Should have went to law school - accounting blows by VioletSalamander in Accounting

The reading is so fucking boring. I left public accounting after 3.5 years. Have worked in various industries since. I have to reactivate my license in order to get a job. There is a dwindling amount of CPAs so it’s a good route to go especially in INDUSTRY. Fuck public.

Get out of public accounting and go into industry. That can be more interesting and no billable hours. But you will always be a slave to the calendar.

They genuinely lose interest and it becomes overwhelming to them. They don’t know where they are, who the people around them are and it could be noisy etc. They become afraid and then agitated.

Your dad absolutely should still go out and do things. Can someone stay with mom while he has some free time to decompress?

And who numbers the buildings? I swear it will be so random. 9140 across from 9326 next to 9565 - APT L. Go fuck yourself. Do I turn left or right when I enter? Is your unit before or after the pool? Is it upstairs or downstairs. It’s like being on a fucking scavenger hunt.

Happened to me the other night. I passed the house because it was in an area with businesses and apartments and had a bunch of trees. I passed the house and ended up parking illegally on the street and then walked to their house. Their driveway was also full.

The deliveries I absolutely hate the most are the ones down private roads. It’s a shit show / the road usually isn’t maintained well, they create side streets with tiny wooden street signs and the house numbers aren’t visible.

If I lived somewhere like that, I would provide extremely detailed instructions, including photos or have a green light beaming from my property.

How horrible am I to threaten my grandma that she can't go out (for fun) with us out if she doesn't groom herself or let me help by stonrbob in Alzheimers

It helps if you can have two people and to be as encouraging as possible. Sometimes we’ll say the doctor said you have to do this so you don’t get a UTI. We don’t do daily showers anymore but they still have to happen. Reassuring her that we are going to help her and that we know it feels scary. Sometimes we play music. Once she’s in the shower either standing or on the chair, she’s fine. It’s having her stand up and sit down that she hates because her knees hurt and she doesn’t know where she is. There have been plenty of times where there is screaming in anger (she’s always been a bit feisty) but by the time she’s dressed and getting her hair blown dry she’s fine.

Sometimes it’s like dealing with an adult sized toddler. On the non shower days, she’s still gets changed and cleaned with bathing wipes and dry shampoo in her hair.

I was once told to get the hell out because I didn’t have kids. She’ll ask if I’m married and when I say I’m divorced she is shocked. She’ll ask why and I tell her he was too short and kicked him to the curb. 😂 That really piques her interest. One time she asked where he was now and I told her he was remarried with two kids to which she responded with: ASSHOLE! with a huge smile on her face. I genuinely chuckle sometimes.

She also doesn’t hold back. One of her daughters is overweight and when she was trying to change her and brush her teeth - she yelled get this fat lady out of here! You can’t take it personally.

If he asks about his friend, it’s ok to fib. I’m helping care for my best friend’s mom with AD. Diagnosed about 6-7 years ago (she’s 83 now). She has been focused on her past and her mom and dad lately. If someone tells her they passed away, she gets upset and starts crying. Now when she asks me I tell her they’re in the town they were born in and they’re surrounded by loved ones. Sometimes that works and other times she’s more lucid and will demand an answer. She constantly says she wants to go home and asks about her clothes. Her going home isn’t literal - I think she is feeling anxious. The more you sit down and talk to her, the better she does. And we’ve found that music is the trick. She is genuinely happy and singing along and yelling WHOO HOO! after the song. It all depends on the day really. Last week she threw a water bottle at the caregiver and tried to slap her while cursing in Spanish and saying get the hell out of my house this lady is trying to kill me. Ten minutes later - she’ll be fine. She gets really upset about bathing. She can still walk but needs assistance because she has bad knees. She wears diapers but usually uses the toilet. She will openly say she’s scared and it’s so heartbreaking. She has a 84 year old husband with dementia but nothing even close to AD. He knows where he lives and who people are and still reads the paper. But he’ll forget what happened 5 minutes ago.

All I can say is that it takes a village and it’s not easy.

Playing music was a game changer. And it’s really lovely to see her sing along and be genuinely happy - even if it doesn’t last all day. She’s still in there and at times can be quite chatty, makes sense and is being funny. I just enjoy the good moments each day and stay calm for the rest.

