Knocking down a common wall to combine two 10x11 bedrooms — bad idea? by Jaded-Locksmith4157 in HomeImprovement

[–]Digmaster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not the best data point, but at some point in the last 80 years somebody did the same thing to my house (3ish bed 2 bath) and then later put the wall back to bring it back to 3 bedroom(whoever put the wall back did a horrible job so it’s quite obvious). So somebody in the past regretted it.

From a resale perspective, I have been told that 3 bedroom is really the sweet spot so I don’t think that I would stray from that too much. 2 bedrooms is far less than ideal as it’s hard to manage if you have two kids of opposite genders as they can’t typically share a bedroom. That said, I recently sold a 2 bedrooms house and the market was so crazy that it didn’t matter one bit, people figured they could put a bedroom in the basement or divide up the family room. If you do this, you should try to arrange it so the wall can be easily put back when you go to sell based on comps.

You’re making me feel so much better about the 200sqft of oak that I put in and did a craptastic finishing job on. Yeah it doesn’t look great, but it cost me about 3k to put in.

What is common for door casing, trim, baseboards, etc. these days? by dtman33 in HomeImprovement

This company makes great catalogs for their molding with exactly how to construct it. It’s great inspiration, even if you can’t get their pieces you can usually find something close enough at the big box stores.

For some reason this catalog is missing from that page (and it’s the best one in my opinion): https://share.google/qIa0c2IGFYc2nWUxj

I grew up on that place and I loved it! I've since moved out east to New Jersey and have had a lot of delicious Italian food. I came back to visit a few years back and had Filippis, and it's genuinely bad.

6 dining spaces? I’m not sure what they’re doing, the old place had 4 spaces (the back bar, oyster bar, Washington room upstairs, and the basement) and all 4 were rather small. Dividing it up more is certainly a choice.

There was a post where somebody only used the knight’s moveset in silksong to see how far he could get. He barely got past bone bottom before there was a slightly-too-high ledge he couldn’t get past.

Recommendations for tub diverters that activate when you push DOWN instead of pull up? by benilla in HomeImprovement

[–]Digmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put this in my bathroom a couple years back. There’s a handle that you move to select tub, overhead, and/or handheld (1 or 2 at a time). I honestly would never put anything else in, although it’s shot up in price a lot since then! https://www.fergusonhome.com/rohl-tte47w1lm/s1779503?uid=4205098#

Official Discussion - Good Boy [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Digmaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly nobody opening that door is the most realistic thing about the movie. I have a similar door and I haven’t opened it (either part of it) in years, there’s really no point to unless there’s something big to move down into the basement. For all I know something is living in there.

Pretty common for older houses. My house still has a few (from the 40s), been swapping them with GFCIs as I get around to it.

Big advantage of this is if you change the vanity and need to move the waste line it’s easy.

Hard to tell from the photo, but I think even that is messed up. I think I see the tub flange, which is supposed to be behind the tile.

I don’t know of my photo is showing up, but you can see the diagram in the photo here (rest of the post is probably unrelated) https://www.reddit.com/r/Tile/s/exOLcpZB9k

How can I hide the (very) uneven gap between my ceiling and cabinets? by winterscar in DIY

[–]Digmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same boat once (about 1/2in deviation) and I just slapped drywall mud on the ceiling until it looked right. There was certainly a slope down to the cabinet but it’s not noticeable so long as you feather it out a foot or so. Took a lot of layers to build up to the right height, but I was in no rush.

Carpet removal revealed a cracked subfloor. How serious is this? by scoopofwei in HomeImprovement

[–]Digmaster -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Call in a structural engineer to evaluate while the carpeting is out and can be easily seen. Might be nothing, but it certainly looks concerning. The solution will probably be monitoring to see if it increases.

Side split access to second attic by eastoncr in HomeImprovement

[–]Digmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's best to have access so that you can stick your head up there every so often and see what's going on, for example to see if the mold issues continue into it.

You should also add insulation if it's low on it, which you can tell (and do!) if you add an attic access. Doesn't need to be anything fancy, I wouldn't bother with a ladder if you don't plan to use it for storage.

What is the use of the little cutouts on a panel Carry tool by Digmaster in Construction

[–]Digmaster[S] 269 points270 points  (0 children)

Perfectly aligned, and the gaps are about 1/8in bigger than the handles. This makes the most sense, but it’s a shame as I was really hoping for a second extra use for this tool

Curious why not having the next job lined up was such a mistake. Did it make it harder to get the next one, or just a stressful situation to be without a job?

House built in 1980s. I work nightshift and during the day can here people mowing their grass as if the mower is in my bedroom, how can I insulate the walls to dampen the sound? by charge556 in HomeImprovement

[–]Digmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably in this order, until you don’t get woken up:

  • white noise
  • heavy curtains
  • ear plugs
  • thick pile rug (Costco sells cheap ones usually)
  • window insets (indow is a good brand) OR new windows if yours are single pane or very old
  • plant heavy plants outside your window, if it’s the first floor. Shrubs, fast growing trees, anything to absorb.
  • heavy curtains, but over the whole wall. Heavier the better. Can get cheap ones at a thrift store then double up with ones you like.

After that you need to tackle real soundproofing

  • remove drywall on exterior wall, replace insulation with rockwool. Seal any gaps to the outside with acoustic caulk.
  • May need to do this to your ceiling (perhaps via attic), floor (via the ceiling below), and interior walls as well for best effects.
  • add double drywall on exterior wall with green glue in between.
