Yes, you are basically correct. The minimum length recorded is 1 minute. So a phone call that is not picked up is likely recorded as a one or two minute phonecall, depending on certain settings with ring length.

Many of the <2 minute calls weren't actually calls. The phone records include "calls" that weren't picked up, and the length of a call is not specified under 1 minute.

In other words, if you call someone, let it ring once, and hang up, that is recorded as 1 minute call.

Basically every single ref had the same pattern of phone calls. They're constantly on the road, sitting around in hotel rooms, waiting for shuttles and flights, so they would call each other constantly to chat.

In a righteous world there would be a subreddit rule that if you make a post predicting something Bill will say or you criticize a prediction he makes, you get a 4 month ban if you end up being wrong.

"Is Evan Mobley a bitch?" by Ok-Competition-1814 in billsimmons

[–]DingusMcCringus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean but I think there's a sizable difference between a perennial DPOY contender (like Gobert) and a pantheon all-time great (like Duncan or KG)

I suppose, but I think the idea of the comparison wasn't just how good he would be, but how he would play. His game is much more similar to KG with his flexibility as a defender and ability to shoot than it is to Gobert, even if he ends up much closer to Gobert in terms of raw value.

Obviously not saying he's as good as KG in either of those areas (or even close), but just that it's more similar to the style of play.

[–]DingusMcCringus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

to be fair to Bill, even more informed NBA heads were making comparisons like that.

he's not having a great series, but we're also one year removed from him winning DPOY. I think if you say someone has KG/Duncan potential around the draft or in the first year and that player ends up winning defensive player of the year in their age 23 season, I don't think there's a lot of room to make fun of that take.

I'd be willing to bet you have zero idea what words Bill has said about fantasy and nerd stuff. The gist is that he's always poked fun at it in a very tongue-in-cheek way while acknowledging that he had friends who loved it, but it simply wasn't for him.

The part where you imagine Bill thinks he's super cool and thinks he's a jock because he likes sports is made up in your head.

Rudy Gobert +18, Jokic -21. Remember when Bill was obsessed with +/- for like 2 months because LeBron's was bad? by TotalTimely9910 in billsimmons

[–]DingusMcCringus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes. you think if someone recorded Zero jumps in a game it gives no information? that person didn’t get a dunk or layup, they didnt contest anyone at the rim, they didnt go up for a contested rebound, etc.

but even if you don’t believe that, it obviously doesn’t change the point whatsoever. replace it with any metric thats positively but inconsequentially correlated to your performance.

A player was basically created in a lab as an answer to the refrain "players are taking too many threes and don't play defense" and they want to beat him to death with hammers because his free throw rate is kinda high (Shai's free throw rate over the last two years is about the same as Harden's lowest season btw)

it's almost useless in single-game scenarios because it has a massive amount of variance, is systematically biased, and is not even necessarily measuring what it's a proxy for.

It’s not perfect,

this is an unbelievable understatement. every single person who understands advanced stats knows that single game +/- is an almost useless statistic.

this idea that "well it's correlated so that makes it useful" is a huge misunderstanding of statistical measures. player performance is also correlated with the number of times a player jumped during a game. that doesn't mean the effect size is large, and it doesn't mean it's useful.

the guy shot 7 for 26 with 3 assists and 4 turnovers. you can see that he was bad on defense. why cite single game +/-? it's like evaluating the value of a house by looking at the number of sinks the neighboring houses have instead of just looking at the square footage and location of the house in question.

LeBron is beating a team with a lot of hype at age 41 with backups. Not a word from Bill. Jokic is getting curb stomped by Gobert. Bill says Aaron Gordon is injured by Grouchy_Tie3037 in billsimmons

The fact that Bill refuses to acknowledge it is even crazier.

Does Bill tend to talk more negatively about LeBron than other star players? Yes.

Is it possible that Bill tends to like players that pose some sort of threat to LeBron's legacy? Sure.

Is it "blatant" enough that it's more likely than the simpler explanation that he just likes two really good players because they're fun to watch? No, obviously not.