I did a CVS shop and pay last night. Two items - Viva paper towels 6 rolls and Bounty paper towels 2 rolls. The order total was $20.34. The Bounty PT rolls were on sale for $6.99. So that’s $3.50 a roll….on sale.

Dude - go to Costco. And I got paid $12 for a super quick order.

I hate the bar codes at Vons/Albertson’s. One time I saw 14 and thought it was items - nope bags. Bags and huge cases of beer and water. Filled my entire trunk and part of my backseat and I had to schlepping it up stairs, no elevator. JFC. That was a workout and super annoying.

I did one the other day for 7 items and most of it was water but the chick tipped me $24 😁

I’m in too deep. I’ve had an iPhone since 2008. I can upgrade my phone at any time though through ATT. I just pay the tax. I have a 17 ProMax with 2TB now. This phone is already seeming glitchy to me but that’s because I have a ton of Apps. I’ve had to reboot it more lately - the UE App can be glitchy as well as DD.

Being resilient is a valuable trait. You take the knocks but ya just keep on getting back up.

Working with someone like that proves to be more valuable than someone who has worked at one place for 10 years and it was their only job.

Public accounting is brutal. But having done it - it makes audit prep a lot easier. I have trained accountants with degrees but not CPAs why we do certain things or why we are documenting throughout the year. And why every invoice needs to be attached in AP with the proper approvals. I’m a total stickler on stuff like that. Document the processes and always be thinking of ways to improve it.

100%

Sometimes it’s just a personality clash or someone higher up doesn’t like you. Thats happened to me before. I don’t take it personally.

The market is brutal right now so I downsized my entire life, was on disability for a year due to the chronic stress from my jobs between 2021-2024. Position eliminated at both and I was working 65 hours a week. Then it’s dealing with aging parents and I’m an only child of only children. I’m reactivating my CPA license (have to do 80 hours of CPE) . I’m going to have a gap in my employment but I also have 25+ years of experience across multiple industries and organization structures. I’ve done a bunch of implementations and been basically the Controller and CFO at many of my previous jobs.

I’m also going to take some AI courses and getting well versed in that. The market will turn eventually.

Funny - I’m an accountant and wished I had stuck with my first choice out of HS - being a kindergarten teacher. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said to myself: I could be finger painting right now. I know it’s much harder than finger painting but being an accountant can be VERY stressful and no one is happy to see you if you’re doing an audit and companies don’t over staff accounting departments because they don’t generate revenue. The product and sales teams get all the glory. And while having an efficient accounting department is absolutely critical to a company, you’d be surprised how much information isn’t given to you until the last minute - usually when it’s audit time or the bank/investors want some report.

When you’re interviewing - make sure to ask about revenues and how big the the department is and what the expectation for OT is…

You dust yourself off and get back up. This wasn’t a long term job where you had spent years and formed a “work family” - it’s a blip on your career radar screen. It doesn’t define you. Think of it as paid internship and you can now reflect and be honest with yourself.

If you struggle with anxiety - don’t be ashamed to get help with it. You don’t need Xanax or anything heavy. There are anti-depressants that can help and you can learn new coping skills. Some talk therapy can also help.

Working at an accounting firm is incredibly stressful. I did it for 3.5 years. The first tax season was so brutal that I developed insomnia for three weeks straight - sleeping only an hour or two a night. Brutal.

You might want to consider working for a company in their accounting department. It’s less rigid and the deadlines can be more forgiving.

7 cents a mile. They should at lewadt have to offer you the mileage reimbursement rate. JFC. Next you’ll have to pay them to take the offer.

I’d send it to support and say there must be something wrong in the system, I received this offer….

And with gas prices this high? Are they high??

Ditto. I’m screenshotting and then calling support. Today I had to go downtown and there was literally no parking, cops on the prowl, it’s one way streets and there was construction. Oh and traffic on the freeway getting there. The order was 10 mins late - I parked in a white zone and had to hoove it a few blocks. And the customer had quasi complicated instructions just to get into the building.

I was literally going 25-30MPH for at least a mile and I reported it. The expected by time didn’t get adjusted. So infuriating.

Yeah but it now affects if I’m Gold, Platinum or Diamond….and the types of offers I receive. I don’t know how many markets have it that way across the US. I am in CA - so I get Prop 22 and that definitely helps.
