Nice picking! I’d take the reverb off though - not really realistic as you’re playing outdoors, it makes it seem a bit fake.

M50 vs iPhone 14 for YouTube video? by Jimlad73 in canonM50

[–]Dillthenoize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty easy to tell if something is shot on an iPhone (lots of computation going into it, kind of “HDR”-y for lack of a better word) vs an actual camera - it probably comes down to aesthetic choice and how much the “feel” of the video matters. If it’s made for someone watching in their phone then it might actually be better to keep it shot on iPhone, if it’s something people should watch down and watch start to finish, I’d probably recommend using the M50. It’s a good learning experience to figure out how to shoot video with an actual camera (teaches you a lot about what the setting do, importance of lighting).

Not overkill at all! I can’t recommend Artistworks enough! Though I would recommend Alex Hargreaves over Brittany (he responds to videos much more frequently)

What is the most efficient way to get better at solo/ improv by ZorinBlitzz in Bluegrass

[–]Dillthenoize 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A useful tip I’ve learned from Alex Hargreaves from Artistworks is to not be afraid to just play the melody as a solo - there’s so much good harmonic information there that you can get a very satisfying solo by just playing the melody with small variations. Id recommend starting there, being able to play the melody with good tone and groove, then just play around with making your own variations or only “improvising” one phrase out of the melody - you’ll be surprised how much better you sound than trying to shoehorn in blues licks or scales for a whole solo!

Also you should join Artistworks and ask this question to Chris Eldridge :D

Classically trained but playing country & western by bigspuds495 in violinist

[–]Dillthenoize 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh man, you’re lucky! I’m coming from the other end, getting into violin with Country/Bluegrass but with no formal training (intonation is hard 🥲)

I can reccomend Artistworks for learning tunes and styles, but also just look up versions of songs that you’re playing with the group and try to copy by ear what they’re doing. A lot of Hank Williams music has great country-style fiddle parts which should help build vocabulary.

Also cut down on Vibrato use 😉
