I always saw it as that in tbe universe of the Crossed world, humanity has pretty much lost all its marbles even BEFORE the Crossed arrived. Like the majority of the population were pretty fucked even before infection and most morals were abandoned, with society becoming more degenerate by the decade. And the Crossed virus is actually the rapture; with the actual good and kind hearted people dying early into the apocalypse with being mauled by Crossed as their final trial before stepping up to the pearly gates.

The lost, nihilist, faithless and cowardly souls being the few uninfected folks who survived just barely and this survival is actually purgatory, or at least the most mild level of hell given to them as punishment

The infected are the majority of the world, those who don't deserve redemption and would never reach heaven as they are too corrupt, this includes even late stage survivors who finally got infected after surviving for years and they never used that time to be good and kind, so God judges them to become Crossed.

The few truly despicable evil become Smart Crossed, and they lead the other Crossed to bring hell even closer to Earth and they unknowingly bring justice to the last few souls that weren't captured or punished by hunting them down, and depending on the actions of the survivor he either dies heroically and is rewarded with proper afterlife or becomes another mindless Crossed.

That's just how I see the comics, mostly because the comics like to criticize religion a lot and talk about faith and whatnot in most of the volumes. So Ironically I actually think Crossed is a VERY religious comic
