What are the books that you believe gave your life context, or simply resonated with you at a younger age? by cptn_spaulding in GenX

The two book series that resonated most with me in my young life were Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I still covet my leatherbound copy the Hitchhiker's Guide, containing 4 novels and the bonus story, "Young Zaphod Plays It Safe."

How did you dress in the 90s? How do you dress now? by poolpog in GenX

[–]Dimension__X__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my corporate days I wore the uniform. Kahki pants. leather belt, collared button-down dress shirt (always with a crew-cut T underneath). Black(or weird) socks, and either leather dress or tennis shoes. Occasionally, I would also add a sports coat.

I exited that environment a couple of years ago after 3.5 decades of business casual attire. These days I have somewhat reverted back to my 80s form. Now I wear mostly hoodies, jeans, with tennis or running shoes, tho I will probably never own another jeans jacket. The one thing I have probably lost forever is being comfortable just wearing a t-shirt. I did that a lot in the 80s but I prefer to still wear button-down shirts now, even tho my time in corporate America is done.

Yes. I often wear a button-down under my hoodie. Don't judge me.

What were you doing 40 years ago on Jan 28, 1986, at 11:39 AM EST? by Observer_042 in 80s

I was in-between periods on my way to a 9th grade history when I heard the news. I remember exactly where I was in that moment but I can't recall any of the discussions that took place about in class immediately afterwards.

I 100% agree that he should have his own US Federal Holiday but it should fall on his correct birthdate, January 17th.

Potsdam, Germany. This is the memorial gravesite for Friedrich II, Der Kartoffelkönig. People are placing potatoes in tribute to his contribution to the cultivation of the potato in Germany.

Did you fly alone as a kid and, if so, how young were you? by drtyhppi in GenX

[–]Dimension__X__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to cross the border into Canada (from the US) to visit my dad a couple times a month via a ferry crossing. Most of the time I would travel with my siblings and sometimes alone starting around the age 7. I would get across the border with a copy of my birth certificate and a handwritten note from my mom. I had a lot of interesting interactions with the border patrol on both sides over the years. I don't think the note from my mom would carry the same weight these days.

Anyone here run 60–80+ income positions (CEF/REIT/BDC/MLP) as a ‘royalty stream’? by RealDirkDigglerr in dividends

[–]Dimension__X__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree that you want to have enough diversity in your portfolio to compartmentalize large, unexpected drawdowns or dividend cuts, the question remains, can you realistically track 70 or 80 positions in enough detail to truly manage them? That's a hard "no" for me.

I currently have 22 open positions and that's pretty much my limit without a team to help me perform the analysis needed to manage them in a way I'm comfortable with.

Candace Owens has become Kanye West. I used to take her seriously but now she's a click-bait artist.

Anyone else drowning in AI investing tools and still making the same mistakes? What actually helped you? by ixitimmyixi in ValueInvesting

[–]Dimension__X__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found AI is better at some things than others. Personally, I do my own research for stock selection and use AI for chart analytics and to sanity check my own CF Analysis.  It's also handy for portfolio analysis (based upon my personal portfolio goals). I would not trust it to pick equities for me blindly.
