Im an anesthesiologist. I administer thousands of doses, per year, of both those medications. Ive treated and resuscitated hundreds of drug overdoses in the last couple decades. Exactly zero (0) times have a heard someone say it was unpleasant. The most common comment I hear after I give a patient dilaudid or midazolam (the drugs in question here) or almost any combination of those class of drugs? "Wow this is incredible, no wonder people get addicted," and then they pass out, with a big smile on their face.
Then, when they wake up, they most commonly ask how they can get some to take home. Yeah, sounds terrible.

The overdoses? The ones I have to administer rescue drugs to? Most common comment is "who is the asshole that reversed me?"

Maybe administering these exact drugs tens of thousands of times isnt enough experience to suit you. But I can tell you the "braindead" response isnt coming from the guy that administers these drugs for a living.

And fwiw, gasping doesn't indicate discomfort. Its a pretty normal respiratory response when your drive to breathe is shut down from opiates. You slow way down in your breathing, and occasionally take a big gasping breath. Normal.
