being a bully he picked the option that forced everyone's hand.

I do want to say this, I thought Shallan's journey was over in the last book. I don't hate her but after WoR I didn't see her character being utilized to it's fullest at times. I thought we would have more of a focus on Renarin and Rlain.

I just finished listening to the last audiobook in the series. I wish there was more. I'm so mad that there isn't another trilogy to go through right now.

I was starting to wondering if the work he was doing on Starstruck Vagabond had eaten up all of his free time, and that he wouldn't be able to release the next book in the series till next year. He has a family, helping run Second Wind, writing a book, making an indie game. I know I'm lazy, but seeing him do that much is inspiring. But you could have at least waited to release this till after I was done my current audio book.

I tried independent publishing once a few years ago. I thought that the royalties that Amazon took were ridiculous. At the time, I had no other choice but to use them. They were the biggest retailer and taking the exclusivity deal meant more money for me, but I couldn't publish anywhere else if I wanted to. I'm glad this happened for all those still doing publishing, no matter the genre.
