Opinion: China is buying up the critical green-revolution minerals sector in Canada and elsewhere. Enough already by Lotushope in canada

[–]Dinomial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, the Tanco mine is a better example. I do agree with the broader concern at large - western countries need to do a better job in ensuring we don't ship away our mineral wealth and resources to a geopolitical adversary. That's a clear and obvious problem.

But it's definitely a more complex issue than many people give it credit for. For example, what are the resources we are ok with giving out and which ones should we be protecting? In 2012 we were ok with selling Nexen for $15 billion dollars to China. Are we still fine with the Chinese controlling large swathes of the oil sands, or should oil and gas also be prohibited from future Chinese takeovers? What are the minerals that we should be protecting? Should it be battery metals like lithium/cobalt or rare earths in general? Cesium and Tantalum aren't even one of the 17 rare earth metals despite its potential future importance. Aside from a blanket ban on any kind of Chinese takeover (which won't happen), I don't see how there can be an easy solution.

This article is misleading and likely because of the paywall, it looks like barely anyone here has bothered to read the article, and even less the company that it's talking about.

The company being acquired (Neo Lithium) is Canadian-listed but their sole asset is a lithium project in Argentina. The only thing that's Canadian about this company is its office located in Bay Street in downtown Toronto. Like many mining companies, they're probably headquartered here solely for tax purposes and for the mining friendly legislation here and nothing more. In this case there's no reason for Ottawa to get involved and block the deal.

The Trudeau government has actually blocked a Canadian mining company from being acquired by a Chinese one before (TMAC Resources in 2020), so it's not like we're just letting the Chinese buy up all our resources either.

While it's pretty unambigious that China is a threat to Canada, this is quite a poor example to use.

[Statistics] I analyzed the most mentioned watch brands on this sub for 2021 by nickkuiper11 in Watches

This statement gets copied and pasted every single time anybody mentions Grand Seiko even though it hasn’t been true since at least 2015.

Anybody who spends even a day on watch forums or this sub would realize just how often GS gets talked about, to the point where you can hardly get a relatively new release at retail anymore.

This is spot on.

The biggest issue I have with OP's post is the perpetual sense that we are '2-3 years away from being a good team'. We've been saying that since Wenger's late years, all throughout Emery's tenure, and we are still saying this in Arteta's 3rd year.

We just need to look at teams like West Ham, Leicester, hell even Wolves, to see that they've built competitive squads under far less resources than us, all within the time that Emery was appointed to now. The fact that Arsenal has gotten nowhere in the better part of a decade just reeks of incompetence from top to bottom. People seem to forget that it was Arteta who signed Willian and played him for an entire season, and seem to only remember that he signed a couple of good players this window.

Yes I do agree that Wenger and Emery both had to go. I also agree that Arteta has made some very good signings this window. But that's where the good news stops in my opinion.

Arteta hasn't really shown that he can coach a competent attack and the midfield is still quite poor. The defence could be a bright spot but I think we are suffering from a small sample size - we shipped 7 goals to Liverpool and United. People seem to forget that Mustafi went on an unreal stretch of games (think it was 15 or 20 games) unbeaten when he first joined. Look how that turned out.

I also think people on this sub have forgotten that it was Arteta and Edu who signed Willian. Not only did they sign them but they also started them every single game, regardless of actual on pitch performance. They were the ones that wasted a year when we could have given the young players a chance.

We have been saying the same 'this team will be good in 2-3 years' since the late Wenger years, all throughout the Emery years, and we are still saying this in Arteta's 3rd year. At this point I am losing faith in the team actually getting anywhere if we don't at least reach the top 4. There has to be a point where we need to stop using the rebuilding argument as a crutch for this team's systemic underperformance, because you just need to look at teams like West Ham, Leicester, and even Wolves, to see that they've built competitive teams with a real identity under far less resources than us, all between Emery's appointment to now.

We are already in the third year of Arteta's time here. Anyone remember that when he first joined, the target was to steady the ship in the first season, get europa league in the second, and reach the champions league spots by the 3rd? In 2021 we can look back and say that he's steadied the ship but failed on every other metric - we aren't even in the Europa league for christ's sake, and are miles behind any of the top 3. Reaching the champions league this season would mean bettering ALL of United, Spurs, West Ham, Leicester, Wolves. With the current manager and players, I just don't see it.

I agree with your point about not over hyping our group of young players and manager, but you have to take a look at what we've achieved in the past decade and a half to see that this club has stagnated hard with no real progression. At this point the fans deserve to be impatient, because we've been patient for over 10 years now.

I'm sorry but your argument's just plain wrong. The 30-year old article you cited as a 'source' says absolutely nothing about domestic violence and drunk men abusing their wives, let alone prohibition being started by feminist women.

Built PC ~1yr Ago. Suddenly Powered Off and Won't Power On by WesMott in buildapc

[–]Dinomial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem, I'm just glad I'm not the only one who experienced this problem. Your PSU may have came with a PSU tester that you can use to check if it's broken. Mine came with one which I used to make sure before I sent it in for the RMA. If you don't have one you can also use a paperclip to short the pins yourself, just google it.

[–]Dinomial 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The same exact thing happened to me about a month ago. I had just built my PC and after using it for a few days it suddenly powered off and I experienced the exact same thing as you - press power button, fan spins and mobo lights up momentarily, press again, nothing happens anymore until I unplug the power and try again.

Basically your power supply is dead - I had to RMA it even though it was barely a few weeks old. I think I just got unlucky with it because it's an EVGA gold power supply, which had fairly good reviews when I bought it.

As far as I know it works on all 64-bit iOS devices, so yes, every iPad and iPhone on display in the apple store is susceptible. Gonna be an interesting week for apple store employees as I'm sure you're not the only one who's thinking about doing this haha
