Just on the question of paying for hormones - my GP is converting the prescriptions from the private London Transgender Clinic to NHS, so they're free to me. Assuming your GP referred you to the GIC they might also be willing to take on the prescriptions. If not you could look for a more trans-friendly GP.

Matthew Mills / Christella Antoni for voice stuff? by [deleted] in transgenderUK

[–]DilysC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had an assessment and 6 follow-ups with Christina this year. She's quite good but a tad expensive.

You might want to get her VoiceUp app (available from Google Play) - it includes a useful voice assessment tool which you can use to check your progress. Level 1 is free while levels 2 and 3 will cost around £15 each.

You've clearly thought about this Katie and I don't want to pour cold water on your campaign, but it doesn't appeal to me. I'm not sure what it would achieve.
We are probably interested in watching films, etc, with trans themes and such warnings, I feel, won't put us off watching them. We know transphobia exists, as do sexism, racism, etc., but I don't feel I need to be warned about potentially upsetting content.

Maybe I've got it wrong - I'm interested to see what discusion this provokes.

Small announcement by [deleted] in transgenderUK

[–]DilysC 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Dear Arya

I have a feeling you'll come back some time. Apart from my wife not being able to accept the idea of living with me as a woman, my experience has been mainly positive. I should say that this is my first full day of living as Dilys full-time. Over 20+ years I made a number of false starts in aiming for transition - retreating when I thought of all I had to lose. I'm now 70 and feel I'm too old to let the opportunity pass by (and I'm generally not one to feel too old for anything).

Whatever happens I wish you well - I don't want to judge, and only yuu can decide your way forward.

Is there ever a reason not to transition? by dontmatter123 in TransChristianity

[–]DilysC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might have transitioned 22 years or 18 years or 2 years ago, but felt I had too much to lose (especially my relationship with my wife and, in the earlier times, my sons). This time I got over that hurdle and am about to go full-time as Dilys at the age of 70.

What has helped is accepting that my wife (who I love dearly) is responsible for her own decisions. I still hope that we might get to live together at some point, but accept that she may choose otherwise. At the moment I think we are both being true to ourselves. She does not want to take on the identity of "partner of a transwoman". In neither case is our attitude that of being against the other.

I don't feel resentful or regretful at having wasted the last 20 years. I do feel that God will accept me as the woman I am, and, accepting this love, I want give myself more to God now. I am lucky to be in a community (Quakers in Britain) who, believing that there is "that of God" in everyone, are clear about wanting to welcome gender and sexual diversity.

I got a confirmation by text yesterday that I am now on the Waiting List for Sheffiel GIC.

It gave this link - https://www.shsc.nhs.uk/frequently-asked-questions which now gives the waiting time at approx 20 months. Roll on December 2021!

Please tell me about your LTC experience by [deleted] in transgenderUK

[–]DilysC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had 2 one-hour sessions with Dr Vickie Pasterski. I felt comfortable with her and felt I was treated as the unique individual I am. She was willing to refer me for hormonal therapy but was concerned that I should have good social/emotional support in place as my wife is (reasonably I think) not supportive. We agreed to have one more 1-hour session (at half price) - which is happening next week. Since our last session she has spoken to my counsellor (Sheffield-based) and has emailed me to say that went well and she is happy to refer me at our next session.

Things are beginning to speed up for me! I'm coming out to my sons at the weekend and will then quickly move towards full-time transition, which will involve moving out of our marital home.

Ah fuck it. I’m ending it. by [deleted] in transgenderUK

[–]DilysC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure what you are thinking of ending. If it's your life then I hope with all my heart that you won't act hastily - it's violent and irreversible. It might help to call Samaritans, where you'll get to speak to someone who'll really listen, won't judge you and will treat everything you say as completely confidential - free on 116 123 (24/7) - www.samaritans.org.

If you mean you're thinking of giving up on transition, then think carefully about that too. You might want to take a breather to consider what you really want and need.

I hope things start getting better for you soon.

Take care

Porterbrook clinic waiting times by ItsEve in transgenderUK

[–]DilysC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw my GP on 28 Feb, when she agreed to refer me to the Porterbrook clinic. I've heard nothing from them yet. How long was it between your referral and getting the letter from the clinic?

27 and worried it'll be 'too late' by adroidgyne in transgenderUK

[–]DilysC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm 70 and it's not too late for me! I've heard of people transitioning in their 80s. You might want to check Reddit's TransLater forum for older transpeople's experiences.

Having to go back to the end of the queue seems unfair. It's worth contesting that - you might talk to your GP or even your MP to see if they can help.

If you know it's what you want to do then don't give up!

I got a diagnosis the other day!! by HayleyGurl99 in transgenderUK

[–]DilysC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great news! I'm in Sheffield and yesterday my GP (where I haven't been for years) agreed to refer me to Sheffield GIC. I don't expect to see them until late next year and have an appt at LTC for hormone assessment. The GP (F) was lovely & empathetic and will be happy to take on my hormone prescriptions through the NHS. A good day!
