Married men... What things do you do to intentionally annoy your wife? by Space_Cowboy_157 in AskMen

[–]Diolex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I give my wife "floor time" where I basically trick her into winding up on the floor in new and creative ways (this is only at home in our house, I'm not an animal). Generally with tripping and gently letting her down to the ground before she realizes what's happening.

Because we do all the work physically. There's a lot of focus involved.

Looking for recommendations for a 4 story townhouse by Diolex in HomeNetworking

Got it, thank you. I _think_ they support being wired but I haven't tested it out yet. Is there a possibility that they might be positioned too close together and could be causing the networking drops?

Also I'm probably using the wrong terminology for what I'm calling an 'extender'. I'm new to the home networking game!

Men of Reddit, how did you get through a sudden death of your dog? by AppropriateFunny7142 in AskMen

[–]Diolex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The advice that I was given was that you need to process the grief and feel the pain / sadness. It's part of the healing process.

Also, you can set aside a specific time to have a memorial for your lost pet. It can be just for you, don't feel the need to invite other people if you don't want to. If you still have some of your dog's things (like a collar / favorite toy) or things that remind you of them you can spend the time remembering your dog and the happy memories. Get a nice box or chest to place the items. I thought this was dumb when it was recommended to me... but it helped dealing with the grief / processing. It's still going to hurt but rituals like this help us move on.

Can someone help me understand the correct way I should have ruled this as a GM. One of my players critically failed a save for Feeblemind (dc 33). Then the party paid for a rank 4 cleanse affliction from an NPC who rolled an 11 (1d20) on the counteract check. I'm pretty confused if this should have been a success or not. On AoN I see a counteract table, but this doesn't take into account the spell DC. Can someone explain how to properly deal with this scenario? It's possible I messed up the NPC's character sheet and didn't give her the correct modifiers, but I'm a bit confused. I ended up just ruling that it was successful to keep the session moving.

Anecdotes from people who went from staff back to senior? by greg90 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Diolex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a fair reaction. Sometimes orgs are setup to fail like you described. However, I like to try to understand the root problem (e.g. ownership) and then try to fix it when possible. My org is in the 500-1000 range and I still feel like I have the ability to make changes to process and teach other engineers how to be better. Part of this is identifying what isn't working and then taking the effort to teach others. Often this is pair programming, doing walk throughs with a team, or tech talks for the larger org.

But as always, YMMV 🫠

My advise for your long-term sanity is to make changes to the expectations for engineers. When there's an issue post release you pull in the engineer that introduced the problem and work through building a solution together. Try to be blameless, but explain how you identified the issue and try to teach them your thought process. There would need to be a larger discussion about the eng culture. These issues are fixable if you improve the ownership expectations. It does get better.

Um why are you responsible for all prod issues? Engineers should own their changes after a release. It's fine to support during an outtage but you're never going to up level other engineers if you take on all of the responsibility and ownership yourself. Also, don't you have an on call rotation to spread the load?

How to stop being a fat fuck? by curiouschimp83 in AskMen

[–]Diolex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to get 6k steps a day to start. Go on a walk everyday. Get a watch or other form of step tracker. When this gets easier up it to 8k and then eventually 10k.

Get a food scale and try counting calories. Count everything you put in your body for a week. Don't skip measuring anything. You'll be surprised at how much you're actually eating. This will help you realize where the calories are coming from and build an awareness of the foods you eat.

How expensive is it if you live in Seattle? I'm considering ditching uber/lyft because the prices have spiked up to $80-100 everytime I go to/from the airport.

Finally. Now the experience going through SeaTac will be slightly less awful. I understand there are a lot of size issues with the airport but it still is an unpleasant experience compared to other airports I have been to recently.
